Eye inflammation, especially uveitis, is a prominent feature of spondyloarthropathies. Uveitis associated with ankylosing spondylitis and Reiter's syndrome usually is a unilateral acute anterior uveitis with a high tendency to recur sometimes in the contralateral eye. Uveitis associated with undifferentiated spondyloarthropathy, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis may be less characteristic in its presentation, with a higher tendency to posterior pole involvement, bilaterality, and chronicity. Although acute anterior uveitis is grouped into the spectrum of human leukocyte antigen B27-rel

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B Streptococcus, GBS) is an uncommon cause of septic arthritis in the adult population. In recent years, there has been an increase in the incidence of GBS septic arthritis. This study aims to compare the clinical presentation, investigations, microbiology and outcome of management in patients with GBS and non-GBS septic arthritis.
METHODS: Retrospective review of hospital surgical records was done to identify all patients treated surgically at our institution from January 2011 to January 2016 for primary septic arthritis. Patients were categorise

Among 342 patients with infection due to Campylobacter fetus ss. jejuni, 8 cases (2.3%) of arthritis were found. Three patients had monoarthritis and 5 oligoor polyarthritis. The arthritis began 4 days - 4 weeks after the onset of diarrhoea; this interval and the synovial fluid findings suggest that the arthritis was reactive. The histocompatibility antigen HLA-B 27 was identified in 5 of the 7 patients tested.

The combination of arthritis, urethritis, conjunctivitis, often associated with a psoriasiform rash has been termed Reiter's syndrome, particularly if the patient is HLA-B27 positive. In this report, the history of "Reiter's syndrome" is investigated by reviewing descriptions of the syndrome and the life and times of Hans Reiter from source materials and recent publications that shed new light on medicine and clinical research in the Nazi regime. The description of the syndrome clearly antedates Reiter's work by several hundred years. Numerous other investigators accurately described a reactiv

BACKGROUND: Septic arthritis of the hip is a serious infection in children. However, blood and joint fluid cultures are often negative, which makes the diagnosis and treatment challenging. We analyzed the clinical features of children with septic arthritis of the hip with negative bacterial cultures and identified the risk factors for poor outcomes.
METHODS: The clinical data of children with septic arthritis of the hip with negative bacterial cultures who were treated at our hospital from January 2010 to December 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The clinical characteristics and outcomes o

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid factors (RFs) are a hallmark of rheumatoid arthritis but also arise in infections, including COVID-19. Moreover, infections, again including COVID-19, are associated with rheumatoid arthritis development, positioning RFs as a potential link between infection and rheumatoid arthritis. RFs traditionally have been thought to be relatively uniform in their reactivity across conditions apart from some increased reactivity in rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, however, IgG RFs that bind citrulline- and homocitrulline-containing IgG epitopes were identified in rheumatoid arthritis,

Peripheral spondyloarthritis (SpA) includes psoriatic arthritis (PsA), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)-associated arthritis, reactive arthritis and undifferentiated peripheral SpA. These South African guidelines offer information on diagnosis, assessment and therapy of peripheral SpA. Emphasis is placed on a multidisciplinary team, and a treat-to-target strategy with escalation of therapy if the target of minimal or very low disease activity is achieved. Screening for and treatment of comorbidities are paramount.

Treatment-resistant Lyme arthritis is associated with immune reactivity to outer surface protein A (OspA) of Borrelia burgdorferi, the agent of Lyme disease, and the major histocompatibility complex class II allele DRB1*0401. The immunodominant epitope of OspA for T helper cells was identified. A homology search revealed a peptide from human leukocyte function-associated antigen-1 (hLFA-1) as a candidate autoantigen. Individuals with treatment-resistant Lyme arthritis, but not other forms of arthritis, generated responses to OspA, hLFA-1, and their highly related peptide epitopes. Identificati

Rheumatoid arthritis is significantly associated with the HLA determinant HLA-DRw4 and cell-mediated reactivity to collagen. To determine if genes linked to those coding for HLA-DRw4 constituted immune response genes for collagen reactivity, peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 20 individuals with rheumatoid arthritis, 13 individuals with other arthropathies, and 41 normal individuals were compared for their ability to synthesize the lymphokine leukocyte inhibition factor in response to denatured bovine collagen. All individuals were responsive to the control antigen Candida albicans. While

Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis are known manifestations of melioidosis. Whether reactive arthritis can occur as a sequele to B. pseudomallei infection, is yet to be seen. As more and more cases of melioidosis will be reported in future, this aspect has to be kept in mind.

Lyme arthritis and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) share a number of clinical features. Our study was performed in order to determine the prevalence of antibody to Borrelia burgdorferi in 50 children with JRA who reside in a nonendemic area. Three patients were weakly reactive and one patient was reactive when tested using an enzyme immunoassay to detect serum antibody to B. burgdorferi. No patient, however, had definitive serologic evidence of B. burgdorferi infection by Western blot analysis. We conclude that the prevalence of antibody to B. burgdorferi is very low in children with JRA w

The distal intestine contains bacterial cell wall polymers capable of inducing acute and chronic polyarthritis if systemically distributed. Parenteral injection of peptidoglycan-polysaccharide (PG-PS) polymers from certain bacterial species produces spontaneously relapsing erosive synovitis in susceptible rat strains, and normally subarthropathic amounts of PG-PS and lipopolysaccharide (endotoxin) can reactivate arthritis initially induced by PG-PS. These experimental results illustrate the inflammatory potential of luminal bacterial products and the importance of genetically determined host s

: Spondyloarthropathy (SpA) as observed in patients with idiopathic inflammatory bowel diseases is categorized according to the recently developed criteria of the European Spondylarthropathy Group, and belongs to a large complex of rheumatic disorders, encompassing ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's disease, psoriatic arthritis, and reactive arthritis. It has been recognized for many years that patients with ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease frequently have arthritic complications. The gastroenterologist should therefore carefully evaluate any symptom of peripheral or axial arthritis, in an

Joint involvement in COVID-19 may occur at different stages of the disease and maybe represented by non-specific arthralgia or by acute arthritis. We report two cases of COVID-19 infection that were complicated by postviral reactive arthritis. Case 1: A 47-year-old male was presented 20 days after a COVID-19 infection with acute right knee arthritis. On biologic data, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were normal, and immunologic data were negative. A joint puncture was performed showing a turbid fluid. Testing for microcrystals was negative, as well as the synovial fluid c
