Endomorphin-1 and -2, endogenous ligands for the mu-opioid receptor, inhibit striated and smooth muscle contraction in the rat oesophagus.

Recently, morphological evidence for an interaction of autonomic nerve fibres and extrinsic motor innervation of the rat oesophagus has emerged. The aim of the present study was to investigate the possible influence of endogenous and exogenous opioids on rat oesophageal smooth and striated muscle function in vitro. The entire oesophagus (excluding the lower oesophageal sphincter) with both Nervi (Nn) vagi, including the Nn recurrentes, was dissected and placed in an organ bath (100 mL, 37 degrees) with oxygenated Krebs-Ringer buffer. Contractile activity was measured in a longitudinal directio

Influence of neural blockages and proglumide on rat pancreatic enzyme secretion in response to intraluminal fatty acid.

Effects of neural blockages on pancreatic enzyme secretion in response to infusing fatty acid into the lumen were investigated using anesthetized rats, equipped with bile-pancreatic and duodenal cannulae, to evaluate the relative contribution of the neural and the hormonal mediations in the pancreatic response. Oleate (0.2 ml) was injected as a bolus into the rat duodenum, and the trypsin output in bile-pancreatic juice was monitored to determine the pancreatic enzyme secretion response with continuous return of bile-pancreatic juice to the intestine. When anticholinergic agents such as atropi

Comparison of Prognostic Accuracy of 3 Delirium Prediction Models.

OBJECTIVE: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT/A) reversibly blocks neurotransmission at voluntary and autonomic cholinergic nerve terminals, inducing paralysis. The aim of this study was to block panenteric peristalsis in rats through BoNT/A administration into the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and to understand whether the toxin's action is selectively restricted to the perfused territory. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were infused through a 0.25-mm surgically inserted SMA catheter with different doses of BoNT/A (10 U, 20 U, 40 U BOTOX®, Allergan Inc.) or with saline for 24 h. Animals were free t

Cervical ganglion block attenuates the progression of pulmonary hypertension via nitric oxide and arginase pathways.

It has been recognized that the sympathetic nervous system is activated in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), and abnormal sympathetic hyperactivity leads to worsening of PAH via endothelial dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to examine whether sympathetic ganglion block (SGB) can treat PAH by increasing the availability of nitric oxide (NO). PAH was induced in rats by 50 mg/kg of subcutaneous monocrotaline. After 2 weeks, daily injections of ropivacaine into the left superior cervical ganglion were repeated for 14 days (monocrotaline-SGB group). Monocrotaline group received sham S

Ramicotomy in association with endoscopic sympathetic blockade in the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: The use of endoscopic sympathetic blockade (ESB) to treat axillary hyperhidrosis (AH) has become more widespread recently. ESB of the T3 and T4 ganglia is more effective, although it results in a higher incidence of compensatory sweating (CS) than ESB of T4 alone. To reduce CS and improve the level of satisfaction and therapeutic success of ESB, we performed T3 ramicotomy in association with T4 ESB. METHODS: Ninety patients with axillary hyperhidrosis were randomized into 3 groups of 30 patients-group A (T3 and T4 ESB), group B (T4 ESB), and group C (T4 ESB in association with T3

[Ambulatory CT-assisted thoracic sympathetic block as an additional approach to treatment of complex regional pain syndromes after sport injuries].

AIM: Also after bagatelle trauma, some patients can develop a complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS). The limb concerned usually shows a marked temperature difference to the contralateral side. Apart from a doughy swelling, the patient is impaired in particular by burning pain and a restricted range of motion. The objective of the present study was to examine the influence of early thoracic sympathetic nerve blockade on the basis of clinical and quantified blood flow parameters. METHODS: In 7 young patients (average age 17.7 [15 - 21] years) with a clinically developing type 1 CRPS after sport

Effects of gender and level of surgical sympathetic block on vasoconstrictor function.

Interruption of sympathetic outflow by surgical sympathetic block has been used to treat hyperhidrosis for decades. In this study the effect of gender and the level of sympathetic block (T2 vs. T3) on the rewarming kinetics following ice water immersion were assessed in a prospective study on 60 hyperhidrosis patients before, 2 days, and 3 months postoperatively. Rewarming kinetics following endoscopic sympathetic block (ESB) was massively enhanced 2 days post-operatively, but had returned to pre-operative conditions at the 3 month follow-up for ESB at level T3. ESB at level T2 provoked signif

Recurrent and migratory reflex sympathetic dystrophy in children.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a syndrome characterized by superficial pain and tenderness associated with swelling, vasomotor instability, and dystrophic changes of the skin. In children, it is rarely reported and is felt to have a more benign and self-limited course. This case illustrates that, in children, reflex sympathetic dystrophy can occur without any previous history of trauma, and may be recurrent and migratory. A review of the literature is included. An 11-year-old girl, with no history of trauma, presented in 1992 with spontaneous onset of right leg pain. She was diagnosed with re

Hemodynamic effects of vasopressin compared with angiotensin II in conscious rats.

The mechanisms whereby arginine vasopressin influences hemodynamic and autonomic function were investigated in conscious rats. In normal rats, 60-min intravenous infusions produced dose-related increases of arterial pressure and total peripheral resistance with marked decreases of both heart rate and cardiac output. Cholinergic blockade with methscopolamine attenuated the bradycardia at higher doses of vasopressin, whereby the fall of cardiac output was not affected. beta-Adrenergic blockade with atenolol attenuated the fall of heart rate seen with lower doses of vasopressin but did not preven
