Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common compression neuropathy. The median nerve contains sensory, motor, and sympathetic fibers. Involvement of the different fibers of the median nerve in CTS may vary; hence, one of the sensory, motor, or autonomic dysfunctions may be dominant. Autonomic fibers of the median nerve consist of postganglionic sympathetic vasomotor and sudomotor fibers. An incomplete interruption of the axoplasmic flow may provoke a reflex that increases the sympathetic activity, leading to sweating, Raynaud phenomenon, and paleness of fingers. A complete sympathetic axop

CONTEXT: Individuals with high-level spinal cord injury (SCI) face serious cardiovascular (CV) autonomic complications, contributing to increased mortality and morbidity. The assessment of CV autonomic function in SCI is challenging and varies widely across studies, with no clear or definitive interventions to restore hemodynamic stability or prevent complications.
OBJECTIVES: This review outlines available clinical data on measuring and managing CV autonomic dysfunction after SCI and identifies gaps in these domains.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted, using a search strategy targeting

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction is increasingly recognized as a common sequela of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Heart rate variability (HRV) is a specific measure of autonomic nervous system functioning that can be used to measure beat-to-beat changes in heart rate following TBI. The objective of this systematic review was to determine the state of the literature on HRV dysfunction following TBI, assess the level of support for HRV dysfunction following TBI, and determine if HRV dysfunction predicts mortality and the severity and subsequent recovery of TBI symptoms. We followed the Prefer…

PURPOSE: Studies have found that sleep disorders and autonomic dysfunction are associated with several metabolic diseases. Moreover, these factors also been reported to be related with the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease independent of other known factors, and details related to their pathogenesis have recently received increased attention. Additionally, the rates of incidence of heart and renal failure are showing an increasing trend.
METHODS: A literature search was conducted to explore the interrelationship between sleep disorders, autonomic dysfunction, and cardi

Autonomic modulation is critical during various physiological activities, including orthostatic stimuli and primarily evaluated by heart rate variability (HRV). Orthostatic stress affects people differently suggesting the possibility of identification of predisposed groups to autonomic dysfunction-related disorders in a healthy state. One way to understand this kind of variability is by using Ayurvedic approach that classifies healthy individuals into Prakriti types based on clinical phenotypes. To this end, we explored the differential response to orthostatic stress in different Prakriti type

Presyncope and syncope are common medical findings, with a > 40% estimated lifetime prevalence. These conditions are often elicited by postural stress and can be recurrent and accompanied by debilitating symptoms of cerebral hypoperfusion. Therefore, it is critical for physicians to become familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of common underlying causes of presyncope and syncope. In some patients, altered postural hemodynamic responses result from a failure of compensatory autonomic nervous system reflex mechanisms. The most common presentations of presyncope and syncope secondary to this…

Heart disease is the number one cause of mortality in the developed world and it is well recognised that neural mechanisms are important in pathology. As well as peripheral autonomic nerves, there is a rich intrinsic innervation of the heart that includes cardiac ganglia, collectively termed ganglionic plexuses (GP). Understanding the role that the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS) play in controlling cardiac function and how it interacts with information between central command centers and its integration with sensory information from the myocardium could prove crucial for prophylactic
