Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is an oncogenic retrovirus in the human T cell leukemia virus family. BLV infects B lymphocytes and induces a nonmalignant persistent lymphocytosis (PL) and leukemia/lymphoma in cattle. There is evidence that CD4 T lymphocytes are activated during BLV infection and promote the development of PL. How CD4 T lymphocytes are activated by BLV infection is not known. Trypanosomiasis is a serious constraint to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. Some breeds of cattle are genetically more resistant to the pathogenic effects of trypanosome infection. Cytogenetic analyses by G-banding and/or Q-banding techniques of leukemic B cells were performed in 102 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), including six with prolymphocytic leukemia (PLL), one with hairy cell leukemia (HCL), and one with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (WM) from 1979 through 1983. Human LFA-1 is a widely expressed leukocyte antigen present on cells of myeloid and lymphoid lineage. Monoclonal antibodies to LFA-1 have been shown to inhibit in vitro T cell immune functions. Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a heterogeneous group of disorders, clinically, immunologically, and pathologically. ALL of a B cell phenotype (B-ALL) is the least common. The levels of T- and B-lymphocytes were assayed and their functional activity studied in 23 patients with primary cancer and 21 cases of alveococcosis of liver. The lowered levels of T-lymphocytes in both groups and the decreased C3-fraction of B-lymphocytes in primary cancer of the liver were observed.
