Between 0.5 and 4 of every 1000 children are born with hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is an over-accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the ventricles of the brain, which can affect cognitive function, vision, appetite, and cranial nerve function. Left untreated, hydrocephalus can result in death. The current treatment for hydrocephalus uses ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts with valves to redirect CSF from the ventricles into the peritoneum. Shunt technology is limited by a number of complications, which include infection after implantation, shunt obstruction due to clot formation or cathe

Monolayer graphene has great potential for a range of technological and biomedical applications. To achieve this potential, however, selective functionalization of the surface using mild chemical methods that yield spatially and chemically well-defined functional groups is needed. Here, we describe a method to densely and uniformly modify the surface of graphene using a diazonium salt containing a tetrazine moiety, a functional group amenable to bioorthogonal chemistry. The resulting functionalized graphene efficiently undergoes inverse electron demand Diels-Alder reactions with trans-cyclooct

The meta-theoretical resource of critical realism (CR) is deployed in order to examine transgender and healthcare. CR treads a middle way between positivism and postmodernism, within post-Popperian discussions of the philosophy of natural and social science. It focuses on the conditions of possibility for the emergence of a phenomenon under investigation. In this case, the focus is on the emergence of debates about transgenderism in healthcare. These have been technological (about the prospect of biomedical solutions to personal problems) and ideological, with the enlarged salience of identity
