Antibodies against the human neutrophil antigens (HNA) are able to stimulate transfusion reactions, autoimmune and neonatal neutropenia. The aim of this study was to determine the HNA allele frequencies in the largest ethnic minority group in Germany in comparison with the German population for predicting the risk of alloimmunization and associated transfusion reactions, as well as the risk of developing neonatal neutropenia for the newborn of racial mixed couples. However, there exists no data about HNA genotype distribution in Turkish population. DNA was isolated from blood samples of 119 Ge

BACKGROUND: The trauma triad of death, consisting of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy, has long been recognized as a major cause of mortality in trauma patients. Recently, hypocalcemia has emerged as a fourth component that plays a critical role in the prognosis of these patients. The objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the association between hypocalcemia and mortality among trauma patients.
METHODS: The authors systematically reviewed studies published in English from OVID, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases between January 1, 2000 and October 31, 2024. Randomized controlled t

BACKGROUND: Surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot and major aortopulmonary collaterals (TOF/MAPCAs) involves unifocalization of MAPCAs and reconstruction of the pulmonary arterial circulation. Surgical and cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) times are long and suture lines are extensive. Maintaining patency of the newly anastomosed vessels while achieving hemostasis is important, and assessment of transfusion practices is critical to successful outcomes.
METHODS: Clinical, surgical, and transfusion data in patients with TOF/MAPCAs repaired at our institution (2013-2018) were reviewed. Types and vol

The primary indication for immunohematological testing in the prenatal patient is to detect and identify maternal red cell antibodies. If there are antibodies that are expected to hemolyze the fetus' red cells, their strength of reactivity must be tested, and the fetus' antigen status determined. After delivery, testing is performed to assess the extent of fetomaternal hemorrhage, as a large hemorrhage may require other therapeutic interventions. Another major role for immunohematological testing is to select blood components appropriately when intrauterine transfusion is required for fetal an

BACKGROUND: Colloidal plasma-expander fluids are commonly used as an alternative to blood components in the resuscitation of patients suffering from hemorrhagic shock and trauma. Of these, hydroxyethyl starch is also used as a cryopreservative, and these dual properties have been utilized in the development of a blood storage system that allows the direct transfusion of red cells. The prolonged intravascular persistence of hydroxyethyl starch suggests that phagocytic clearance may be impaired and that the presence of hydroxyethyl starch could exacerbate transfusion-induced immunomodulation.

A considerable amount of information has accumulated over the past decade indicating that the transfusion of allogeneic blood products may be associated with adverse effects to the recipient. These include the development of transfusion reactions, TA-GVHD, HLA-alloimmunization, and immunomodulatory effects. The latter might be beneficial for recipients of kidney allografts, in reducing the relapse rate in patients with Crohn's disease, and in ameliorating the rate of recurrence of spontaneous abortion in affected patients; however, the immunosuppressive effects associated with perioperative AB

BACKGROUND: Blood donations are routinely screened for HIV to prevent an infectious unit from being released to the blood supply. Despite improvements to blood screening assays, donations from infected donors remain undetectable during the window period (WP), when the virus has not yet replicated above the lower limit of detection (LOD) of a screening assay. To aid in the quantitative risk assessments of WP donations, a dose-response model describing the probability of transfusion-transmission of HIV over a range of viral RNA copies was developed.
METHODS: An exponential model was chosen base

BACKGROUND: Many reports document the transmission of human parvovirus B19 (B19) infection by clotting factor concentrates manufactured from large plasma pools. Transmission via other blood components originating from a single donor or a small number of donors, however, seems to occur only rarely. The study reported here identifies a B19 infection that was transmitted via a platelet donation.
CASE REPORT: A multiply transfused allogeneic bone marrow transplant patient developed chronic anemia due to persistent B19 infection. The anemia responded to therapy with intravenous immunoglobulin. It

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion of contaminated components is a potential source of sepsis by a wide range of known and unknown pathogens. Collection mechanism and storage conditions of platelets make them vulnerable for bacterial contamination. Several interventions aim to reduce the transfusion of contaminated platelet units; however, data suggest that contaminated platelet transfusion remains very common.
AIM: A pathogen inactivation system, "INTERCEPT", to inactivate bacteria in deliberately contaminated platelet units was implemented and evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five single-donor

The transfusion of blood components is a critical therapeutic intervention for certain clinical conditions for which alternative treatments are often unavailable. Despite the benefits, transfusions can pose health risks to the recipients, including potential transmission of infectious agents. Post-donation, blood components undergo testing for major transmissible agents such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), Hepatitis B and C Viruses (HBV and HCV), Treponema pallidum (syphilis), and Trypanosoma cruzi (Chagas disease). This retrospective study assessed the prevalence of donor unsuitability

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhage is the principal cause of death in the first few hours following severe injury. Coagulopathy is a frequent complication of critical bleeding. A network of Italian trauma centers recently developed a protocol to prevent and treat trauma-induced coagulopathy. A pre-post cohort multicenter study was conducted to assess the impact of the early coagulation support (ECS) protocol on blood products consumption, mortality and treatment costs.
METHODS: We prospectively collected data from all severely injured patients (Injury Severity Score (ISS) >15) admitted to two trauma ce

The management of a patient treated with an antithrombotic agent who requires an invasive procedure remains challenging. There are antidotes neither for the antiplatelet agents nor the new anticoagulants. A good knowledge of basic pharmacology of these drugs and the help of a hematologist within a multidisciplinary approach are essential. The potential interest of laboratory tests and the use of reversal agents, and the transfusion of plasma and platelets will be discussed.

BACKGROUND: The safety of donated blood during transfusion is important; however, blood donation can entail risks owing to contamination of the blood with transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs). Ensuring the safety of blood and blood components is a major global goal to guarantee their availability to patients. Unsafe blood not only affects the patients but also extends the risk to their partners, contributing to the spread of TTIs and posing a burden on society. This review emphasizes the trends and prevalence of TTIs among blood donors in Saudi Arabia over the years.
METHODS: A systemic

Malaria is an infectious vector-borne disease with other important routes of transmission, such as blood transfusion and organ/tissue transplantation, due to asymptomatic reservoirs of Plasmodium presenting with low parasitemia. Reports of transfusion-transmitted malaria have shown that in immunosuppressed recipients, infections can be fatal if they are not diagnosed and timely treated. All Plasmodium species can survive on blood components at temperatures from 2 to 6 °C for some days or even weeks. This report describes two candidates for blood donation harboring Plasmodium, infected in an ar
