Excess energy intake promotes the development of hypoalbuminaemia in rats fed on low-protein diets.

1. A group of rats were given ad lib, a diet with a protein-energy: total energy (P:E) value of 0 . 03. Other animals received the same protein intake (g/kg body-weight per d) as this group, but had their energy consumption reduced to either 90, 80, 70, 60 or 50% of the ad lib. value. 2. The restricted growth rate of rats fed on the P:E--0 . 03 diet ad lib. has been shown to be due entirely to their insufficient protein consumption. In contrast, energy intake was far in excess of that required for maintenance and the limited amount of growth. 3. Carcass analysis demonstrated that some of the e

Obesity risk for female victims of childhood sexual abuse: a prospective study.

OBJECTIVE: Efforts are under way to articulate environmental, psychosocial, and biological conditions that may predispose the development and maintenance of obesity. There is increasing evidence that adverse childhood experiences such as childhood abuse may be implicated in the development of obesity. Given the dearth of prospective evidence for this link, the objective of this study was to track body mass across development (from childhood, through adolescence, and into young adulthood [ie, ages 6-27]) in a prospective, longitudinal study of abused and nonabused female subjects. METHODS: Hei

Late gestational nutrient restriction decreases placental size and calf birth weight without altering uterine blood flow in primiparous beef females.

To investigate impacts of late gestational nutrient restriction in first-parity beef females on prenatal nutrient availability to calves, fall-calving heifers [body weight (BW): 472 ± 33 (SD) kg; body condition score (BCS): 5.4 ± 0.5] were individually-fed 100% (control; CON; n = 13) or 70% (nutrient restricted; NR; n = 13) of metabolizable energy and metabolizable protein requirements for maintenance, pregnancy, and growth from day 160 of gestation to calving. Maternal measures were determined every 21 d (BW and metabolites) or 42 d (BCS, backfat, and longissimus muscle area) during gestation

Novel prediction equations for appendicular skeletal muscle mass in hemodialysis patients: referenced against bioelectrical impedance analysis.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) is essential in clinical practice and research involving patients undergoing hemodialysis (HD). However, ASM prediction equations developed in the general population may be inappropriate for HD patients because of dialysis-related alterations in body composition and hydration status. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of existing anthropometric ASM prediction equations in HD patients and to develop dialysis-specific equations tailored to this population. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 111 patients receivi

Effects of stocking rate on grazing behavior, nitrogen and energy metabolism, and greenhouse gas emissions of Simmental cattle in saline meadow.

A rational stocking rate balances grassland ecosystems and improves livestock productivity. This study examined how stocking rates affect Simmental cattle in saline meadow through analyses of grazing behavior, nitrogen (N) and energy metabolism, and greenhouse gas emissions, to inform targeted livestock management. A total of 24 male Simmental cattle (3-month-old, 104.72 ± 1.78 kg) were selected and assigned to stocking rates of 0.66, 1.33, and 2.66 cattle/ha (8 cattle/treatment). The experiment adopted a rotational grazing system, with three paddocks as replicates for each stocking rate, and

Comparison of 3 blind brachial plexus block techniques during maintenance of anesthesia and postoperative pain scores in dogs undergoing surgical procedures of the thoracic limb.

The degree of analgesia provided by blind techniques for brachial plexus blocks (BPBs) has not been compared in clinical cases undergoing surgery of the thoracic limb. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anesthetic conditions and postoperative analgesia resulting from 3 different BPB local anesthetic techniques in canine patients undergoing such surgery. Twenty-four client-owned dogs received a standardized premedication/induction protocol (hydromorphone and acepromazine/propofol), maintained with isoflurane in oxygen using mechanical ventilation, in a prospective, randomized, blin

Hemodynamic effects and clinical determinants of defibrillation threshold for transvenous atrial defibrillation using biatrial biphasic shocks in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation.

We assessed the relationship between the hemodynamic changes and shock intensity in transvenous atrial defibrillation for chronic AF. The correlation between the clinical profile and atrial DFT and the factors predicting maintenance of SR after successful defibrillation were also investigated. Atrial defibrillation using entirely transvenous leads has been investigated as an alternative means of managing patients with AF. However, the hemodynamic consequence of this technique and the clinical factors predicting defibrillation efficacy have not been evaluated. Thirty-seven patients with chronic

The exercise and environmental physiology of extravehicular activity.

Extravehicular activity (EVA), i.e., exercise performed under unique environmental conditions, is indispensable for supporting daily living in weightlessness and for further space exploration. From 1965-1996 an average of 20 h x yr(-1) were spent performing EVA. International Space Station (ISS) assembly will require 135 h x yr(-1) of EVA, and 138 h x yr(-1) is planned for post-construction maintenance. The extravehicular mobility unit (EMU), used to protect astronauts during EVA, has a decreased pressure of 4.3 psi that could increase astronauts' risk of decompression sickness (DCS). Exercise

Nutritional rehabilitation in patients with advanced head and neck cancer receiving radiation therapy.

Previous studies of nutritional support in cancer patients have applied parenteral techniques for relatively short periods. The purpose of this prospective, randomized trial was to evaluate the efficacy of long-term enteral alimentation in patients at high risk for malnutrition during oncologic treatment. Forty patients with inoperable squamous carcinoma of the nasopharynx and oropharynx were randomized to either optimal oral nutrition or to intensive nasogastric tube feedings during radiation therapy for an average of 8 weeks. Dietetic counselling and oral supplements were provided to both gr

The Effects of Continuous vs. Intermittent Caloric Restriction on Fat Loss: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background/Objectives: Obesity remains difficult to treat effectively, not because weight loss cannot be achieved, but because it is difficult to sustain in the face of physiological adaptations to energy restriction, including reductions in resting metabolic rate and loss of fat-free mass. Dietary strategies that preserve favorable body composition while supporting long-term adherence are therefore needed. The purpose of this study was to compare continuous caloric restriction (CCR) with an intermittent approach incorporating structured diet refeeds and planned diet breaks (DRF) on body compo

Hepatic FoxO3 Supports Metabolic Resilience, Attenuates Age-Associated Obesity and Metabolic Dysfunction, and Mitigates Diet-Induced Steatohepatitis.

Forkhead box O3 (FoxO3) is implicated in aging and metabolic regulation; however, its roles in the local and systemic control of aging remain incompletely understood. In this study, we characterized the effects of hepatocyte-specific Foxo3 deletion on hepatic metabolic and whole-body energy homeostasis during aging, and the susceptibility of mice to metabolic disease. Male hepatocyte-specific Foxo3 knockout (h-Foxo3-/-) mice developed moderate obesity and higher plasma insulin levels by middle age, despite no difference in food intake compared with wild-type mice. Indirect calorimetry revealed

Effects of Treatment with a DNA Methyltransferase Inhibitor 5-aza-dC on Sex Differentiation in Medaka (Oryzias latipes).

DNA methylation is a common epigenetic modification of DNA levels in the genome of eukaryotic cells, and an aberrant elevation of DNA methylation in gene promoter regions can inhibit gene expression. DNA methyltransferases (DNMTs) are involved in genomic DNA methylation, divided into maintenance DNA methyltransferases and de novo methylases, which are expressed to different degrees in the testis and ovaries. 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) is a cytidine analog with a strong methylation inhibition. In this experiment, medaka fish fries were treated with 5-aza-dC at 0 μg/L, 50 μg/L, and 100 μg

Changes in lipid metabolism in the visceral rather than the subcutaneous adipose tissue depot attenuate metabolic disturbances in obesity-resistant mice fed a high-fat diet.

Obesity is characterized by an enlargement of white adipose tissue caused by caloric excess. The depot-specific adaptation of white adipose tissue in individuals resistant to obesity despite a high-calorie diet is crucial for understanding the pathogenesis of obesity and related metabolic disorders. Our aim was to characterize the metabolic and morphological state of obesity resistance and to investigate depot-specific changes in signaling pathways in epididymal visceral (eVAT) and inguinal subcutaneous (iSAT) white adipose tissue of C57BL/6J male mice on a high-fat diet (60 kcal% fats).
