Factor solution of the BPRS-expanded version in schizophrenic outpatients living in five European countries.

RATIONALE: The expanded version of the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS-E) has improved the instrument's coverage and interrater reliability, but there is little knowledge on its subsyndromes. OBJECTIVES: To assess: (1) whether there are common underlying BPRS-E subscales in patients living in different countries and (2) if this is the case, whether these subscales behave the same in all populations and, if not, what are the differences over these populations. METHODS: Data are part of the EPSILON study, a collaborative project carried out in Denmark, England, Holland, Italy and Spain. A…

Nicotine effects on brain function and functional connectivity in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine in tobacco smoke can improve functioning in multiple cognitive domains. High rates of smoking among schizophrenic patients may reflect an effort to remediate cognitive dysfunction. Our primary aim was to determine whether nicotine improves cognitive function by facilitating activation of brain regions mediating task performance or by facilitating functional connectivity. METHODS: Thirteen smokers with schizophrenia and 13 smokers with no mental illness were withdrawn from tobacco and underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning twice, once after placeme

Psychological disorders and coping strategies in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Their impact on health-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has a major impact on psychological well-being. This condition is associated with a high level of anxiety and mood disorders, but stress prevalence and how an individual copes with IBD have not been sufficiently explored. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of the disease on psychological disorders and to identify coping strategies used by patients with IBD, as well as to analyze the relationship between these variables and sociodemographic and clinical variables. METHODS: a cross-sectional prospective study was perf

Psychophysiological stress response after a 6-week Mindful Self-Compassion training in psychiatric rehabilitation inpatients: a randomized post-test only study.

OBJECTIVES: Mindfulness-based interventions (including self-compassion interventions) are effective in improving stress management at psychological and physical levels. Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) is a newly developed program particularly aimed at increasing self-compassion. The main objective of this study was to determine whether the psychophysiological stress response during a social-evaluative speaking task differs in inpatients participating in the MSC or the Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) program at the end of their 6-week psychiatric rehabilitation stay (i.e., post-test only desi

Early response or nonresponse at week 2 and week 3 predict ultimate response or nonresponse in adolescents with schizophrenia treated with olanzapine: results from a 6-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial.

In adults with schizophrenia, early response/non-response (ER/ENR) to antipsychotics at 2 weeks robustly predicts ultimate response/non-response (UR/UNR). However, less data about the predictive value of ER/ENR exist in adolescents with schizophrenia. Post hoc analysis of a 6-week trial in adolescents aged 13-17 with schizophrenia were randomized 2:1 to olanzapine or placebo. ER was defined as ≥20 % reduction in Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale-children (BPRS-C) total score at week 2 (ER2) or 3 (ER3); UR was defined with increasing stringency as total BPRS-C score reduction ≥20, ≥30, ≥40 or ≥50 …

Symptom-based characteristics and treatment efficacy of neuropathic pain related to spinal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Symptom-based therapeutic management is required for neuropathic pain (NeP) to achieve higher treatment efficacy. In spinal disorders, which have a high prevalence of NeP, neurological symptoms are classified into myelopathy, radiculopathy, and cauda equina syndrome. The characteristics of pain and the treatment efficacy for each of these symptoms require clarification. METHODS: A retrospective patient-based outcome study was conducted in 265 outpatients with chronic NeP (≥3 months) related to spinal disorders. The patients were classified into three groups according to their neur

Measuring Depression Severity With Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale Scores From Clinical Notes Using Large Language Models: Validation Study.

BACKGROUND: Real-world psychiatric care is marked by wide heterogeneity in clinical presentations and outcomes, underscoring the need for systematic approaches to outcome measurement. The Clinical Global Impression-Severity (CGI-S) scale is a brief, clinician-rated measure of overall illness severity that is widely used in psychiatric research, but rarely documented in routine care. Large language models (LLMs) may enable automated extraction of CGI-S scores from narrative clinical notes, thereby providing scalable outcome measures for real-world clinical care and research. OBJECTIVE: The stu

Prefrontal transcranial direct current stimulation in alcohol use disorder: a pilot randomized sham-controlled trial with exploratory effects on reward craving and depressive symptoms.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a frequent and often treatment-resistant condition, with high relapse rates and frequent psychiatric comorbidities. In this randomized, double-blind pilot trial, 38 patients with AUD were assigned to receive either active anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex or sham stimulation, in addition to standard care. The protocol consisted of 1 mA for 20 min per session, followed by maintenance stimulation over a 12-week period. The preregistered confirmatory outcomes were changes in craving severity assessed by the

Anxiety Symptoms Questionnaire (ASQ): development and validation.

BACKGROUND: The Anxiety Symptoms Questionnaire (ASQ) is a brief self-report questionnaire which measures frequency and intensity of symptoms and was developed to improve assessment of anxiety symptoms in a clinical setting. We examined the reliability and validity of the ASQ in patients with anxiety disorders and/or depression, non-clinical control subjects and college students. Early Origins of Autism Comorbidity: Neuropsychiatric Traits Correlated in Childhood Are Independent in Infancy.

Previous research has suggested that behavioral comorbidity is the rule rather than the exception in autism. The present study aimed to trace the respective origins of autistic and general psychopathologic traits-and their association-to infancy. Measurements of autistic traits and early liability for general psychopathology were assessed in 314 twins at 18 months, ascertained from the general population using birth records. 222 twins were re-evaluated at 36 months. Standardized ratings of variation in social communication at 18 months were highly heritable and strongly predicted autistic trai
