The Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus), a species of high ecological and conservation value, shows abnormal respiratory behaviors as early signs of health decline. Accurate assessment of its pulmonary respiration is crucial for improving captive breeding and post-breeding parental care-key strategies for its survival and population recovery. However, its nocturnal and cave-dwelling nature makes traditional observation extremely difficult. Manual monitoring suffers from poor visibility at night, while conventional detection methods often miss subtle respiratory movements, limiting be

Skeletal remains of an adult (estimated age at death ≈ 27-30 years) Prehispanic male with fusion in the sacroiliac joints showed a heterotopic ossification consisting of a flat, 10 × 5 cm bone formation covering the posterior aspect of the right sacroiliac joint. The bones were recovered from a burial cave containing remains of 4 individuals, located on the side of a ravine, in Buenavista del Norte (NW corner of Tenerife, Canary Islands), at ≈ 450 m altitude. This individual was probably affected by ankylosing spondylitis (AS) that led to bony fusion of the pelvic bones with the sacrum, but se

Transition-metal-catalyzed enantioselective nitrene transfer to sulfides has emerged as one of the most powerful strategies for rapid construction of enantioenriched sulfimides. However, achieving stereocontrol over highly active earth-abundant transition-metal nitrenoid intermediates remains a formidable challenge compared with precious metals. Herein, we disclose a chiral iron(II)/N,N'-dioxide-catalyzed enantioselective imidation of dialkyl and alkyl aryl sulfides using iminoiodinanes as nitrene precursors. A series of chiral sulfimides were obtained in moderate-to-good yields with high enan

AIMS: Trigeminal neuropathy is more likely to suggest neuronal damage and occur due to secondary pathology than trigeminal neuralgia. Evaluation of underlying etiologies are necessary.
CASE: A 29-year-old female patient presented with left sided continuous burning pain likened to pins and needles at maxillary distribution for about a year. Her examination was normal except left-sided buccal swelling without any skin or mucosal change. Cranial MRI revealed asymmetrical dilation of left Meckel's cave, bilateral cerebral developmental venous anomaly and left sided slow flow venous malformation f

BACKGROUND: Isolated trigeminal schwannomas occur in 0.07% to 0.3% of intracranial tumors and account for 0.8% to 8% of intracranial schwannomas and 1/3 of Meckel cave tumors. The presence of multisegmental schwannoma is rare, resulting in a limited understanding of its optimal management.
OBJECTIVE: To describe potential surgical options to manage this rare entity.
METHODS: A 2-institution retrospective review of all patients with pathologically confirmed trigeminal schwannoma managed with resection from January 2009 through January 2019 was conducted. A manual chart review was performed to

Yersinia entercolitica is a bacterial species within the genus Yersinia, mostly known as a human enteric pathogen, but also recognized as a zoonotic agent widespread in domestic pigs. Findings of this bacterium in wild animals are very limited. The current report presents results of the identification of cultures of Y. entercolitica from dead bats after a massive bat die-off in a cave in western Georgia. The growth of bacterial colonies morphologically suspected as Yersinia was observed from three intestine tissues of 11 bats belonging to the Miniopterus schreibersii species. These three isola

Since its description in 1985, the transapical petrosal transtentorial or Kawase approach has become a viable option of approaching lesions located in and around the apex of the petrous bone, Meckel's cave, and the anterolateral surface of the brain stem while preserving cranial nerve function. At the Brain Tumor Center, Erasmus MC, 25 patients were treated using the Kawase approach between 2004 and 2018 for various indications, including petroclival meningiomas, chondrosarcomas, pontine cavernomas, trigeminal schwannomas, and posterior circulation aneurysms. Hearing preservation was achieved

Ixodes simplex is a tick species of bats, mainly reported from Schreibers' Bent-winged bat, Miniopterus schreibersii, all over its host's range. While being a common parasite of cave-dwelling bat species, the initial description of males is poor (based on a sole damaged specimen), lacking distinctive features. This study describes the male of I. simplex also providing measurements for a number of characters, using a series 10 of specimens. Males of I. simplex show the following characteristics distinct from males of I. ariadnae and I. vespertilionis: idiosoma is shorter (2.6 mm vs. 3.4-4.7 mm)

BACKGROUND: The lateral extended transsphenoidal endoscopic approach (LETEA) is used to remove tumors located lateral to the cavernous segment of the internal carotid artery under direct visual control and provides access to Meckel cave, pterygopalatine fossa, medial part of the middle cranial fossa, and orbit. We describe an extended transsphenoidal approach to the amygdalohippocampectomy through the pterygopalatine fossa.
METHODS: The LETEA to the middle cranial fossa through the pterygopalatine fossa was studied on 3 injected human cadavers at the Burdenko Neurosurgery Institute in Moscow,

Methodological developments and new paleoanthropological data remain jointly central to clarifying the timing and systemic interrelationships between the Middle-Upper Paleolithic (MP-UP) archaeological transition and the broadly contemporaneous anatomically modern human-archaic biological turnover. In the recently discovered cave site of Mughr el-Hamamah, Jordan, in situ flint artifacts comprise a diagnostic early Upper Paleolithic (EUP) assemblage. Unusually well-preserved charcoal from hearths and other anthropogenic features associated with the lithic material were subjected to acid-base-we

Rabies is a worldwide zoonosis resulting from Lyssavirus infection. In Europe, Eptesicus serotinus is the most frequently reported bat species infected with Lyssavirus, and thus considered to be the reservoir of European bat Lyssavirus type 1 (EBLV-1). To date, the role of other bat species in EBLV-1 epidemiology and persistence remains unknown. Here, we built an EBLV-1-transmission model based on local observations of a three-cave and four-bat species (Myotis capaccinii, Myotis myotis, Miniopterus schreibersii, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum) system in the Balearic Islands, for which a 1995-2011 s

OBJECT: Lesions of the cavernous sinus remain a technical challenge. The most common surgical approaches involve some variation of the standard frontotemporal craniotomy. Here, the authors describe a surgical approach to access the cavernous sinus that involves the removal of the lateral orbital wall.
METHODS: To achieve exposure of the cavernous sinus, a lateral canthal incision is performed, and the lateral orbital rim and anterior lateral wall are removed, for later replacement at closure. The posterior lateral orbital wall is removed to the region of the superior and inferior orbital fiss

The link between visual information and postural control was investigated based on a multi-degree-of-freedom model using the framework of the uncontrolled manifold (UCM) hypothesis. The hypothesis was that because visual information specifies the position of the body in space, it would couple preferentially into those combinations of degrees of freedom (DOFs) that move the body in space and not into combinations of DOFs that do not move the body in space. Subjects stood quietly in a virtual reality cave for 4-min trials with or without a 0.2, 2.0 Hz, or combined 0.2 and 2.0 Hz visual field per

During the last two decades, endoscopic endonasal approach has completed the minimally invasive skull base surgery armamentarium. Endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery (EESBS) was initially developed in the field of pituitary adenomas, and gained an increasing place for the treatment of a wide variety of skull base pathologies, extending on the midline from crista galli process to the occipitocervical junction and laterally to the parasellar areas and petroclival apex. Until now, most studies are retrospective and lack sufficient methodological quality to confirm whether the endoscopic endon

Homo floresiensis is an endemic hominin species that occupied Liang Bua, a limestone cave on Flores in eastern Indonesia, during the Late Pleistocene epoch. The skeleton of the type specimen (LB1) of H. floresiensis includes a relatively complete left foot and parts of the right foot. These feet provide insights into the evolution of bipedalism and, together with the rest of the skeleton, have implications for hominin dispersal events into Asia. Here we show that LB1's foot is exceptionally long relative to the femur and tibia, proportions never before documented in hominins but seen in some A

BACKGROUND: Marburg virus disease is an acute haemorrhagic fever caused by Marburg virus. Marburg virus is zoonotic, maintained in nature in Egyptian fruit bats, with occasional spillover infections into humans and nonhuman primates. Although rare, sporadic cases and outbreaks occur in Africa, usually associated with exposure to bats in mines or caves, and sometimes with secondary human-to-human transmission. Outbreaks outside of Africa have also occurred due to importation of infected monkeys. Although all previous Marburg virus disease outbreaks have been brought under control without vaccin…
