Adverse childhood experiences and child behavioral health trajectory from early childhood to adolescence: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) profoundly influence child development. Different patterns of ACEs among boys and girls may be associated with different developmental trajectories. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify patterns of ACEs at age three and tested the associations of these patterns with child behavioral health problems from age three to age fifteen. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: This study used data (N = 4898) from the Fragile Families Child Wellbeing Study. METHODS: First, this study conducted latent class analysis (LCA) across ten indicators of ACEs at age 3. LC

Mother-child cardiometabolic health 4-10 years after pregnancy complicated by obesity with and without gestational diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity in pregnancy and gestational diabetes (GDM) increase cardiometabolic disease risk but are difficult to disentangle. This study aimed to test the hypothesis that 4-10 years after a pregnancy complicated by overweight/obesity and GDM (OB-GDM), women and children would have greater adiposity and poorer cardiometabolic health than those with overweight/obesity (OB) or normal weight (NW) and no GDM during the index pregnancy. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, mother-child dyads were stratified into three groups based on maternal health status during pregnancy (OB-GDM = 67;

Introduction to the Site-specific Etiologic Results From the Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) Study.

The Pneumonia Etiology Research for Child Health (PERCH) study evaluated the etiology of severe and very severe pneumonia in children hospitalized in 7 African and Asian countries. Here, we summarize the highlights of in-depth site-specific etiology analyses published separately in this issue, including how etiology varies by age, mortality status, malnutrition, severity, HIV status, and more. These site-specific results impart important lessons that can inform disease control policy implications.

Sleep problems among adolescents within child and adolescent mental health services. An epidemiological study with registry linkage.

Sleep problems are prevalent among adolescents, especially among those diagnosed with mental health disorders. There is insufficient knowledge about sleep among adolescents within child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in comparison to the general population. The data are drawn from the youth@hordaland study, a large population-based study conducted in 2012, linked to the Norwegian Patient Registry (NPR) (n = 9077). Psychiatric disorders were based on clinical diagnoses from the NPR, while insomnia, delayed sleep-wake-phase disorder (DSWPD), and other sleep problems/patterns were

Health Status of Immigrant Children and Environmental Survey of Child Daycare Centers in Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand.

Samut Sakhon is a Thai province popular among immigrants attracted to work in factories and the Thai food industry, especially people from Myanmar. Poor personal-hygiene behaviors, crowded accommodation and limited sanitation, result in health problems among immigrant workers. Various infectious diseases among this group are seen and managed by Samut Sakhon General Hospital. The impact of intestinal parasitic infections on public health is well known; they can spread from infected immigrant areas to uninfected areas via close contact and fecal-oral transmission from contaminated food and water

Child Sexual Abuse and Its Relationship With Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents and Young Adults in Taipei.

This study explores the association of child sexual abuse (CSA) with subsequent health risk behaviors among a cross-section of 4354 adolescents and young adults surveyed in urban and rural Taipei. Descriptive analysis and logistic regressions were employed. The overall proportion of CSA was 5.15%, with more females (6.14%) than males (4.16%) likely to experience CSA. CSA was differently associated with multiple adverse health outcomes, after adjusting other factors, such as age, residence, economic status, education, employment status, and household instability. Both males and females with CSA

ADAM33 genetic polymorphisms, smoking, and rhinoconjunctivitis in Japanese women: the Kyushu Okinawa Maternal and Child Health Study.

Two previous studies have demonstrated a significant relationship between ADAM33 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and allergic rhinitis. Here, we investigated this issue in young adult Japanese women. The study included 393 women who met the criteria of the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) for rhinoconjunctivitis. Controls included 767 women without rhinoconjunctivitis according to the ISAAC criteria who had not been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis by a doctor. The GC genotype of rs2787094, the CT genotype of rs628977, and the haplotype containing the rs2

Gambling, housing conditions, community contexts and child health in remote indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Recent government reports have identified gambling, along with alcohol abuse, drug abuse and pornography, as contributing to child neglect and abuse in Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory (NT). These reports also identify gaps in empirical evidence upon which to base sound policy. To address this shortfall, data from ten remote Indigenous communities was analysed to determine the relationship between gambling problems, housing conditions, community contexts and child health in indigenous communities. METHODS: Logistic regression was used to assess associations between…

[Reduction of mother-child transmission of HIV infection in Africa: from clinical research to public health programs].

More and more African women are infected by HIV. As a result the mother-to-child transmission (MCT) rate is rising. Various prevention techniques have been assessed in randomized clinical trials in Africa but results need to be discussed to understand the full implications for prevention programs. To gain insight into this issue, we reviewed 11 randomized trials conducted in Africa and several other studies from developed countries. Trials using antiretroviral (ARV) drugs demonstrated good results for prevention of MCT in the first six months of life using abbreviated regimens involving either
