Climate change and biodiversity loss are global environmental crises driving emerging infectious diseases, including bat-borne pathogens of public health significance: Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, classic rabies virus, and Australian bat lyssavirus, as well as the fungus Histoplasma This review presents the evidence on the mechanisms of transmission, impact, and prevention and management strategies relevant to each of these pathogens. Transmission pathways vary between pathogens but often involve exposure to body fluids or excreta of a bat or other infected animal or human. The diseases asso

Insectivorous bats navigate mainly by echolocation, but may also use visual, olfactory, and magnetic cues when travelling long distances. Parsing the relative contributions of different senses for navigation is difficult in wild bats. In the lab, spatial navigation in rodents is often studied using different maze assays, including the widely employed multiple T-mazes. Here, we trained crawling Mexican free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) to navigate a multiple T-maze within an artificial magnetic field and then manipulated the sensory environment to quantify the relative importance of visi

Bats are reservoir hosts for numerous well-known zoonotic viruses, but their broader virus-hosting capacities remain understudied. Picornavirales are an order of enteric viruses that cause disease across a wide range of mammalian hosts, including Hepatitis A in humans and foot-and-mouth disease in ungulates. Host-switching and recombination drive the diversification of Picornavirales worldwide. Picornaviridae and Caliciviridae (families within Picornavirales) have been described in bats across mainland Africa, but surveillance for these viruses has been rare in the Southwest Indian Ocean Islan

Bats have unique immunological characteristics among vertebrates. Understanding how the immune system responds during the life cycle of bat populations is crucial for grasping how their defenses against infection vary during critical life events. We used the lesser long-nosed bat (Leptonycteris yerbabuenae) as a model to assess adaptive humoral immunity (total immunoglobulin G concentration, tIgG) at different periods during the year involving different ages, reproductive conditions and migratory habits (females migrate seasonally to give birth while males are resident). We also determined the

BACKGROUND: Blastocystis is a common parasite found in the human intestine, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhoea. Bats are potential hosts for this parasite, but little is known about their infection with Blastocystis.
OBJECTIVE: Given the diversity of bat species in Iran, this study aimed to investigate Blastocystis infection in bats caught in the southwestern and western regions of the country.
METHODS: Faecal samples were collected from 115 bats from five caves located in Fars, Kurdistan, and Kermanshah provinces. DNA was extracted, using the phenol-chloroform

Bats harbor diverse viruses pathogenic in other mammals, typically without obvious signs of clinical disease, attributed to an immune system that balances antiviral immunity with disease tolerance. It has been hypothesized that this balanced immune system may have arisen, at least in part, in response to the evolution of flight, which generates cellular stress, and subsequent selection for reduced inflammation and disease tolerance in bats. A major component of antiviral immunity is restriction factors (RFs). RFs are host cell proteins representing the first line of antiviral defense in all ma

BACKGROUND: Haemosporida is a diverse order of vector-borne apicomplexan parasites infecting terrestrial vertebrates worldwide, including humans, but the evolutionary relationships among its genera remain unresolved. The phylogenetic placement of two bat-restricted genera, Nycteria and Polychromophilus, both of which lack erythrocytic schizogony, has varied across studies depending on taxon sampling and marker choice.
METHODS: To address this problem, an expanded dataset of near-complete mitochondrial (mtDNA) genomes together with nine nuclear loci were analyzed.
RESULTS: Phylogenetic analys

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly virulent zoonotic virus classified as a priority pathogen and biohazard. In 2014, an outbreak of NiV-like disease in the Province of Sultan Kudarat, Mindanao, Philippines resulted in a 53% case fatality rate. Here, we identified wildlife bat hosts of NiV by conducting monthly serological surveillance of flying foxes and other native frugivorous bat species across Luzon. We estimated 13.92% NiV seroprevalence in native flying foxes. We also detected NiV neutralizing activity in some flying fox sera and identified factors such as age and seasonality as drivers of hi

Echolocating big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) perceive a target's reflecting parts, or glints, from spectral peaks and nulls in echoes. Glints serve as cues for object size and shape. In this exploratory study, we investigated whether the scalp-recorded auditory brainstem response (ABR) carries information about glints. We show that ABR amplitude, latency, and root mean square energy do not differentiate between glints in a manner paralleling the bat's perception. ABR recordings, even though they encode some perceptually relevant features of echoes, may not be sensitive enough to distinguish

Viral coinfections and their impact on long-term immunity represent an understudied area in disease ecology and infectious disease research. Coinfections can influence the host's susceptibility to future infections, alter host and pathogen population dynamics, modify infection and shedding patterns, impose evolutionary pressures, and affect the risk of zoonotic spillover. Egyptian rousette bats (ERB; Rousettus aegyptiacus; common name: Egyptian rousettes) are a natural reservoir host for Marburg virus (MARV) and Ravn virus (RAVV), as well as a vertebrate reservoir for Kasokero virus (KASV) and

INTRODUCTION: Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs) are the only known natural reservoir of Marburg virus (MARV), etiologic agent of a highly-pathogenic zoonotic viral hemorrhagic fever. Evolutionary adaptations in ERBs allow for fine-tuned discrete pro-inflammatory immune responses that control MARV infection, yet permit population-level viral maintenance.
METHODS: To look for exclusive co-adapted responses between ERBs and MARV, we compared macrophage (MΦ) responses to MARV and Sudan virus (SUDV), a related filovirus not hosted by ERBs. We queried whether MARV counters normal ERB MΦ responses, illu

Bats are the natural reservoirs for a variety of emerging and re-emerging viruses. Among them, rabies virus (genus Lyssavirus, family Rhabdoviridae) is one of the first and most emblematic described in these animals. Since its first description, several new bat lyssaviruses have been regularly identified. In addition to lyssaviruses, other bat rhabdoviruses have also been discovered, including members of the genera Vesiculovirus, Ledantevirus and, more recently, Alphanemrhavirus and Tupavirus. However, the family Rhabdoviridae is one of the most abundant and diverse viral families, with 434 of

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of important zoonotic agents in Brazil in urban bats and to evaluate the existence of coinfections in bats diagnosed with rabies. In 2021, organ samples from 52 bats from urban areas in southeastern Brazil were used to diagnose rabies and other zoonoses occurring in the region. The positive samples were sequenced, characterized and included in GenBank. A co-infection involving the rabies virus, Bartonella koehlerae, and Leishmania infantum was identified in a Black Myotis bat collected from a household in São Manuel, a city endemic for visc

Echolocating bats are among the most social and vocal of all mammals. These animals are ideal subjects for functional MRI (fMRI) studies of auditory social communication given their relatively hypertrophic limbic and auditory neural structures and their reduced ability to hear MRI gradient noise. Yet, no resting-state networks relevant to social cognition (e.g., default mode-like networks or DMLNs) have been identified in bats since there are few, if any, fMRI studies in the chiropteran order. Here, we acquired fMRI data at 7 Tesla from nine lightly anesthetized pale spear-nosed bats (Phyllost…

Orthohepadnavirus causes chronic hepatitis in a broad range of mammals, including primates, cats, woodchucks, and bats. Hepatitis B virus (HBV) X protein inhibits type-I interferon (IFN) signaling, thereby promoting HBV escape from the human innate immune system and establishing persistent infection. However, whether X proteins of Orthohepadnavirus viruses in other species display a similar inhibitory activity remains unknown. Here, we investigated the anti-IFN activity of 17 Orthohepadnavirus X proteins derived from various hosts. We observed conserved activity of Orthohepadnavirus X proteins

Resilience of mammals to anthropogenic climate and land-use changes is associated with the maintenance of adequate responses of several fitness-related traits such as those related to immune functions. Isolated and combined effects of decreased food availability and increased ambient temperature can lead to immunosuppression and greater susceptibility to disease. Our study tested the general hypothesis that decreased food availability, increased ambient temperature and the combined effect of both factors would affect selected physiological and behavioral components associated with the innate i

We derive an equation that applies for the wing-beat frequency of flying animals and to the fin-stroke frequency of diving animals like penguins and whales. The equation states that the wing/fin-beat frequency is proportional to the square root of the animal's mass divided by the wing area. Data for birds, insects, bats, and even a robotic bird-supplemented by data for whales and penguins that must swim to stay submerged-show that the constant of proportionality is to a good approximation the same across all species; thus the equation is universal. The wing/fin-beat frequency equation is deriv
