OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to determine the incidence of isolated choroid plexus cysts in association with trisomy 18 and other abnormalities.
STUDY DESIGN: All patients from June 1992 through December 1995 were followed up after a screening ultrasonography. Any patient with a choroid plexus cyst was offered genetic counseling and an amniocentesis. Screening ultrasonographic examinations were performed on 16,059 patients, and 301 patients had a fetus with a choroid plexus cyst. One hundred thirty patients elected to have an amniocentesis. Two female infants with callosal agenesis, infantile spasms, chorioretinal lacunae, optic disc colobomas and cortical heterotopias were diagnosed with Aicardi syndrome. A choroid plexus papilloma was found in one patient, and choroid plexus cysts were found in the other. Choroid plexus lesions are common findings in the Aicardi syndrome and are discussed in this paper.

Choroid plexus cysts (CPC) in the fetus are still the subject of considerable debate in the literature. A rare case of choroid plexus papilloma in the third ventricle is presented. A 19 year old male patient was admitted to our hospital for further examination of a head injury. The relationship between ciliochoroidal detachment on the late hypotensive results of trabeculectomy was studied in 64 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma. Seventy patients, matched for their initial condition and age, in whom the postoperative period ran without complications, made up the reference group. The mean follow-up period was 24.2 months. Ciliochoroidal detachment was found to have virtually no effect on the late hypotensive results of trabeculectomy, though such detachment had a negative effect on the lens transparency.

Over a 22-month period, 1045 second-trimester pregnancies were evaluated with ultrasound for the presence of choroid plexus cysts. The frequency of fetal choroid plexus cysts was 3.6% (38/1045). Abdominal deposits of a choroid plexus carcinoma in a patient with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt were cytologically diagnosed by examination of ascitic fluid after regression of the primary tumor. The morphology of the malignant cells in ascitic fluid was more similar to that of mesothelial cells than to the appearance of cells from this lesion in cerebrospinal fluid.

In a retrospective study of choroidal and ciliary body malignant melanomas in black patients, we found that the death rates due to metastatic melanoma after enucleation were equivalent for 39 blacks and 3,339 whites. When compared with a control group of whites, it was found that blacks were more likely to have secondary glaucoma and inflammation prior to enucleation. A patient with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage is reported. CT scan evidenced a high-density, round lesion in the anterior part of the third ventricle. A full angiographic study demonstrated no vascular malformation. After removal of a circumscribed hematoma in the anterior part of the third ventricle, an arteriovenous malformation of the choroid plexus was excised.

This paper is based on 21 patients with metastases of the choroid from extraocular tumors, observed over a period of 25 years (1952--1977) at Erlangen University Eye Clinic. Approximately 70% of these relatively rare metastases of the choroid are caused by cancer of the breast. Ophthalmoscopically, they are usually localized to the left of the posterior pole and are yellowish. In about 20% of the cases both eyes are affected.
