Disseminated and migratory sparganosis in the central nervous system: A case report and literature review of combined spinal and intracranial involvement.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) sparganosis is an exceptionally rare parasitic infection caused by the larvae of Spirometra species … esonance imaging revealed intracranial lesions, and subsequent surgery confirmed sparganosis in the cisterna magna. One year after brain surgery and ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement, the patient experienced progressive headaches accompanied by confusion. Under the initial misdiagnosis of brain abscess, she was inadvertently treated with intravenous metronida …

Cerebrospinal and interstitial fluid transport via the glymphatic pathway modeled by optimal mass transport.

The glymphatic pathway is a system which facilitates continuous cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF) exchange and plays a … lowing administration of a small molecular weight paramagnetic tracer into the CSF reservoir of the cisterna magna. We use Optimal Mass Transport (OMT) to model the glymphatic flow vector field, and then analyze the flow to find the network of CSF-ISF flow channels. We use 3D visualization computational tools to visualize the OMT defined network of CSF-ISF flow …

Dynamic expression of the suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 and cytokines in the cerebral basilar artery of rats with subarachnoid hemorrhage, and the effect of acetylcholine.

BACKGROUND: There are complex interactions between acetylcholine (ACh), the suppressor of cytokine signaling-3 (SOCS-3), and cytokines, however, little is known about their dynamic expression or their effects on cerebral vasospasm (CVS) after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Therefore, we aimed to describe and clarify the dynamic expression of SOCS-3 and cytokines after SAH, as well as the relationships between the levels of SOCS-3, cytokines, and ACh. METHODS: The rat model of single cisterna magna injection was used to mimic acute SAH. The degree of CVS was indicated by lumen diameter and art…

Three-dimensional MR visualization of the intracisternal course of the cranial nerves V-VIII by virtual cisternoscopy.

PURPOSE: A post-processing protocol for 3D visualization of the cranial nerves V-VIII along their intracisternal course is presented. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six healthy volunteers underwent MR imaging (1.5 T) to obtain high-resolution heavily T2-weighted data sets (3DFT CISS) with isotropic voxels (0.5 mm3). The data sets were post-processed by using volume rendering software in order to visualize the intracisternal courses of the cranial nerves V-VIII as well as their root entry zones. The data acquisition and post-processing protocol was then applied in 14 patients with a suspected neural co

Modulation of cocaine-induced motor activity in the rat by opioid receptor agonists.

Selective opioid-receptor agonists were tested in combination with cocaine to determine the effect on the motor activity of rats. Cocaine produced dose-dependent increases in locomotor activity (distance traveled). The cocaine-induced increase in locomotor activity was potentiated by the selective delta-opioid receptor agonist [D-Pen2-D-Pen5]enkephalin (DPDPE). This potentiation was blocked by the general opioid receptor antagonist naltrexone, as well as by the selective opioid receptor antagonists beta-FNA (mu-opioid receptor) and naltrindole (delta-opioid receptor). DPDPE also potentiated th

[Scanning the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord following endolumbar and cisternal administration of colloid solutions of radioisotopes].

The patency of the subarachnoid space of the spinal cord was studied by means of radioisotopes in 82 patients, among whom 18 had tumors of the spinal cord, 22 had herniation of the intervertebral disk, 18 had complicated fractures of the spine, and 11 had inflammatory diseases of the spinal cord and its meninges. Colloidal solutions of 198Au, 111In, and 131I were used for endolumbar and cisternal infusion. Scanning of the vertebral canal provides for the diagnosis of the level, degree, and extent of its compression caused by various vertebro-medullary pathologic conditions. The method is spari

Brain imaging.

Imaging with radionuclides should be used in a complementary fashion with other neuroradiologic techniques. It is useful in the early detection and evaluation of intracranial neoplasm, cerebrovascular accident and abscess, and in postsurgical follow-up. Cisternography yields useful information about the functional status of cerebrospinal fluid pathways. Computerized axial tomography is a new technique of great promise that produces a cross-sectional image of the brain.

Raised intracranial pressure and cerebral blood flow. 4. Intracranial pressure gradients and regional cerebral blood flow.

Intracranial pressure was raised by expansion of a supratentorial subdural ballon in anaesthetized baboons. Pressures were measured at several sites, both supratentorial and infratentorial, and cerebral blood flow was measured in each cerebral hemisphere separately. Pressures recorded from the right and left lateral ventricles corresponded closely throughout. Highly significant correlations were also obtained between the pressures in the right and left subdural spaces and the mean intraventricular pressure. There was, thus, no evidence of intracompartmental pressure gradients within the suprat

Single median maxillary central incisor syndrome and variant in SMO gene associated with SHH pathway.

Solitary median maxillary central incisor syndrome (SMMCI) is a rare congenital oronasal-dental midline anomaly. The aim of this paper is a presentation of a patient with SMMCI without other visible dentofacial anomalies, with a potentially new molecular etiology consisting of a gene-gene reaction and conservative therapeutic approach to nasal obstruction. Potentially pathogenic variants in the SMO gene (p.Gly422Glu) and in P2RY13 gene (p.Trp205*) inherited from the probant's father, and in the PLD2 gene (p.Gln319fs), inherited from the mother were found. A multidisciplinary approach is necess

Evaluation of a novel mouse model of intracisternal strychnine-induced trigeminal allodynia.

PURPOSE: Intractable neuropathic dynamic allodynia remains one of the major symptoms of human trigeminal neuropathy and is commonly accepted to be the most excruciatingly painful condition known to humankind. At present, a validated animal model of this disorder is necessary for efficient and effective development of novel drug treatments. Intracisternal strychnine in rats has been shown to result in localized trigeminal dynamic allodynia, thus representing a possible model of trigeminal neuralgia. The purpose of this study was to validate a mouse model of trigeminal glycinergic inhibitory dys
