Soil is the Earth's largest carbon (C) reservoir, holding nearly twice as much C as the atmosphere. Climate change-induced temperature increases could enhance soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, potentially releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, thus resulting in a positive feedback to climate change. This presents the question: how can we define the response of SOM decomposition rates to short-term changes in temperature? Can we utilize this data to fit mechanistically defined equations in Earth system models for climate predictions? Most research to date has focused on labo

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Global warming is shortening winters in temperate ecosystems, limiting cold stratification for seeds with physiological dormancy (PD). The consequences of incomplete dormancy release can cascade beyond germination, potentially affecting fitness in subsequent life-stages, yet this remains understudied in trees. Here we assess the effects of insufficient stratification on germination, leaf emergence and seedling performance in three broad-range temperate tree species. We further evaluate how reduced cold stratification under climate change may drive shifts in these traits ac

Globally, many insect populations are declining, prompting calls for action. Yet these findings have also prompted discussion about sampling methods and interpretation of long-term datasets. As insect monitoring and research efforts increase, it is critical to quantify the effectiveness of sampling methods. This is especially true if sampling biases of different methods covary with climate, which is also changing over time. We assess the effectiveness of two types of flight intercept traps commonly used for beetles, a diverse insect group responsible for numerous ecosystem services, under diff

The continued provision of water from rivers in the southwestern United States to downstream cities, natural communities and species is at risk due to higher temperatures and drought conditions in recent decades. Snowpack and snowfall levels have declined, snowmelt and peak spring flows are arriving earlier, and summer flows have declined. Concurrent to climate change and variation, a century of fire suppression has resulted in dramatic changes to forest conditions, and yet, few studies have focused on determining the degree to which changing forests have altered flows. In this study, we evalu

BACKGROUND: Working in a hospital can be both rewarding and stressful. Whether one or the other is dominant depends on a number of factors ranging from shift work, physical demands, responsibilities and time pressure to job autonomy, work climate and leisure time.
AIM: This study aimed to examine associations between temporal work stressors and satisfaction with work, life and health among health professionals in general, and nurses and physicians in particular. Associations were further investigated for possible mediating and intervening factors.
METHODS: Cross-sectional survey data on 1232

This research explored climate pictures as affect-eliciting stimuli, and how the affective experiences can have an impact on pro-environmental intentions. In an online within-subject design experiment (N = 464), participants engaged in twelve experimental trials, each containing one picture of a wildfire, one of a forest, and one depicting a pro-environmental action, presented in various orders. Following each trial, participants rated their affective experiences and pro-environmental intentions. The results indicated that affective valence (positive-negative experience) was sensitive to the p

In recent decades, dengue has been expanding rapidly in the tropical cities. Even though environmental factors and landscape features profoundly impact dengue vector abundance and disease epidemiology, significant gaps exist in understanding the role of local environmental heterogeneity on dengue epidemiology in India. In this study, we assessed the role of remotely sensed climatic factors (rainfall, temperature and humidity) and landscape variables (land use pattern, vegetation and built up density) on dengue incidence (2012-2019) in Bhopal city, Central India. Dengue hotspots in the city wer

The emergence of dengue viruses in new, susceptible human populations worldwide is increasingly influenced by a combination of local and global human movements and favorable environmental conditions. While various mathematical models have explored the impact of environmental factors on dengue outbreaks, the significant role of human mobility both internationally and domestically in transmitting the disease has been less frequently addressed. In this context, we introduce a modeling framework that integrates the effects of international travel-induced imported cases, climatic conditions, and lo

During the last century, a great deal of effort has been directed toward determining soil erosion rates using various methods under a wide range of climatic conditions, soil types, land uses, topography, and among others. Therefore, to better understand soil erosion studies in Morocco, a country with diverse physiography and climatic variations we undertook an analysis of national data of several soil erosion modeling and fingerprinting. The approach used for this research is a review of scientific articles, conference papers and thesis on soil erosion, focusing more on categorization of the d

In the vegetation root zone, infiltration (Inf) parts in two directions with distinct Earth-system functions. One goes up as evapotranspiration (E + Tr), returning Inf to the atmosphere (short-circuiting) and affecting short-term weather/climate and the carbon cycle. The other goes down as deep drainage (DD), flushing the regolith, mobilizing nutrients/contaminates and dissolved minerals into aquifers and rivers, eventually reaching the ocean (long-circuiting) thus regulating global biogeochemical cycles and long-term climate. We ask, what is the modern-day global structure in short- vs. long-

Introduced plants represent unique opportunities to understand how diverse phenotypic traits vary across broad geographic scales. However, clear generalizable principles about genetically based variation in key functional plant traits across geographic clines remain elusive. For example, functional plant traits often vary predictably across climatic gradients, yet these emergent patterns may be obscured by other factors that may collectively shape trait expression across a species' range, such as species-level differences or understudied non-climatic factors that operate across latitude. BACKGROUND: With the current climate change crisis and its influence on infectious disease transmission there is an increased desire to understand its impact on infectious diseases globally. Hantaviruses are found worldwide, causing infectious diseases such as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS)/hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in tropical regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). These regions are inherently vulnerable to climate change impacts, infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters. Hantaviruses are zoonoti

Understanding how grassland productivity responds to increasing aridity is critical under climate change, yet whether consistent thresholds exist and how underlying mechanisms shift remain unclear. Here, we conducted a global meta-analysis to examine the response of aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) to the aridity index (AI) and the role of plant functional traits. ANPP showed a significant nonlinear relationship with AI, with a threshold at AI ≈ 0.51. Below this threshold, ANPP increased strongly with AI, whereas this relationship weakened above it. This threshold coincided with a s

Somalia faces a dual crisis of high chronic disease burden and extreme climate vulnerability. This study examines the predictors of health-seeking behavior (HSB) for chronic diseases among Somali households. Using data from the 2020 Somali Demographic and Health Survey (SDHS), survey-weighted probit model was applied to a sample of 69,998 individuals to analyze predictors of regular treatment-seeking behavior. Approximately 6.6% of the population reported a chronic disease, with 48.8% of those individuals seeking regular treatment. Wealth (AME = 0.094, p < 0.001) and urban residence (AME = 0.0

This study examines whether text-based climate disclosure is associated with suspected stock market manipulation. Using dataset of China's A-share listed firms from 2010 to 2021, we construct a firm-level measure of reported climate disclosure from annual reports and a suspected manipulation count from opening-price, closing-price, and continuous-trading anomalies. we find that a one-unit increase in text-based climate disclosure is associated with 0.282 more suspected manipulation episodes, equivalent to 1.91% of the sample mean. The result remains robust to alternative clustering, sample res

Intensive poultry production in humid subtropical agro-ecologies faces unique environmental challenges that compromise carcass quality, welfare, and food security. While climatic influences are recognized, the temporal dimensions of these effects remain largely underexplored. This study quantified the immediate and time-lagged (1-3 months) influences of climatic variables on 12 causes of broiler carcass condemnation in a representative subtropical hub. Longitudinal data (2021-2023) from federally inspected slaughterhouses in Santa Catarina, Brazil, a relevant case study for poultry production

A comprehensive understanding of the spatial distribution and correlates of infection are key for the planning of disease control programs and assessing the feasibility of elimination and/or eradication. In this work, we used species distribution modeling to predict the environmental suitability of the Guinea worm (Dracunculus medinensis) and identify important climatic and sociodemographic risk factors. Using Guinea worm surveillance data collected by the Chad Guinea Worm Eradication Program (CGWEP) from 2010 to 2022 in combination with remotely sensed climate and sociodemographic correlates

East Africa has been identified as a region where vector-borne and zoonotic diseases are most likely to emerge or re-emerge and where morbidity and mortality from these diseases is significant. Understanding when and where humans are most likely to be exposed to vector-borne and zoonotic disease agents in this region can aid in targeting limited prevention and control resources. Often, spatial and temporal distributions of vectors and vector-borne disease agents are predictable based on climatic variables. However, because of coarse meteorological observation networks, appropriately scaled and
