The use of somatostatin to manage diarrhea associated with the short gut syndrome is impractical because of its need to be given by continuous infusion and a rebound effect on stool output with cessation of therapy. Octreotide has been used more successfully to control stool and electrolyte losses in patients with shortened gastrointestinal tracts. Fenofibrate is a lipid-regulating drug which is structurally related to other fibric acid derivatives, such as clofibrate. At the recommended dosage of 200 to 400 mg daily, it produces substantial reductions in plasma triglyceride levels in hypertriglyceridaemic patients and in plasma total cholesterol levels in hypercholesterolaemic patients. High density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol levels are generally increased in patients with low pretreatment values. Fenofibrate appears to be equally effective in diabetic patients with hyperlipoproteinaemia without adversely affecting glycaemic control.

A review of the literature indicates that sucralfate attains a healing rate of 79 percent for duodenal ulcer and 75 percent for gastric ulcer in four and eight weeks, respectively, rates not different from those reported for cimetidine and ranitidine. Calcitonin has been used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis already for several years. The results have been promising. Especially patients with high-turnover osteoporosis respond satisfactorily to the treatment. In the immediate postmenopausal period calcitonin should be considered appropriate if estrogens are either contraindicated or refused by the patient.
