Effect of cognitive enhancement therapy for early course schizophrenia on gray matter volume: A confirmatory multisite randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Enhancement Therapy (CET) is an evidence-based cognitive remediation intervention for early course schizophrenia with established benefits for cognition. CET may protect against broad temporolimbic gray matter volume loss associated with cognitive improvement, but this finding has yet to be replicated. This research reexamined if CET protects against temporolimbic gray matter volume loss in an independent and larger multisite early course sample, and if this neuroprotective effect predicts cognitive and social adjustment improvement. METHODS: Ninety-nine participants wit

Computerized Cognitive Remediation Affects White Matter Microstructure in Relation to Improved Cognitive Function in Adults with Chronic Traumatic Brain Injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) frequently results in long-term cognitive deficits due to traumatic axonal injury and disruption of structural brain connectivity. Computerized cognitive remediation (CCR) has shown promise for improving cognitive outcomes in chronic TBI; however, diffusion imaging studies evaluating its effectiveness have often relied on tensor-based metrics that are limited in their ability to detect subtle treatment-related changes. This study used correlational tractography, a diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) connectometry method sensitive to localized, fiber-specifi

Building Resilience and Improving Neurocognition (BRAIN): Feasibility and acceptability of a novel, multimodal telehealth cognitive rehabilitation intervention.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive deficits can impact daily functioning, general health, and psychological functioning. Multimodal group rehabilitation interventions designed for telehealth administration can optimally provide access and essential services for those who would otherwise not seek these services. We conducted a quality improvement project examining the feasibility and acceptability of Building Resilience and Improving Neurocognition (BRAIN), an eight-week multimodal telehealth cognitive rehabilitation group. METHOD: Participants were veterans referred to a VA neuropsychology clinic for group

Harnessing neuroplasticity.

Twenty years ago, cognitive impairments were recognized as an unmet treatment need in schizophrenia. Basic science discoveries in neuroplasticity had led to cognitive training approaches for dyslexia. We wondered whether a similar approach could target working memory deficits in schizophrenia by harnessing plasticity in the auditory cortex. Our per protocol experimental therapeutics studies tested the hypothesis that sharpening auditory cortical representations would result in better verbal learning and memory. We also later studied the effects of intensive training of basic social cognitive o…

The effect of learning an individualized song on autobiographical memory recall in individuals with Alzheimer's disease: A pilot study.

Numerous neuropsychological studies have investigated the effect of music on patients with Alzheimer's disease. Findings suggest that music can improve behavioral symptoms, but its potential effects on cognitive abilities of patients still require more investigation. In this 2 × 2 crossover study, we measured the impact of learning an individualized song on autobiographical memory recall and other cognitive abilities in 12 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. For each patient, one favorite song of the patient and one autobiographical memory with positive valence were associated

Spatial training promotes short-term survival and neuron-like differentiation of newborn cells in Aβ1-42-injected rats.

Neurogenesis plays a role in hippocampus-dependent learning and impaired neurogenesis may correlate with cognitive deficits in Alzheimer's disease. Spatial training influences the production and fate of newborn cells in hippocampus of normal animals, whereas the effects on neurogenesis in Alzheimer-like animal are not reported until now. Here, for the first time, we investigated the effect of Morris water maze training on proliferation, survival, apoptosis, migration, and differentiation of newborn cells in β-amyloid-treated Alzheimer-like rats. We found that spatial training could preserve a

Development and validation of a nomogram for identifying cognitive impairment in patients with leukoaraiosis.

BACKGROUND: Leukoaraiosis (LA) is a common cerebral small vessel disease in elderly populations that frequently leads to cognitive impairment and may progress to vascular dementia. Early identification of cognitive dysfunction remains challenging due to the subtle onset and lack of specific biomarkers. OBJECTIVE: To identify key factors associated with cognitive impairment in LA patients and develop a logistic regression-based identification model to facilitate early clinical recognition and intervention. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study included 390 LA patients admitted to

BACKGROUND: To address the challenges posed by an aging society and reduce the incidence of falls and cognitive decline, there is a need for scientifically validated training methods that enhance both balance and cognitive function in older adults. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the effects of Baduanjin and Resistance Band training on improving balance and cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: A total of 93 community-dwelling older adults (mean age: 64.86 ± 3.13 years) were assigned according to the principle of residential proximity into three groups: Baduanjin

Improved Mood Boosts Memory Training Gains in Older Adults With Subjective Memory Complaints via Enhanced Amygdala-hippocampal Connectivity.

OBJECTIVE: Older adults with subjective memory complaints (SMC) have a higher risk of dementia and commonly demonstrate symptoms of anxiety. This study examined the neural correlates of group counseling (GC)-boosted memory training (MT) gains. DESIGN: This study was an active, controlled, randomized trial. SETTING: Neighborhoods near the Institute of Psychology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). PARTICIPANTS: Community-dwelling older adults, aged 60 or above with a minimum of 6 years of education, were recruited through advertisements and flyers posted at community service stations.

INCOG 2.0 Guidelines for Cognitive Rehabilitation Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Part I: Posttraumatic Amnesia.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic amnesia (PTA) is a common occurrence following moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and emergence from coma. It is characterized by confusion, disorientation, retrograde and anterograde amnesia, poor attention and frequently, agitation. Clinicians and family need guidelines to support management practices during this phase. METHODS: An international team of researchers and clinicians (known as INCOG) met to update the INCOG guidelines for assessment and management of PTA. Previous recommendations and audit criteria were updated on the basis of review of

Locating causal hubs of memory consolidation in spontaneous brain network in male mice.

Memory consolidation after learning involves spontaneous, brain-wide network reorganization during rest and sleep, but how this is achieved is still poorly understood. Current theory suggests that the hippocampus is pivotal for this reshaping of connectivity. Using fMRI in male mice, we identify that a different set of spontaneous networks and their hubs are instrumental in consolidating memory during post-learning rest. We found that two types of spatial memory training invoke distinct functional connections, but that a network of the sensory cortex and subcortical areas is common for both ta
