A partial cDNA sequence coding for the human extracellular matrix protein undulin has been completed. The completed sequence provides conclusive evidence for the suggested identity of undulin and collagen type XIV. We performed collagen analysis in 38 patients with osteogenesis imperfecta. In order to assess the clinical benefit of the analysis, all cases were studied retrospectively. Five patients were children with lethal osteogenesis imperfecta, in whom the diagnosis was confirmed after termination of pregnancy. Nineteen men with post-prostatectomy urinary incontinence grade II and III (mean follow-up 12.7 months) underwent periurethral injections of collagen. In all, 37 procedures were performed; 58% of the patients underwent the procedure at least twice. A mean of 16 ml collagen was injected. OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of collagen shields on ulceration of rabbit corneas after alkali burn.
METHODS: After a 60-second 2N sodium hydroxide burn to rabbit corneas, 24-hour collagen shields were placed on the corneas daily for 21 days; control corneas did not receive collagen shields. INTRODUCTION: This study evaluates the results of vocal fold injection of bovine collagen.
METHODS: A group of patients were selected because they were not good candidates for other forms of treatment. This included patients with scarred vocal folds, bilateral vocal fold pathology with a small glottic gap, and unilateral vocal fold pathology with atrophy. Assessment used patient self-evaluation, perceptual judgments of voice recordings, laboratory data based on acoustic signal analysis, and aerodynamic measures during voice production. Vocal folds were also studied by videostroboscopy.
