BACKGROUND/AIM: We investigated nine novel biomarkers of extracellular matrix (ECM) remodelling in a rat model of liver fibrosis.

Specific antibodies against types I and III collagens and procollagens were used to localize these proteins in cultured human cells. These studies indicate that the same cell makes both proteins. In years 2001-2003 six children (3 boys ond 3 girls) from 2.1 to 18.7 years old with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) were treated in our clinic. Besides clinical and radiological evaluation, densitometry and biochemical analysis of collagen were performed. Biochemical analysis was performed on cultured in vitro fibroblasts from the skin biopsies. Based on this findings 1 child was graded as type I of OI, 4 children as type III and 1 as type IV. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The basement membrane zone (BMZ) is an anatomically defined region present in all types of skin and mucosa, linking the epithelium to the mesenchyme with a complex structure to provide adhesion. Altered antigenic expression of the BMZ is implicated in interface dermatoses, and the BMZ is targeted by autoantibodies in subepidermal immunobullous dermatoses. PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to evaluate corneal profiles of patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) due to a collagen I gene mutation.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional comparative study. There were 84 eyes from 42 patients with OI types I, III, and IV who were recruited from the OI Clinic at the Clinical Hospital of Porto Alegre, Brazil. All cases presented either COL1A1 or A2 gene mutations. Controls were matched by sex, age, and refractive error.
