We presented a case of critical illness polyneuropathy after bacterial peritonitis. A 62-year-old male was received an emergency colectomy because of perforation of the sigmoid colon five days after the endoscopic polypectomy. He developed sepsis from peritonitis after operation in spite of the antibiotics therapy. On 15-th hospital days he developed muscle weakness and numbness of all limbs. He needed an artificial ventilator due to respiratory failure. Hematological and blood chemical findings showed a leukocytosis and metabolic acidosis with renal dysfunction because of sepsis. Serum anti-C

Perforation of the rectum or sigmoid colon complicated 5 of 2200 barium-enema examinations performed during a 4-year period. Three patients with rectal perforations manifested by air extravasation were successfully treated with intravenous antibiotics and complete bowel rest. Two patients with barium extravasation were treated with immediate operation and colostomy. All five patients recovered. Perforation was found to be associated with a rectal stricture due to ulcerative colitis, a rectal cancer, an incarcerated inguinal hernia, fulminant ulcerative colitis, and a normal colon in an elderly

Malignant tumors of three types were synchronous in the same patient--sigmoid colon cancer and two extremely rare sarcomas, viz. hepatic leiomyosarcoma and hemangiosarcoma of the spleen. All tumors could be radically resected in one operation.

A canine model for chronic renal failure and bladder augmentation with a segment of stomach or sigmoid colon (or control) was developed to evaluate the possible benefit of net chloride ion excretion noted in an earlier canine model for gastrocystoplasty. Gastrocystoplasty animals behaved similar to control animals relative to the sigmoid cystoplasty animals, tolerated significantly greater acid loading, did not have hyperchloremia with acidosis and had less weight loss with acidosis. Gastrocystoplasty seems to be superior to sigmoid cystoplasty in the azotemic canine.

Per anal balloon dilatation of a sigmoid colon stricture caused by necrotizing enterocolitis allowed identification of a more proximal lesion which would otherwise have gone radiographically undetected. Repeated dilatations at two weeks and four weeks following the initial dilatation of the stricture resulted in relief of the stricture and obviated the need for surgical treatment of this lesion.

We report a case of a left psoas abscess resulting from a perforating carcinoma of the sigmoid colon. The chief complaints were edema of the left leg and pain in the left thigh. Single and double contrast barium-enema film demonstrated an extrinsic inflammatory mass distorting the sigmoid colon. A preoperative diagnosis of sigmoid carcinoma was not made on these examinations, nor on flexible colonoscopy. Carcinoma of the colon should be considered as a cause of an unexplained psoas abscess.

Manometric studies of the sigmoid colon were performed on 17 healthy volunteers and on 49 constipated patients, after a long period of fasting (18--20 hours). Motility was recorded using perfused catheters at basal level during 45 minutes, then 60 minutes after a 0.5 mg intravenous injection of neostigmine, and, finally, 30 minutes during and after a meal. Motor activity was assessed by a motility index (per cent of activity x mean amplitude of waves). In both normal and constipated patients, the basal motility index was very low (respectively 82 +/- 16 and 110 +/- 113). This low level of acti

Upper gastrointestinal series (UGIS) remains an important modality for gastric cancer screening; however, intestinal perforation after this examination, although rare, can result in life-threatening barium peritonitis. We report a case of sigmoid colon perforation after UGIS in a 47-year-old woman with previously asymptomatic colonic diverticulosis and discuss its implications for preexamination risk assessment. She developed abdominal pain two days after undergoing UGIS during a routine health checkup. Computed tomography showed free air and intraperitoneal barium leakage. Emergency surgery r

RATIONALE: Ingestion of removable dentures leading to gastrointestinal perforation is a rare but potentially life-threatening emergency, particularly in the elderly population due to diminished oral sensation and swallowing reflex. This article reports the management of a patient who developed sigmoid colon necrosis and perforation.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 76-year-old female presented to the emergency department with a 2-day history of nausea and left lower abdominal pain. Medical history collection confirmed that the patient had accidentally swallowed her removable denture 3 days ago.

INTRODUCTION: A malignant sigmoid colon-duodenal fistula is extremely rare, and optimal management strategies remain unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 66-year-old man was admitted to a local hospital with melena. Lower gastrointestinal endoscopy identified a circumferential type 3 tumor located in the sigmoid colon. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed extrinsic tumor invasion into the horizontal portion of the duodenum. Contrast-enhanced abdominal CT demonstrated irregular thickening of the sigmoid colon wall, which appeared to be contiguous with the horizontal portion of the duodenum, with

Colouterine fistula is an exceptionally rare pelvic fistula, typically arising from diverticulitis, malignancy, or trauma. The thick uterine myometrium serves as a natural barrier, rendering direct intestinal invasion of the uterine wall unlikely and thus complicating preoperative diagnosis. Dynamic real-time imaging plays a pivotal role in evaluating such lesions. This case report describes a 74-year-old woman patient who presented with a 1-month history of vaginal flatus and fecaloid discharge. The symptoms were caused by a colouterine fistula secondary to a sigmoid colon malignancy. Gynec

Colorectal cancer is one among the leading causes of death in the present world. Either the adverse effects of the chemotherapeutic drugs force the patients to discontinue the treatment or the deteriorated health status due to progression of the disease may lead to death. This is the study of a case of stage 3 sigmoid colon cancer which was managed by an integrated approach and led to the heathy survival of the patient after five years. Ayurvedic management was done to alleviate the side effects of chemotherapy and for the prevention of the recurrence of the disease. The patient was treated wi

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms characterized by perivascular epithelioid cell proliferation. They can occur in various organs, but colonic PEComas are exceptionally rare, showing diagnostic challenges due to their nonspecific clinical presentation and similar features to those of other colorectal tumors. We present a case of a 61-year-old female with defecation accompanied by blood clots, initially diagnosed with a suspected tumor in the sigmoid colon. Despite initial biopsy yielding non-informative material, repeat colonoscopy and imaging studies

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) of the colon are extremely rare and often present diagnostic challenges due to overlapping features with inflammatory or other neoplastic conditions. We report the case of a 43-year-old female initially referred for evaluation of presumed colitis who was found on colonoscopy to have a sigmoid mass. Initial biopsies showed inflammation without malignancy, but subsequent imaging and pathology confirmed a GIST. After multidisciplinary evaluation, she underwent an uncomplicated robotic-assisted partial colectomy. Final pathology confirmed a 2.2 × 1.9 × 0.6 c

Sigmoid volvulus and uterine torsion are both rare and challenging conditions in pregnancy, and the coexistence of these conditions is particularly difficult to diagnose. Herein, we report a case of a 38-year-old pregnant woman at 30 weeks of gestation, with a history of two prior cesarean sections, who presented with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and constipation, and was eventually diagnosed with both sigmoid volvulus and uterine torsion during surgery. Clinicians should consider the possibility of bowel obstruction when a pregnant woman presents with severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an intermediate tumor composed of differentiated myofibroblastic spindle cells with inflammatory cell infiltration. It can occur in all parts of the body, with the lungs being the most common, while the tissues outside the lungs, including the sigmoid colon, are rare. Herein, we present a case of a 10-year-old girl with sigmoid IMT who presented to our hospital with abdominal pain. An abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a well-defined, slightly low-density mass in her lower abdomen that was not clearly demarcated from the sigmoid colon. The m
