Alterations in the gut microbiota, known as gut dysbiosis, are associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There is a need for model systems that can recapitulate the IBD gut microbiome to better understand the mechanistic impact of differences in microbiota composition and its functional consequences in a controlled laboratory setting. To this end, we introduced fecal samples from patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), as well as from healthy control subjects, to miniature bioreactor arrays (MBRAs) and analyzed the microbial communities over time. We then perfor

Subtotal colectomy, preserving the ileocaecal valve and caecum, and caecoproctostomy has been recommended by some authors in the past and hypothetically it is a good a priori argument on the grounds of function for its use. The procedure has been employed in nine patients on different indications and the functional results assessed. When employed for treatment of chronic constipation or diverticular disease of the colon the functional results were poor. If the operation should be used at all it should probably be restricted to patients with an otherwise normal colorectal function. Even when em

Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), is characterized by sustained mucosal inflammation, disrupted epithelial barrier function, microbial dysbiosis, and impaired intestinal homeostasis. If chronic uncontrolled inflammation persists, it may lead to the development of colorectal cancer or other severe clinical complications. Emerging evidence suggests that cellular senescence promotes inflammatory cascades, aggravating UC symptoms and implicating a pathophysiological link to disease progression. Our previous studies have demonstrated that the anti-senescence compo

Renal fibrosis is a common pathological feature of chronic kidney disease (CKD) as it progresses to the end stage. Currently, about 10% of adults worldwide are affected by this disease. In recent years, significant progress has been made in the field of renal fibrosis treatment, with both traditional drugs and innovative therapies showing new hope. In this study, we propose a novel therapeutic strategy for renal fibrosis based on the traditional Chinese medicine concept of "medicinal and edible homology". This involves the use of a compound formulation comprising red ginseng, dandelion, and oy

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Microbiota composition and mechanisms of host-microbiota interactions in the esophagus are unclear. We aimed to uncover fundamental information about the esophageal microbiome and its potential significance to eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE).
METHODS: Microbiota composition, transplantation potential, and antibiotic responsiveness in the esophagus were established via 16S ribosomal RNA sequencing. Functional outcomes of microbiota colonization were assessed by RNA sequencing analysis of mouse esophageal epithelium and compared with the human EoE transcriptome. The impact of

Purpose: Left hemicolectomy is the standard surgical operation for a variety of colonic diseases, both benign and malignant. When colonic resection is extended, relocation of the small bowel loops can be difficult. Several techniques have been described to reposition the small intestine. Welti's technique consists in the passage of the entire small bowel to the left side of the abdomen, below the descending colon that is positioned on the right side. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 23 patients who underwent extended left hemicolectomy and reconstruction according to the Welti's technique

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of disorders that increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. This study has investigated the responses to rind of yellow mangosteen (Garcinia dulcis), usually discarded as waste, in a rat model of human metabolic syndrome. The rind contains higher concentrations of phytochemicals (such as garcinol, morelloflavone and citric acid) than the pulp. Male Wistar rats aged 8-9 weeks were fed either corn starch diet or high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet for 16 weeks, which were supplemented with 5% freeze-dried G. dulcis fruit rind powder during the last 8

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to analyse the role of inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) ligation during elective colonic resection for diverticular disease (DD) with respect to surgical outcome.
METHODS: All patients who underwent elective laparoscopic or open colonic resection for DD from January 2006 to December 2012 were studied. The patients were divided into two groups based on IMA ligation or preservation. The primary end point was to compare anastomotic leakage in the two groups. The secondary end points were operative time, stoma formation, overall post-operative complications, r

INTRODUCTION: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic gastrointestinal disease characterized by symptoms of abdominal pain and diarrhea. Chymase is a serine protease released by the mast cells and is highly expressed in patients with UC. However, its role in disease pathogenesis remains poorly understood. In mice, mast cell protease-4 (MCP-4) is considered as the functional homolog of human chymase, sharing similar enzymatic activity and biological roles.
METHODS: To investigate the role of MCP-4 in UC, we induced colitis in Mcpt-4-deficient (Mcpt-4∆Cre) and littermate control (Mcpt-4fl/fl) mice

UNLABELLED: Colon-targeted delivery of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) offers an effective strategy for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) while minimizing systemic side effects. However, conventional oral 5-ASA formulations suffer from premature drug release and poor colon specificity. To overcome these limitations, we developed a biodegradable, prebiotic, and immunomodulatory inulin nanoparticle (INP) platform enabling microbial enzyme-responsive and site-specific release of 5-ASA in the colon.
METHODS: INP was fabricated via a mild nanoprecipitation method and loaded with 5-ASA (5-ASA

The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiota plays a crucial role in host health and disease in dogs, but the knowledge regarding the mucosal associated microbiota along the GI tract is limited in dogs. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the phylogeny and predicted functional capacity of microbiota residing on the gut mucosa across five GI regions of healthy young adult and geriatric dogs fed different diets. Twelve weanling (8 weeks old) and 12 senior (11.1 years old) beagles were randomly assigned to be fed an animal product-based diet or plant product-based diet for 12 month

Donkeys, as single-stomach herbivores, have a complex and diverse microbial community in their digestive tracts. The intestinal bacterial community is crucial for maintaining intestinal homeostasis, as well as the host's overall nutrition and health. However, research on donkey gut microbes is relatively limited, particularly regarding the microbial colonization patterns in different intestinal segments of adult donkeys. Therefore, this study examined the abundance and function of microbiota across various sites of the intestinal tract (duodenum, jejunum, ileum, cecum, colon) and feces of heal

INTRODUCTION: Colonic manometry (CM) is a diagnostic procedure used to evaluate pediatric patients with refractory constipation, fecal incontinence, Hirschsprung disease, and pediatric intestinal pseudo-obstruction. Pan-colonic high-amplitude propagated contractions (HAPCs), measured by CM, reflect an intact neuromuscular function of the colon. Current guidelines recommend starting CM with fasting recording for 1-2 h, but no prior evaluation has determined the diagnostic yield of the fasting phase. We aimed to determine the utility of the fasting phase during CM studies.
METHODS: We evaluated

Lumbar splanchnic (LSN) and sacral pelvic (PN) nerves convey different mechanosensory information from the colon to the spinal cord. Here we determined whether these pathways also differ in their chemosensitivity and receptor expression. Using an in vitro mouse colon preparation, individual primary afferents were tested with selective P2X and transient receptor potential vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1) receptor ligands. Afferent cell bodies in thoracolumbar and lumbosacral dorsal root ganglia (DRG) were retrogradely labelled from the colon and analysed for P2X3- and TRPV1-like immunoreactivity (L

A 41-year-old male presented with a 10-year history of incidentally discovered left renal cystic lesions on routine examination. Preoperative contrast-enhanced CT and MRI demonstrated multiloculated cystic masses (10 × 8 cm and 10 × 5 cm) suggestive of hydatid disease, with renal scintigraphy showing preserved global function (GFR 87.8 mL/min). The patient underwent successful organ-preserving surgery featuring partial nephrectomy with cyst excision using combined electrocautery and ultrasonic dissection. Surgical management included meticulous adhesiolysis of descending colon/sigmoid colon at

Non-cystic fibrosis-related bronchiectasis is a chronic inflammatory lung disease, which is regarded as an "orphan" lung disease, with little research devoted to the study of this condition. Bronchiectasis results in impaired quality of life and mortality if left untreated. The tools available in the armamentarium for the management of bronchiectasis entail antibiotic therapy traditionally used to treat exacerbations, stratagems to improve mucociliary clearance, and avoidance of toxins. Macrolides have been known for the last two decades to have not only anti-bacterial effects but immunomodula

We have reviewed the results of 107 consecutive total abdominal colectomies performed at our institutions during the past 10 years. Indications for surgery were carcinoma of the colon (60), multiple polyps (nine), diverticular disease (31), and other conditions (seven). Seven (6.5%) were emergency operations. All patients had anastomosis of the terminal ileum into the lower rectum or distal sigmoid colon no more than 25 cm above the anus. Thirty days after surgery, two patients (1.8%) had died of complications of anastomotic leaks. Both were poor candidates for primary reanastomosis. Morbidity

The patient was a 70-year-old woman who was diagnosed with obstructive transverse colon cancer suspected of invading the abdominal wall by abdominal CT imaging. Since the preoperative electrocardiogram showed an ischemic change, echocardiography and coronary angiography were performed. We diagnosed chronic heart failure and angina pectoris because echocardiography showed low cardiac function(left ventricular ejection fraction; LVEF 37%)and coronary angiography indicated triple-vessel disease. We firstly performed coronary artery bypass graft surgery following self-expanding metallic stent plac

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is caused by a variety of pathogenic factors, including chronic recurrent inflammation of the ileum, rectum, and colon. Immune cells and adhesion molecules play an important role in the course of the disease, which is actually an autoimmune disease. During IBD, CD34 is involved in mediating the migration of a variety of immune cells (neutrophils, eosinophils, and mast cells) to the inflammatory site, and its interaction with various adhesion molecules is involved in the occurrence and development of IBD. Although the function of CD34 as a partial cell marker is
