BACKGROUND: Electronic health recording (EHR) is an essential advancement for healthcare systems in developing countries. The success of EHRs depends on timely modifications based on user feedback. This cross-sectional study assessed the impacts, barriers, and areas for improvement of the Electronic Information Management System (EIMS) across twenty-three sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics in Sri Lanka. METHODS: This study used stratified sampling including doctors, nurses, public health laboratory technicians (PHLTs), medical laboratory technicians (MLTs), public health inspectors (PH

OBJECTIVE: At the balanced intersection of human and machine adaptation is found the optimally functioning brain-computer interface (BCI). In this study, we report a novel experiment of BCI controlling a robotic quadcopter in three-dimensional (3D) physical space using noninvasive scalp electroencephalogram (EEG) in human subjects. We then quantify the performance of this system using metrics suitable for asynchronous BCI. Lastly, we examine the impact that the operation of a real world device has on subjects' control in comparison to a 2D virtual cursor task.
APPROACH: Five human subjects we

Nowadays, telemonitoring systems are increasingly used, due to the increasing of life expectancy and chronic diseases. Indeed, chronic diseases and disabilities due to advancing age are responsible for health care costs increasingly growing. Telemonitoring systems provide a low cost way to monitor patients and their needs in the comfort of their own homes. In first systems, the data were collected then sent directly to physicians to be interpreted. Nowadays, thanks to technological advancements, software and systems have been developed to process data, on a simple computer or even smartphone.

Large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models achieve notable performance in computer vision but require substantial computational resources, limiting their deployment on edge devices1,2. Optical neural networks (ONNs) promise reduced latency and energy consumption by making use of the inherent parallelism of light3. However, present ONNs struggle to scale and are confined to simple tasks, owing to the challenges of replicating exact algebraic operations of digital models using physical (analogue) systems. This work introduces a new paradigm that directly embeds core computer vision principl

BACKGROUND: Computer vision may aid in melanoma detection.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to compare melanoma diagnostic accuracy of computer algorithms to dermatologists using dermoscopic images.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using 100 randomly selected dermoscopic images (50 melanomas, 44 nevi, and 6 lentigines) from an international computer vision melanoma challenge dataset (n = 379), along with individual algorithm results from 25 teams. We used 5 methods (nonlearned and machine learning) to combine individual automated predictions into "fusion" algorithms. In a companion study, 8

INTRODUCTION: Lag screw cutout is one of the most commonly reported complications following intramedullary nail fixation of intertrochanteric femur fractures. However, its occurrence can be minimized by a well-positioned implant, with a short Tip-to-Apex Distance (TAD). Computer-assisted navigation systems provide surgeons with the ability to track screw placement in real-time. This could allow for improved lag screw placement and potentially reduce radiation exposure to the patient and surgeon.
METHODS: Between Oct 2014 and Jan 2016, patients with intertrochanteric femur fractures being trea

INTRODUCTION: Advances in the area of information technology have opened up new possibilities for the use of interactive media in the training of medical students. Classical instructional technologies, such as video, slides, audio cassettes and computer programs with a textbook orientation, have been merged into one multimedia computer system. The medical profession has been increasingly integrating computer-based applications which can be used, for example, for record keeping within a medical practice. The goal of this development is to provide access to all modes of information storage and r

Classification systems for Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) play an important role in guiding both surgical planning and conservative treatments. Traditional 2D classification systems, such as the Lenke, King and Lehnert-Schroth classifications, have been widely used for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis. However, with the growing understanding of the three-dimensional nature of scoliosis and advancements in 3D reconstruction technologies, 3D classification systems are gaining increasing attention. This paper reviews the current applications, advantages, and limitations of

One innovation currently influencing physical medicine and rehabilitation is brain-computer interface (BCI) technology. BCI systems used for motor control record neural activity associated with thoughts, perceptions, and motor intent; decode brain signals into commands for output devices; and perform the user's intended action through an output device. BCI systems used for sensory augmentation transduce environmental stimuli into neural signals interpretable by the central nervous system. Both types of systems have potential for reducing disability by facilitating a user's interaction with the

Tuberculosis, which primarily affects developing countries, remains a significant global health concern. Since the 2010s, the role of chest radiography has expanded in tuberculosis triage and screening beyond its traditional complementary role in the diagnosis of tuberculosis. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for tuberculosis detection on chest radiographs have recently made substantial progress in diagnostic performance, thanks to deep learning technologies. The current performance of CAD systems for tuberculosis has approximated that of human experts, presenting a potential solution to

Modern embedded systems have achieved relatively high processing power. They can be used for edge computing and computer vision, where data are collected and processed locally, without the need for network communication for decision-making and data analysis purposes. Face detection, face recognition, and pose detection algorithms can be executed with acceptable performance on embedded systems and are used for home security and monitoring. However, popular machine learning frameworks, such as MediaPipe, require relatively high usage of CPU while running, even when idle with no subject in the sc

Evaluation of sperm motility is well-established in farm animals for quickly selecting ejaculates for semen processing into insemination doses and for evaluating the quality of preserved semen. Likewise, sperm motility is a fundamental parameter used by spermatologists in basic and applied science. Motility is commonly assessed using computer-assisted semen analysis (CASA). Recent increases in computational power, as well as utilization of mobile CASA systems and open-source CASA programs, broaden the possibilities for motility evaluation. Despite this technological progress, the potential of

This study describes the development, evaluation and application of a computer vision and deep learning system capable of capturing sprinting and skeleton push start step characteristics and mass centre velocities (sled and athlete). Movement data were captured concurrently by a marker-based motion capture system and a custom markerless system. High levels of agreement were found between systems, particularly for spatial based variables (step length error 0.001 ± 0.012 m) while errors for temporal variables (ground contact time and flight time) were on average within ± 1.5 frames of the criter

For people suffering from severe paralysis, communication can be difficult or nearly impossible. Technology systems called brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are being developed to assist these people with communication by using their brain activity to control a computer without any muscle activity. To benefit the development of BCIs that employ neural activity related to speech, we investigated if neural activity patterns related to different articulator movements can be distinguished from each other. We recorded with electrocorticography (ECoG), the neural activity related to different articul

Functional electrical stimulation (FES) can restore volitional motion of patients with neurological injuries or diseases using electrical stimulation of nerves innervating the muscles to be controlled independently. The Flat interface nerve electrode (FINE) enables the selective control of different muscles at the same time. In addition, multiple contact electrode designs allow selective recording of the various signals within the cuff. However, motion control of neuromuscular skeletal systems using multi-contact electrodes is a challenging problem due to the complexities of the systems and th
