BACKGROUND: Previous epidemiological studies have investigated the association between allergic symptoms and cancer occurrence. However, the role of allergy in cancer has been elusive, especially for the female population.
METHODS: We examined the relationship between cancer prevalence and common allergic symptoms of rhinoconjunctivitis (RC) and wheezing (WZ) among NHANES III female participants.
RESULTS: Among 4600 people, 36.3% (n = 1669) did not have any allergic symptoms (NO), while 47.6% (n = 2188) reported RC, and 16.2% (n = 743), WZ. The proportion of cancer among NO groups was 5.43%

PURPOSE: To assess risk factors for progression following corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in eyes with keratoconus.
METHODS: Charts of patients who developed progression following conventional CXL treatment (Dresden protocol) were retrospectively evaluated in two centers (Center 1 and Center 2). 871 eyes of a total of 676 patients were analyzed. Progression was defined as > 1 diopter (D) increase in maximum keratometry (Kmax) readings compared to baseline.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory allergy, commonly manifesting as allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma, is a chronic progressive disease that frequently starts in childhood. Allergy immunotherapy (AIT) is the only causal treatment for respiratory allergy with the potential to modify the underlying cause of allergy and, ultimately, prevent disease progression. This analysis aimed to determine if AIT is received sufficiently early to halt the progression of allergic disease, by characterizing the burden and progression of disease in children prior to AIT initiation in real-life clinical practice.

The authors present a case of vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in 5 years old boy. Despite intensive topical pharmacological therapy (mast-cell stabilizers, antihistamines, steroids in acute exacerbations) unsatisfied reduction of the symptoms was observed and cornea became involved in the left eye (LE). BACKGROUND: We report our experience in removing giant papillae in cases with severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis using CO2 laser.
METHODS: Five cases with conjunctival giant papillae due to severe vernal keratoconjunctivitis were treated with CO2 laser. All cases were resistant to conventional treatment. In 4 eyes, there was also an associated corneal shield ulcer.
RESULTS: In all 5 cases the procedure was uneventful. Retreatment was performed in only 2 cases because of recurrence of the papillae. No intra- or postoperative complications were observed.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Ocular allergy is a common clinical disorder that includes dry eye syndrome in its differential diagnosis. While ocular allergy treatments have continued to evolve since the early 1990s when the new prescription topical agents became available, there have been no major advances in the treatment of dry eye syndrome other than changes in the chemical structures of various artificial tear formulations.
