INTRODUCTION: In multiple studies, involvement of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of methotrexate (MTX)-mediated liver damage has been confirmed. Use of many drugs has been examined experimentally in order to prevent or diminish oxidative stress. However, no study has yet examined the effects of ferulic acid (FA) on MTX-induced liver damage. This study aimed at evaluating the effects of FA on protection against liver damage induced by MTX in mice.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this the mice were divided into five groups in a random manner: I) control; II) MTX (20 mg/kg); III and IV) FA (50 a

Sodium ferulate (SF) is the sodium salt of ferulic acid which is an active ingredient of Radix Angelica Sinensis and Ligusticum chuanxiong hort. Here, we investigated SF inhibition in a rat model of myocardial hypertrophy induced by coarctation of the abdominal aorta. Following coarctation, rats were given SF (20, 40, and 80 mg/kg/day) for 25 consecutive days. We characterized myocardial hypertrophy using myocardial hypertrophic parameters, histopathology, and gene expression of atrial natriuretic factor (ANF) -a gene related to myocardial hypertrophy. We detected the levels of angiotensin II

BACKGROUND: Plants in arid environments can regulate the generation of specialized metabolites to enhance their adaptability. Roots serve as the first defense line, responding directly to drought situations; however, the knowledge regarding the molecular mechanisms of metabolite changes to drought in maize roots remain largely limited. Here, we employed RNA-seq and UPLC-MS/MS methods to examine changes in the root metabolome and transcriptome of maize seedlings subjected to moderate drought (MD) and severe drought (SD) conditions by controlling water supply.
RESULTS: Compared to the untreated

In response to the urgent need to control Coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), this study aims to explore potential anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents from natural sources. Moreover, cytokine immunological responses to the viral infection could lead to acute respiratory distress which is considered a critical and life-threatening complication associated with the infection. Therefore, the anti-viral and anti-inflammatory agents can be key to the management of patients with COVID-19. Four bioactive compounds, namely ferulic acid 1, rutin 2, gallic acid 3, and chlorogenic acid 4 were isolated from the leaves o

Ferulic acid (FA) from rice bran is known to possess strong antioxidant properties. Furthermore, its multifunctional properties, such as skin whitening, anti-glycation, and anti-inflammatory effects, have attracted attention. We undertook an exploratory study to examine whether FA might be associated with improvements in skin dullness. A single-blind study was conducted on 24 healthy women, in which a cream containing 1% FA was applied to one side of the face and a placebo cream was applied to the other side to verify the effects. To explore the molecular mechanism, RNA-seq was performed on HE

Ferulic acid (FA) is a natural phenolic compound that has been documented for its antioxidant properties and potential in managing hypertension. However, its use is limited due to poor solubility and permeability (BCS Class IV classification). To overcome this, nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) of FA were developed using the emulsification probe sonication technique, with formulation optimized through Box-Behnken design. The optimized FA-NLCs (F12) demonstrated a particle size of 103.4 nm, zeta potential of -43.6 mV, polydispersity index of 0.531, and entrapment efficiency of 88.9%. Key Fin

Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) is commonly occurring pathogen associated with nosocomial infections. Infections are difficult to treat because of their multidrug-resistant (MDR) nature and their tendency to form biofilms. Therefore, it is essential to find alternative medicinal approaches to treatment. In this regard, targeting an important protein for drug development can be an alternative approach. Sortase A (SrtA) is an important enzyme involved in anchoring cell surface-exposed proteins to the cell envelope. SrtA is present in Gram-positive bacteria which catalyses the attachment of s

In this study, it was aimed to determine the effect of sinapic acid (SNP), a polyphenol with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, on testicular damage caused by vancomycin (VCM), a widely used antibiotic against gram positive bacteria. A total of 35 male Sprague Dawley rats were used in the study, divided into five groups: control, VCM, SNP, VCM + SNP 10, and VCM + SNP 20. Following a week of oral administration, the rats were euthanized under sevoflurane anesthesia. While the VCM group had a significant increase in MDA levels, the SNP administration inhibited the incre

Phenolic acids can improve obesity-related and metabolic syndrome-related conditions including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). In this study, the effects of ferulic acid (FA) on the metabolic changes related to NAFLD were investigated in oleic acid (OA)-treated HepG2 cells and C57BL/6 mice fed a high fat diet (HFD). In vitro, FA (25 and 50 μg/mL) treatment significantly reduced cellular lipid accumulation with no obvious cytotoxicity, in-part mediated by the suppression of ERK1/2, JNK1/2/3, and HGMB1 expression. However, in vivo administration of FA (20 mg/kg bw·day) for 17 weeks le

BACKGROUND: Clinical and experimental studies support the therapeutic potential of Withania somnifera (WS) (L.) Dunal on anxiety disorders. This potential is attributable to components present in different plant extracts; however, the individual compound(s) endowed with specific anxiolytic effects and potential modulatory activity of the GABAA receptor complex (GABAAR) have remained unidentified until the recent isolation from a WS methanolic root extract of some GABAAR-active compounds, including the long alkyl-chain ferulic acid ester, docosanyl ferulate (DF).

Twenty-two Katahdin × Dorper ewe lambs (average weight = 23.5 ± 2.8 kg) were individually housed during a 40-d feeding study and then slaughtered to evaluate effects of free ferulic acid (FA; 0 and 250 mg/kg of feed) on oxidative status, feedlot growth, carcass and non-carcass traits, wholesale cut yields and meat quality under heat stress conditions. Overall feeding FA decreased protein oxidation without affecting oxidative stress index, while growth rate and feed efficiency increased only in the hottest period (i.e., 28 to 45 °C). The FA supplementation increased kidney-pelvic-heart and mese

Oxidative stress has been claimed a place in pathophysiology of depression; however, the details of the neurobiology of this condition remains incompletely understood. Recently, treatments employing antioxidants have been thoroughly researched. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic compound with antioxidant and antidepressant-like effects. Herein, we investigated the involvement of the antioxidant activity of chronic oral FA treatment in its antidepressant-like effect using the tail suspension test (TST) and the forced swimming test (FST) in mice. The modulation of antioxidant system in blood, hippo
