Ovarian cysts in postmenopausal women: preliminary results with transvaginal alcohol sclerosis. Work in progress.

Seven patients with a recurrent ovarian cyst after transvaginal needle aspiration underwent alcohol sclerosis of the cyst. The cysts had the appearance of simple cysts at ultrasound (US). Sclerosis, an outpatient procedure, was performed with a transvaginal approach under continuous endovaginal US guidance. After aspiration of the cyst contents, approximately two-thirds of the aspirated fluid was replaced with 100% alcohol that was left in place for 20 minutes and then aspirated. No complication was observed. Four cysts had not recurred at follow-up examinations performed 2, 5, 7, and 12 month

Management of ovarian lesions diagnosed during infancy.

PURPOSE: Prior studies of infant ovarian cysts have recommended intervention for those larger than 4 cm. We reviewed the natural history and features of those managed operatively versus nonoperatively. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed of ovarian lesions in children <1 year-old from 2000 to 2014. RESULTS: Forty patients were identified. Twenty-eight (70%) underwent operative management, while 12 (30%) were managed conservatively, including one undergoing aspiration. The mean age at surgery was 125 days. All but one patient (96%) had evidence of antenatal torsion intraoperatively o

Simple bone cyst recurred in adjacent areas: A case report.

Simple bone cyst is a pseudocyst that typically occurs in patients during their second and third decades of life. This benign entity is an empty or fluid-filled cavity that lacks a true epithelial lining. Simple bone cysts are often asymptomatic and are commonly found in mandibular body, predominantly in the posterior region. The treatment of simple bone cysts can be influenced by factors such as the patient's age, the size of the lesion, and the presence or absence of symptoms. In the case of a simple bone cyst in the mandible that is small and symptomless, a watchful waiting approach may be

An unusual site for hydatid cyst on ovary misdiagnosed as an ovarian cyst: a case report.

UNLABELLED: A hydatid cyst is a parasitic infection that can occur in multiple organs of the body, mostly in the liver. The ovary is one of the very rare locations for those cysts. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors report a case of a 43-year-old woman with a primary hydatid cyst, the patient presented with left lower quadrant abdominal pain for 2 months. Ultrasound of the abdomen showed evidence of a multivesicular, fluid-containing cystic lesion in the left adnexa. The mass was excised and a hysterectomy with total left salpingo-oophorectomy was performed. Histopathology confirmed it to be a hy

A rare case of a lingual mass in a neonate.

A large lingual cyst was noted on the 22-week antenatal ultrasound, which grew in proportion to the foetus on serial imaging. An elective c-section was performed in view of possible airway obstruction, and the neonate initially required oxygen to maintain saturations. Aged 1 month, the baby developed significant breastfeeding difficulties secondary to rapid cyst and secondary tongue enlargement, completely filling the oral cavity. Fifteen millilitres of fluid were aspirated in clinic, resulting in reduction of tongue size and immediate improvement in feeding. The patient subsequently underwent

Alcohol sclerosis for polycystic liver disease and obstructive jaundice: use of a nasobiliary catheter.

We report the use of a nasobiliary catheter in the management of a 55-yr-old female with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease who developed obstructive jaundice from a hepatic cyst. The patient presented with a 2-wk history of fatigue, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Physical examination was remarkable for tender hepatomegaly. Computerized tomography revealed multiple hepatic cysts and dilated intrahepatic biliary radicles. Endoscopic stent placement failed to relieve the obstruction. Computerized tomography guided percutaneous aspiration of the obstructing hepatic cyst

Bobble-head doll syndrome successfully treated with an endoscopic ventriculocystocisternostomy. Case report and review of the literature.

The bobble-head doll syndrome (BHDS) is characterized by a back-and-forth movement of the head with a frequency of 2 to 3 Hz, which increases during walking and excitement and decreases during concentration. The head movements are accompanied by macrocephaly, ocular disturbances, psychomotor retardation, and sometimes endocrine dysfunction. The BHDS is frequently associated with a suprasellar arachnoid cyst. The authors present the case of a 4-year-old patient with BHDS; an endoscopic cystoventriculostomy was performed by fenestrating a cyst in the suprasellar region. After wide fenestration o

The role of sonographically guided aspiration in the clinical management of ovarian cysts.

This study was undertaken to verify the role of fine-needle aspiration (FNA) followed by cytologic examination as a possible alternative to surgery in case of cystic pelvic masses. From January 1988 to March 1989, 204 patients with a proven cystic pelvic mass underwent FNA under sonographic guidance. In 20 cases the aspiration was performed transvaginally. Thirty-six patients were postmenopausal. In all cases the aspirated fluid was collected for cytologic evaluation. Other than one case of persistent hematuria, no complications occurred. The overall recurrence rate, verified 3 months from FNA

Fertility and viability rates of hydatid cysts in slaughtered animals in the Mazandaran Province, Northern Iran.

The aim of this study was to determine the fertility and viability of hydatid cysts in slaughtered sheep and cattle. Cysts were collected from the liver and lungs of 169 sheep and 171 cattle infected with Echinococcus granulosus when slaughtered in industrial abattoir in Sari, Iran, 2007-2008. Fertility was determined by the examination of cyst fluid for the presence of protoscoleces. The viability of the protoscoleces was assessed by staining with 0.1% aqueous eosin solution. The fertility rates of hepatic cyst of sheep and cattle were 47.1% and 1.4%, respectively and the fertility rates of p…

A 30% incidence of renal cysts with varying sizes and densities in biomedical research swine is not associated with renal dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Renal cystic disease arising from various etiologies results in fluid-filled cavities within the kidneys. Moreover, preexisting renal dysfunction has been shown to exacerbate multiple pathologies. While swine bred for biomedical research are often clinically inspected for illness/parasites, more advanced diagnostics may aid in uncovering underlying renal abnormalities. METHODS: Computed tomography was performed in 54 female prepubertal Yorkshire swine to characterize renal cysts; urine and blood chemistry, and histology of cysts were also performed. RESULTS: Digital reconstructio

A giant chylolymphatic cyst of the retroperitoneum: a case report.

Chylolymphatic cysts are an extremely rare variant of mesenteric cysts and account for 7.3% of all abdominal cysts. They can develop anywhere along the mesentery of the gastrointestinal tract and present in a wide range of symptoms. A 46-year-old male presented with mild abdominal pain and intermittent claudication in his right leg for the last 2 months and a history of a retroperitoneal resection of a simple abdominal cyst 5 years ago. Abdominal ultrasound and computerized tomography showed a fluid-filled cystic lesion measuring 17 × 11 × 10 cm in the right retroperitoneum. The cyst was surgi

Absence of brain involvement and factors related to positive serology in a prospective series of 61 cases with pulmonary hydatid disease.

A prospective series of 65 patients with surgically confirmed lung cystic hydatid disease was evaluated in terms of their radiologic characteristics, serologic response, and presence of cysts in other organs. Cysts were mostly single and located in lower lung lobes. Liver compromise was found in 34% of the patients. Despite a systematic search, no patient showed brain cysts in this series. Twelve patients had previous hydatid disease: six in the liver and eight in the lung (two had involvement of both organs in the past). Serology using bovine cyst fluid in an immunoblot assay was 85% sensitiv…

Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of a Renal Cyst Causing Unilateral Lameness in a Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos).

This report describes the diagnosis and treatment of a benign renal cyst in an adult, female golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) presented for unilateral leg lameness. A cyst at the cranial division of the left kidney was diagnosed by computed tomography and was suspected of compressing the lumbosacral nerve plexus, resulting in limb lameness. The renal cyst was incompletely excised because the cyst wall was closely adhered to the kidney parenchyma and local blood supply. Fluid analysis and surgical biopsy of the cyst and left kidney confirmed the diagnosis of a benign renal cyst. No evidence of

Small-molecule CFTR inhibitors slow cyst growth in polycystic kidney disease.

Cyst expansion in polycystic kidney disease (PKD) involves progressive fluid accumulation, which is believed to require chloride transport by the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein. Herein is reported that small-molecule CFTR inhibitors of the thiazolidinone and glycine hydrazide classes slow cyst expansion in in vitro and in vivo models of PKD. More than 30 CFTR inhibitor analogs were screened in an MDCK cell model, and near-complete suppression of cyst growth was found by tetrazolo-CFTR(inh)-172, a tetrazolo-derived thiazolidinone, and Ph-GlyH-101, a phenyl-de

Rapid expansion of a ventral arachnoid cyst after syringo-subarachnoid shunting in the thoracic spinal cord: case report.

BACKGROUND: Intradural spinal arachnoid cysts have rarely been reported in association with intramedullary cysts. These associated lesions most commonly occur in the thoracic spine. CASE DESCRIPTION: We reported an unusual balance of cerebrospinal fluid dynamics between an initially occult arachnoid cyst and syringomyelia. The arachnoid cyst was not allowed to express itself until the syrinx was decompressed with a syringo-subarachnoid shunt. CONCLUSION: Only one other report in the literature described a similar case; however, our case is the first to be confirmed by intraoperative ultrasou
