Deer Antler Uridine Regulates Glycolysis in Microglia via HSP90/HIF-1α to Improve Cognitive Impairment in Alzheimer's Disease Mice.

AIM: To investigate the role and mechanism of uridine (URI), an active component in deer antler, in improving cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease (AD) mice. METHOD: The APP/PS1 mouse model was used for AD. After URI gavage administration, cognitive behavioral changes in mice were detected using the Morris water maze, eight-arm maze, and novel object recognition tests. Levels of inflammatory cytokines and lactate, pyruvate in the cortex were measured. The proportions of IBA-1 and CD86 cells in tissues were detected, and the expression of key glycolysis proteins was examined. Network ph…

Multi-objective optimization framework for electric vehicle charging and discharging scheduling in distribution networks using the red deer algorithm.

This article addresses the optimization of the challenging electric vehicles (EVs) charging and discharging schedules in distribution networ … jectives. To tackle the optimization problem, a metaheuristic swarm intelligence algorithm, the Red Deer Algorithm (RDA), is utilized to determine the optimal EV charging and discharging timings. The efficiency of the proposed method on a IEEE 69-bus system is tested. The experiment simulates residential EV loads using two sets of different EVs; The fi …

ALGAL BLOOM CAUSES ACUTE TOXICITY AND MORTALITY IN SAMBAR DEER (RUSA UNICOLOR) AT WILDLIFE BREEDING PARK, JALLO-LAHORE, PAKISTAN.

Cyanobacteria toxicosis was diagnosed in an enclosure of sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) in Wildlife Breeding Park, Jallo-Zoo, Lahore, Pakistan. Microscopic examination of pond water and feces from inside of the deer enclosure revealed Microcystis aeruginosa. Clinical findings in seven sambar deer included muscle tremors, dysentery, melena, and enteritis. Necropsy findings revealed froth in trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles (indicative of pulmonary edema) in five of the seven deer. The liver was congested and firm in consistency, and its margins were round. Healed ulcers were found on the tongue a…

Pathologic Findings of Cranial Abscesses Involving the Pituitary Gland in Free-Ranging White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Pennsylvania.

Intracranial abscesses are a common cause of morbidity and mortality in neurologic free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). These infections are typically attributed to Trueperella pyogenes and occur most often in adult males with concurrent antler and skull infections. A subset of intracranial abscesses in white-tailed deer are localized to the pituitary gland, with previously described reports in five white-tailed deer. In this case series, five additional free-ranging white-tailed deer in Pennsylvania were diagnosed with pituitary abscesses at necropsy. Two cases were female…

Classical BSE dismissed as the cause of CWD in Norwegian red deer despite strain similarities between both prion agents.

The first case of CWD in a Norwegian red deer was detected by a routine ELISA test and confirmed by western blotting and immunohistochemistry in the brain stem of the animal. Two different western blotting tests were conducted independently in two different laboratories, showing that the red deer glycoprofile was different from the Norwegian CWD reindeer and CWD moose and from North American CWD. The isolate showed nevertheless features similar to the classical BSE (BSE-C) strain. Furthermore, BSE-C could not be excluded based on the PrPSc immunohistochemistry staining in the brainstem and the…

Case report: First report of potentially zoonotic Gongylonema pulchrum in a free-living roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Slovenia.

Adult female and male Gongylonema nematodes were found in the oesophagus of a free-living roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Slovenia during passive health surveillance of wildlife. The genus Gongylonema was determined by light microscopy based on the genus-specific cuticular bosses in the anterior part of the parasite. Molecular methods were used to confirm the species Gongylonema pulchrum, which has zoonotic potential. Although Gongylonema species are considered common and distributed worldwide, this is the first report of G. pulchrum in an animal on the territory of Slovenia and the first mo…

Vaccination of White-Tailed Deer with Mycobacterium bovis Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG): Effect of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis Infection.

In many parts of the world, bovine tuberculosis eradication efforts are hampered by wildlife reservoirs of Mycobacterium bovis, which serve as a constant source of M. bovis for nearby cattle. The human tuberculosis vaccine, M. bovis BCG has been investigated for use in several wildlife species, including deer. In the US, white-tailed deer in Michigan have been the source of infection for over 82 cattle herds since M. bovis was discovered in free-ranging deer in 1995. The efficacy of BCG may be influenced by many factors, including prior exposure or infection with non-tuberculous mycobacteria, …

Survey of Staphylococcus aureus carriage by free-living red deer (Cervus elaphus): Evidence of human and domestic animal lineages.

Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogen that can affect multiple host species. Evidence of transmission between humans and animals and among different animal species has been reported in recent years. In this study, we investigated 284 free-living red deer (Cervus elaphus) in the Central Italian Alps to assess the prevalence and molecular characteristics of S. aureus in nasal and intestinal samples in relation to host features and environmental factors. A prevalence of 90%, 26.2% and 10.7% of S. aureus was detected in nasal rectal swabs and faeces, respectively. Calves had a higher probability of …

Identification of Hypoderma actaeon (Diptera: Oestridae) in red deer (Cervus elaphus) from northern Spain: Microscopy study and molecular analysis.

Hypoderma spp. larvae were observed subcutaneously in the dorsal and lumbar regions of red deer (Cervus elaphus) hunted in the province of León (northwestern Spain) causing a myiasis. They were removed and initially classified by their size, shape, color, and location under the skin into the three larval stages that parasitize these animals. The morphological characteristics of the first and second-instar are described and from the features of the third-instar the species was identified as Hypoderma actaeon. To accurately identify this species, five isolates of genomic DNA from the third-insta…

Integrative taxonomic description of the chewing louse Tricholipeurus lipeuroides infesting Odocoileus virginianus veraecrucis white-tailed deer in Veracruz, Mexico.

Chewing lice (Phthiraptera: Amblycera, Ischnocera) represent a component of the ectoparasite fauna associated with large sized mammals as deers. However, the diversity of chewing louse species infesting deer remains to be fully characterized in the Neotropics. Little is known about the chewing lice infesting the extant fourteen subspecies of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in Mexico. Known to infest white-tailed deer (WTD) in Canada and the United States (U.S.), Tricholipeurus lipeuroides is a chewing louse species that was originally described in the nineteenth century infesting O.…

Prevalence and Genetic Characterization of Deer Tick Virus (Powassan Virus, Lineage II) in Ixodes scapularis Ticks Collected in Maine.

Deer tick virus (DTV) is a genetic variant of Powassan virus (POWV) that circulates in North America in an enzootic cycle involving the blacklegged or "deer tick," Ixodes scapularis, and small rodents such as the white-footed mouse. The number of reported human cases with neuroinvasive disease has increased substantially over the past few years, indicating that POWV may be of increasing public health importance. To this end, we sought to estimate POWV infection rates in questing I. scapularis collected from four health districts in Maine (York, Cumberland, Midcoast, and Central Maine). Infecti…

The Babesia divergens Asia Lineage Is Maintained through Enzootic Cycles between Ixodes persulcatus and Sika Deer in Hokkaido, Japan.

Parasites of the Babesiadivergens Asia lineage, which are closely related to B. divergens in Europe and Babesia sp. strain MO1 in the United States, were recently reported in sika deer (Cervus nippon) in eastern Japan. To identify the tick vector(s) for this parasite, we conducted a field survey in Hokkaido, Japan, where the infection rate in sika deer is the highest in the country. A specific PCR system which detects and discriminates between lineages within B. divergens and between those lineages and Babesia venatorum showed that Ixodes persulcatus (11/822), but not sympatric Ixodes ovatus (…

Evaluation of Western blot, ELISA and latex agglutination tests to detect Toxoplasma gondii serum antibodies in farmed red deer.

Abortion due to Toxoplasma gondii has been suspected in New Zealand farmed red deer. However, knowledge around the epidemiology and prevalence of T. gondii in farmed red deer is limited. The aim of this study was to firstly, assess the sensitivity and specificity of two commercially available assays, ELISA and latex agglutination test (LAT), for use in deer and secondly, to estimate the sero-prevalence of T. gondii in red deer. A total of 252 sera from rising 2-year-old and adult hinds from 17 New Zealand red deer herds at early and late pregnancy scanning and from known aborted and/or non-abo…

Acute Q fever infection in Thuringia, Germany, after burial of roe deer fawn cadavers (Capreolus capreolus): a case report.

We report on a case of a 48-year-old man who presented with acute Q fever infection after burying two fawn cadavers (Capreolus capreolus). Recent outbreaks of Q fever in Europe have been traced back to intensive goat breeding units, sheep flocks in the proximity of highly populated urban areas or to farmed deer. To our knowledge, this is the first case report describing Q fever infection in a human linked to roe deer as a source of infection.

Acid-base status and blood gas arterial values in free-ranging sika deer hinds immobilized with medetomidine and ketamine.

Ten free-ranging female sika deer (Cervus nippon) were captured to obtain the reference values for acid-base status and blood gas when immobilized with the combination of medetomidine and ketamine. The mean +/- SE of PaCO2, PaO2, and HCO3- were 58.1 +/- 6.1 mmHg, 58.8 +/- 6.4 mmHg, and 36.0 +/- 4.4 mmol/l, respectively. Although acidosis and alkalosis occurred in three and two animals, respectively, no serious conditions were observed. The blood values, however, suggest that some degree of hypoxemia and respiratory acidosis with metabolic alkalosis are developed. The trapped deer showed a sign…
