Cystic lesions in the jaws are frequently associated with impacted teeth, and include dentigerous cysts, odontogenic keratocysts, unicystic ameloblastoma and adenoid odontogenic tumours. The most common treatment modality is enucleation of cysts with removal of the impacted tooth. Marsupialisation is a more conservative treatment modality than enucleation and is considered the first-line treatment, especially in the initial management of benign cystic lesions during the mixed dentition period. Depending on the size of the lesion, the position of the impacted tooth and the available space, the

OBJECTIVE: Describe the surgical repositioning of the premaxilla using an innovative minimally invasive endonasal approach and secondary bone graft at the same time. We want to emphasize the importance of virtual surgical planning in this technique.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 6 patients with bilateral complete cleft lip and palate underwent a surgical repositioning of the premaxilla. Virtual surgical planning was performed in all cases. The ages varied between 8 and 12 years and all were male. Five patients were in the mixed dentition phase and 1 patient was in the definitive phase. Thr

Humans' prolonged somatic development and life history are unique among primates, yet their evolutionary origins remain unclear. Dental development has been used as a proxy to reconstruct life history evolution in the hominin clade and indicates a recent emergence of the human developmental pattern. Here, we analyse tooth formation and eruption in two developing dentitions of Homo naledi, a late-surviving, morphologically mosaic hominin species. Deciduous dental development is more similar to humans than to chimpanzees, probably reflecting hominin symplesiomorphy rather than bearing life histo

The prevalence of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is steadily increasing among American children. The dental needs of these patients are significant. This study evaluated the oral health of forty children being treated for HIV-infection at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Eight of twenty-two patients in primary dentition (36 percent) had baby bottle tooth decay (BBTD). These cases required extensive dental restoration usually under general anesthesia. Tooth development was delayed in 31 percent of patients. Candidiasis was the most common soft tissue abnormality, found in 35

Ankylosed primary molars are relatively common during the mixed dentition period; however, ankylosis does not always coincide with infraocclusion. This systematic review assessed the clinical evidence regarding ankylosis of primary molars, including its etiology, diagnosis, and management, and discussed whether infraocclusion is primarily caused by ankylosis or instead reflects a broader disturbance of tooth eruption. A literature search was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines across three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to validate a three-dimensional (3D) printed model to provide training for supernumerary teeth (SNTs) extraction.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each of the 30 participants, grouped as experienced and without experience, conducted two identically simulated surgeries on a 3D-printed replica of human mixed dentition with a SNT. The surgery time, area of bony window and volume of removed material were measured; subsequently, responses to a five-item questionnaire were recorded. The collected data were statistically analysed.
RESULTS: The surgery time was 228.37 ± 141.53 s

Alveolar cleft is a tornado-shaped bone defect in the maxillary arch. The treatment goals for alveolar cleft are stabilization and provision of bone continuity to the maxillary arch, permitting support for tooth eruption, eliminating oronasal fistulas, providing an improved esthetic result, and improving speech. Treatment protocols vary in terms of the operative time, surgical techniques, and graft materials. Early approaches including boneless bone grafting (gingivoperiosteoplasty) and primary bone graft fell into disfavor because they impaired facial growth, and they remain controversial. Se

In our previous study, we concluded normal subjects did not present an abnormal morphology of condyle, while 30% of stomatognathic dysfunction patients revealed abnormality, and especially about 20% presented atrophy. In this study, we selected 146 patients with stomatognathic dysfunction and analysed patients with atrophy in condyle comparing patients without atrophy. We obtained following results. 1. 37 patients (25%) with dysfunction showed atrophy in condyle. Among them, 15 patients showed bilateral atrophy, and 22 showed unilaterally. 2. Among 22 patients with unilateral atrophy in condyl

BACKGROUND: Multimodal large language models (LLMs) have potential for medical image analysis, yet their reliability for pediatric panoramic radiographs remains uncertain.
AIM: This study evaluated two multimodal LLMs (OpenAI o1, Claude 3.5 Sonnet) for detecting and counting teeth (including tooth germs) on pediatric panoramic radiographs.
DESIGN: Eighty-seven pediatric panoramic radiographs from an open-source data set were analyzed. Two pediatric dentists annotated the presence or absence of each potential tooth position. Each image was processed five times by the LLMs using identical prom

Autologous iliac crest bone is used to close the residual alveolar bone defect in cleft palate patients during late mixed dentition. Surgery involves physical and anaesthesiologic risks, long-time hospitalization, high costs and not always good results (15% failure rate). Alternatives to iliac crest bone grafting are going to be evaluated: synthetic, xenograft and allograft matrices combined with platelet-rich plasma or recombined bone morphogenic proteins for osteoinductivity are commercially available. These alternatives have not yet been determined to be equivalent to the previous treatment

A longitudinal growth study of the craniofacial skeleton in 52 (19 males, 33 females) Danish individuals with cleft palates was performed. Thirty (13 males, 17 females) had clefts of the soft palate only or clefts extending into the posterior third of the hard palate. Twenty-two (6 males, 16 females) had more extensive clefts including up to two-thirds of the hard palate. The cleft was closed with a pushback operation at 22 months of age. Orthodontic treatment was included in the early mixed dentition. Lateral cephalometries were obtained at 5, 8, 12, 16, and 21 years of age. Twenty-four varia

Specimens obtained from 176 eight- to nineteen-year-old subjects were cultured for oral protozoa. Of the given series, 25 subjects (14.2%) had in their mouth only E. gingivalis, 5 (2.9%) had a mixed invasion of E. gingivalis and T. tenax, and 2 subjects (1.1%) had only T. tenax. A total of 32 subjects (18.2%) were infested by oral protozoa. The following conclusions were made: oral protozoa occur also in children and teenagers with a cured or intact dentition; their occurrence rate was higher in 11- to 19-year-old subjects than in the lower age groups; both protozoa can occur simultaneously; t

INTRODUCTION: General well-being of an individual, particularly oral health, depends on the maintenance of optimal oral hygiene. Evidence-based research has established the role of plaque biofilm as an etiologic factor that increases the risk of developing oral diseases such as dental caries and gingival and periodontal diseases. Brushing with either manual or mechanical toothbrushes is most commonly practiced for the removal of plaque, but its efficiency is limited to surfaces it can access, i.e., facial, lingual, and occlusal surfaces of the teeth. During the mixed dentition period, there is

This case report presents the clinical features and periodontal findings in a patient with a horizontally impacted maxillary central incisor that had been exposed and aligned after a closed-eruption surgical technique. By combining 3 treatment stages-maxillary expansion, crown exposure surgery, and induced eruption-the horizontally impacted incisor was successfully moved into proper position. The patient finished treatment with a normal and stable occlusion between the maxillary and mandibular arches, and an adequate width of attached gingiva, even in the area surrounding the crown. The 5-year
