Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory skin disease. Its main features are eczematous skin lesions with a typical distribution and severe pruritus. Allergens, skin irritants, systemic or local infections, environmental pollutants and hormonal changes have a role in the pathophysiology of AD. A further important trigger factor for both intrinsic and extrinsic AD is emotional stress. Recently published observations point to direct psychoneuroimmunological and -endocrinological mechanisms: Psychological stress causes a transient increase of peripheral blood eosinophil count an…

OBJECTIVES: Both cannabinoids and psychoactive substances from the group of stimulants can have a significant effect on the induction, course and treatment of severe mental illness. They also can be treated as self-medication. Many patients feel subjective benefits of using psychoactive substances in the areas of social competence, to cope with side effects of neuroleptics, stress accompanying mental illness or to control its symptoms. Our research tries to explain the causes of taking psychoactive substances by patients with schizophrenia.
METHODS: A total of 50 schizophrenia patients using

BACKGROUND: Patch testing with the shoe series may be useful for the diagnosis of shoe contact dermatitis.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to verify the usefulness of the shoe series and the association of fungal infection with positive results in the shoe series.
METHODS: A total of 140 patients with suspected shoe contact dermatitis underwent patch testing with the standard series and shoe series; 41 underwent mycologic examination.
RESULTS: Positive results in the shoe series were noted in 58 patients (41.4%). The most common allergens were potassium dichromate (27.2%), nickel sulfat…

A clinicopathological study of exfoliative dermatitis involving 25 fresh cases was carried out. Males were predominantly affected with a peak incidence between 21-30 years. Pruritus, shivering, erythema and scaling were the common clinical manifestations. Psoriasis and eczema were the most common aetiological factors and the histopathological findings were correlating with the same.

The prevention of skin diseases is accepted as an important part of occupational dermatology. Irritant dermatitis in particular, is a skin disease which can be avoided by preventional measures. Hence, an early introduction of trainees to preventional measures seems to be necessary to avoid bad habits which then become a matter of routine. The role of the dermatologist is not only the identification of individuals with a higher risk for developing irritant dermatitis, he should also inform his patients about the relevant irritants in their occupation (or of irritants in the household or leisure…

A review of the literature of reported cases of contact dermatitis to a variety of natural herbal extracts is Presented. Natural extracts are commonly used ingredients in many cosmetic preparations and homeopathic remedies. Although the term natural botanical extracts inherently purports to have beneficial and benign properties, these extracts can cause adverse reactions in individuals. As such, dermatologists should be cognizant of these agents as possible sources of allergenicity in patients presenting with contact dermatitis.

Dermatitis herpetiformis and coeliac disease are gluten sensitive diseases, which have common immunopathological and genetic mechanisms. Neuropsychiatric complications have been reported in up to 26% of patients with coeliac disease. This is probably an overestimate, because of the chance associations with some common neurological conditions such as epilepsy. The pathogenesis is speculative but it has been postulated that gluten is neurotoxic possibly via immune mechanisms. The frequency of neurological dysfunction in patients with dermatitis herpetiformis has not been characterised. Patients …

Contact hypersensitivity (CHS) in hand dermatitis (HD) was studied by patch testing (PT) 105 consecutive adult HD patients and 361 cases of suspected non-hand allergic contact dermatitis (NHD). The suspected offending agents were also investigated by a questionnaire. Age and sex distribution was no different between the 2 groups. The total positivity rate of PT in the HD group was much lower than in the control group (46.7% versus 63.2%, p < 0.01, chi2-test). The most common allergens in HD were rubber mix(17.1%), p-phenylenediamine (PPD) (14.3%), fragrance mix (9.5%), nickel (9.5%), colophoni…

Otomycosis is a chronic or subacute fungal infection of external ear accounting to 5 to 20% of external ear infection worldwide. Literature has suggested multiple local and environmental host factors associated with otomycosis, but their strength of association is not well established. We did this review to analyse otomycosis with respect to it's various common predisposing factors. Human studies reporting ototopical antibiotics with or without steroids as predisposing factors for otomycosis, or pooled data together with other predisposing factors were included. MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, the IS

Contact dermatitis or eczema is a polymorphic inflammation of the skin. It occurs at the site of contact with irritating or antigenic substances. In the acute phase there is occurrence of itching erythema, papules, and vesicles, whereas in the chronic phase there is dryness, hyperkeratosis, and sometimes fissures. Contact dermatitis can be divided into irritant and allergic types. Allergic contact dermatitis is a type-IV T-cell-mediated reaction occurring in a sensitized individual after contact with the antigen/allergen. Such antigens are usually low molecular weight substances (MW approximat…

A case of allergic contact dermatitis to cinchocaine is presented to highlight the confusion regarding the classification of, and cross-reactivity between, topical anaesthetic agents and the inadequacy of the use of benzocaine as a single screening agent for topical anaesthetic contact allergy. Our patient presented with a 10-day history of acute perianal dermatitis. Allergic contact dermatitis to Proctosedyl ointment, which was applied for 3 weeks prior, was suspected. On patch testing, he reacted to cinchocaine, a constituent of Proctosedyl ointment, and to the actual product, but had no rea…

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a common polyaethiological chronic disease affecting mainly the skin of face and scalp. The paper informs about aetiopathogenetic factors and clinical signs of SD. It review the contemporary methods of both external and internal treatments. Topical antimycotic treatment focused on Pityrosporum ovale, which could be the main causative agent, is considered to be the most important approach.

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in dentistry may affect dentists and orthodontists, technicians, nurses and patients. Changes to dental practice in recent years have altered the reported frequencies of allergens causing ACD in both dental personnel and patients. Allergic contact dermatitis to medicaments, metals and glutaraldehyde were previously common allergens in dentistry; however, widespread adoption of rubber gloves by staff has resulted in a significant increase in ACD to glove allergens in both dental staff and their patients, while affording protection against the traditional allerg…
