Pharyngeal dimensional changes in class II malocclusion treatment when using Forsus® or intermaxillary elastics - An exploratory study.

OBJECTIVE: Pharyngeal airway obstruction can facilitate some forms of sleep disorder breathing (SDB) in susceptible children, especially in those having class II malocclusion. Changes in the anatomic areas surrounding the pharyngeal region during orthodontic treatment could hypothetically impact the pharyngeal airway dimensions. Management of a class II malocclusion on a growing individual with either intermaxillary elastics or different removable or fixed class II appliance designs have been proposed over the last century. The objective of this retrospective exploratory cohort study is to inv

Selenium and arsenic in biology: their chemical forms and biological functions.

Based on the recent development of analytical methods, sensitive systems for the analysis and speciation of selenium and arsenic have been established. A palladium addition technique was developed for the accurate determination of selenium in biological samples using graphite furnace atomic absorption analysis. For the speciation of the elements, combined methods of HPLC either with ICP-AES or with ICP-MS were found to work well. These systems were applied to the elucidation of the chemical form of the elements in natural samples. Some chemical properties of the selenium-mercury complex in dol

Lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme patterns in cetaceans.

Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzyme activity was analyzed in cetaceans. Animals that were treated by i.m. injection and others that received azole therapy had distinctly different LDH isoenzyme profiles. A third distinctive pattern was occasionally observed in clinically normal animals with elevations in total transaminase and LDH activity levels. DH isoenzyme activity patterns were not affected by mild or moderate hemolysis, refrigeration after 24 hr, or freezing for 24 hr with subsequent thawing. However, severe hemolysis produced artifactual changes similar to those observed in indi

Therapeutic dose prediction using score-based diffusion model for pretreatment patient-specific quality assurance.

OBJECTIVES: Implementing pre-treatment patient-specific quality assurance (prePSQA) for cancer patients is a necessary but time-consuming task, imposing a significant workload on medical physicists. Currently, the prediction methods used for prePSQA fall under the category of supervised learning, limiting their generalization ability and resulting in poor performance on new data. In the context of this work, the limitation of traditional supervised models was broken by proposing a conditional generation method utilizing unsupervised diffusion model. METHODS: A conditional generation method ba

Integrative taxonomy of anisakid nematodes in stranded cetaceans from Brazilian waters: an update on parasite's hosts and geographical records.

Anisakidae are represented mainly by species of Anisakis Dujardin, 1845, Pseudoterranova Krabbe, 1878, and Contracaecum Railliet and Henry, 1913. Integrative taxonomy, based on morphological and genetic approaches, can provide a precise identification of species, increasing the knowledge of their systematics, biology, and evolution. In this study, integrative taxonomy was applied in order to identify, at generic and/or specific taxonomic level, 245 anisakids from 63 cetaceans of 12 different species, which stranded in the Brazilian coast. Parasites from nine hosts were preserved by freezing an

[Problems in mass screening program for prostatic diseases].

We developed transrectal ultrasonotomography for practical use in 1967 and started a model trial mass screening program for prostatic diseases with the method in 1975. A mobile unit "Dolphin" for mass screening, in which two sets of special chair-type scanner for the method was loaded, was developed successfully in 1980. Up to March, 1983, 2394 males over the age of 55 were submitted to the primary study. Among them, 12 cases (0.5%) of prostatic cancer (PC) and 755 cases (31.5%) of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) were finally detected in the secondary study. Thus the prevalence of BPH was s

Quantifying micro- and nanoplastics in blood, urine, and soft tissues using optimized cascaded microfiltration and pyrolysis-GC/MS for exposomic investigations.

Microplastics (1 μm-5 mm) and nanoplastics (<1 μm) arise from the breakdown of larger plastic materials through thermal, photochemical, and mechanical degradation. Due to the wide use and haphazard disposal of plastic wastes, micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) are ubiquitously detected in air, water, soil, and food, which leads to growing concern about chronic exposure and potential health impacts. MNPs have been detected across trophic levels and in more than 1000 species, indicating their extensive bioaccumulation. Recent studies have also detected MNPs in multiple human tissues and bodily flui

Swimming Anatomy and Lower Back Injuries in Competitive Swimmers: A Narrative Review.

CONTEXT: Competitive swimmers are at high risk of overuse musculoskeletal injuries due to their high training volumes. Spine injuries are the second most common musculoskeletal injury in swimmers and are often a result of the combination of improper technique, high loads on the spine in strokes that require hyperextension, and repetitive overuse leading to fatigue of the supporting trunk muscles. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current evidence regarding swimming biomechanics, stroke techniques, and common injuries in the lumbar spine to promote a discussion on the prevention an

Decoding non-human mammalian adaptive signatures of 2.3.4.4b H5N1 to assess its human adaptive potential.

The 2.3.4.4b clade highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 infected diverse non-human mammalian species, gained mammal-to-mammal transmission potential, and caused sporadic human infections. However, whether non-human mammals enable the human adaptation of 2.3.4.4b H5N1 to establish human infections is unclear. Gain-of-function research restrictions may hinder the assessment of 2.3.4.4b H5N1 human adaptations. Here, we tracked the evolution of 2.3.4.4b H5N1 that infected non-human mammals and evaluated their ability to gain human adaptations. The non-human mammal 2.3.4.4b H5N1 partly acquired c

Pantoea agglomerans: a mysterious bacterium of evil and good. Part III. Deleterious effects: infections of humans, animals and plants.

Pantoea agglomerans, a bacterium associated with plants, is not an obligate infectious agent in humans. However, it could be a cause of opportunistic human infections, mostly by wound infection with plant material, or as a hospital-acquired infection, mostly in immunocompromised individuals. Wound infection with P. agglomerans usually follow piercing or laceration of skin with a plant thorn, wooden splinter or other plant material and subsequent inoculation of the plant-residing bacteria, mostly during performing of agricultural occupations and gardening, or children playing. Septic arthritis

Effects of modified twin block appliance in growing Class II high angle cases: A cephalometric study.

BACKGROUND: Class II malocclusions represent anteroposterior dysplasia usually resulting from mandibular retrusion. Along with a retropositioned mandible, it can be associated with either upward or backward jaw rotation. High angle cases are often associated with a short ramal height, steeper mandibular plane, and large gonial angle. Twin block is a commonly used myofunctional appliance that incorporates bite planes that direct the occlusal forces in a more favorable direction for correction of the retrognathic mandible. We aimed to evaluate skeletal, dental, and soft tissue changes following
