A revised estimate of the economic impact of fetal alcohol syndrome.

A revised estimate of the national economic impact of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)-related abnormalities was conducted. The present evaluation included "corrections" for background rates of low birth weight, and costs normally incurred for housing and food regardless of whether an individual requires institutionalization or not. Additional anomalies were included along with hospital costs provided for in diagnostic-related groups. The current estimate for annual costs related to FAS is $249.7 million, which is about $80 million less than our previous estimate. This estimate is lower due to a s

Economic evaluation of neonatal screening for congenital dislocation of the hip.

A study was undertaken to determine the cost benefit of neonatal screening for dislocatable and subluxable hips. As a follow-up to retrospective and prospective studies that established the safety and efficacy of early treatment to the newborn, this study discusses the direct and significant economic benefit of a neonatal hip screening program to the participating institutions. British Columbia's Grace and Children's Hospitals experienced an economic benefit of $15,143.71 (Canadian) per 1,000 infants screened.

Economic and public health considerations of congenital toxoplasmosis in lambs.

Congenital toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in a flock of Hampshire sheep in South Dakota. The 80 ewes produced 144 lambs, 30 of which were born dead; toxoplasmosis was diagnosed in 11 of the dead lambs. The remaining 114 lambs grew normally, but 68 (40.3%) had agglutinating Toxoplasma gondii antibodies. Modified agglutination test T gondii antibody titers for 114 lambs were: less than 100 (n = 46), 64 (n = 2), 256 (n = 1), 1,024 (n = 12), and greater than or equal to 4,096 (n = 53). Tissues of 8 seropositive lambs were bioassayed for T gondii tissue cysts. Toxoplasma gondii was isolated from the t

Economic considerations in technology assessment: the case of genetic disease.

This paper describes economic issues pertinent to health care technology assessment. Of interest are the allocation of resources between health and other sectors of the economy, between alternative services within the health sectors, and the costs of producing the services that are selected. These issues are discussed and then illustrated by reference to a specific area of health care technology: screening for and intervention against genetic diseases. It is concluded that investments in screening programs for Tay Sachs disease and Down Syndrome are allocatively efficient. Indications are that

Bone marrow transplantation: economic, ethical, and social issues.

Bone marrow transplantation is a useful model for the controversies surrounding medical technologies that involve high cost, mortality, and complications. This essay first delineates the economic circumstances of bone marrow transplantation, comparing it with other organ transplantations. Although children represent a significant proportion of bone marrow transplantation patients, little research has focused on the economic impact for this population. Next, the financial, social, and ethical motivations and controversies that surround bone marrow transplantation are explored, along with curren

The social and economic costs of alcohol abuse in Minnesota, 1983.

Alcohol abuse in the State of Minnesota has an impact on health, health care resources, and the economy. Alcohol abuse was related to 3.3 per cent (1,150) of deaths in Minnesota in 1983; of these, almost one-third were the result of fatal injuries. Alcohol abuse contributed to 12 per cent (33,909) of all years of potential life lost, two-thirds of which were secondary to injury. The estimated cost of alcohol abuse ranged from $1.4 billion to $2.1 billion, representing from 2.8 per cent to 4.3 per cent of all personal income of Minnesotans, from 32 per cent to 50 per cent of State expenditures,

Economic aspects of an epidemic of haemorrhagic conjunctivitis in a rural community.

The estimated economic loss due to an epidemic of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis in 1981 in a rural community of Goa studied by house-to-house survey of 7230 families is reported. Thirty-five per cent of families were affected and in 62% of these families more than three persons developed conjunctivitis. The affected were forced to be absent from work resulting in a reduction of the work force (loss of 7735 man days) and loss of income (Rs 1,33,300). The type of treatment followed and estimates of treatment cost are described. The economic consequences to the country of this widespread epid

Socio-economic problems related to animal trypanosomiasis in Africa.

Animal trypanosomiasis is one of the major constraints of rural development in Africa. If trypanosomiasis did not exist in these areas, it is estimated that some regions could carry 3-5 times more livestock. Chemotherapy and chemoprophylaxis are old methods used to tackle the problem and are still valuable, provided the number of interventions is limited. Tse-tse fly control is a very useful tool to combat trypanosomiasis but expensive. The sterile male release technique is not economically feasible on a wide scale. Immunization or vaccination is not yet available. Trypanotolerance is a biolog

Methods to evaluate nutritional and economic implications of Ascaris infection.

Ascaris infection has important economic implications for human populations, due to its negative effects on growth of undernourished children and its less common role in causing intestinal obstruction. The deleterious effects of Ascaris infection on growth of undernourished children have been demonstrated in studies conducted in India, Kenya and Tanzania; deworming has resulted in improved weight gains of 20-35% compared with uninfected children. However other studies in Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Guatemala have not found statistically significant improvements in growth of children after treatme

Forfeiture of properties in respect of economic offences: the Indian experience.

India has on its statute book a number of enactments providing for seizure and forfeiture or confiscation of illegally acquired property. The Smugglers and Foreign Exchange Manipulators (Forfeiture of Property) Act, 1976, provides for forfeiture of both movable and immovable property illegally acquired by smugglers and foreign exchange manipulators and their relatives and associates. The Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act, 1974, contains provisions for the detention of certain persons to prevent them from undertaking certain prejudicial activities. An economic appraisal of the benefits of screening for open spina bifida.

Appraisal of the costs and benefits of public sector programmes is an essential part of planning the optimal allocation of society's resources. This paper reports a study of the potential benefits to be derived if the UK National Health Services (NHS) were to introduce a mass-screening programme for the prenatal detection of fetuses affected by open spina bifida. These benefits are compared with the costs of a screening programme as estimated in the Report [1] by the Working Group on Screening for Neural Tube Defects of the Department of Health and Social Security (DHSS), A satisfactory screen

Clinical, biochemical, radiographic, epidemiologic, and economic features of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a clinical syndrome characterized by low bone mass and fracture, primarily of vertebrae, hip, and distal forearm. Many factors play a role in the pathogenesis of the final clinical event, the fracture. In some patients an initial deficiency or rapid loss of trabecular bone may result in vertebral collapse. In others, loss of cortical bone may result in hip fracture. Fracture itself may occur not only because of low bone mass but also because of other factors intrinsic to bone, such as accumulation of microdamage, or extrinsic to bone, such as poor coordination or frequency of t

Economic consequences of pelvic inflammatory disease in the United States.

Pelvic inflammatory disease is the most common serious complication of sexually transmitted infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. Initial episodes of sexually transmitted acute PID occur most frequently in the 20 to 24 year age group, while sequelae such as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic PID are most common among 25- to 34-year-old women. The apparent chronicity of the disease process suggests that the epidemic of sexually transmitted disease, which began in the mid-1960s, could be followed by an epidemic of PID and its sequelae. More than 850,000 e
