Effect of Senokot on rat intestinal electrolyte transport. Evidence of Ca++ dependence.

The mechanism of action of Senokot, a widely used laxative, has not been established. Senokot was given orally to rats 8-14 h before intestinal water and electrolyte transport were studied. Senokot significantly decreased colonic and jejunal water absorption measured in vivo by the single-pass perfusion technique. The Senokot changes were not associated with changes in jejunal or colonic histology or adenylate cyclase activity or colonic cyclic adenosine monophosphate content. Senokot also altered active electrolyte transport in rat descending colon as measured by the Ussing chamber-voltage cl

Stimulation by human calcitonin of electrolyte transport in distal tubules of rat kidney.

The effects of human calcitonin (HCT) on the distal tubule were investigated by micropuncture in hormone-deprived rats, i.e. in the absence of parathyroid hormone, antidiuretic hormone and glucagon, which might have masked these effects. Two groups of rats were studied: hormone-deprived and hormone-deprive + HCT, infused at 1.0 mU/min X 100 g.b.w. In the urine, HCT markedly reduced Ca and Mg excretion whereas excretion of water, Na and K was not significantly affected. Along the distal tubule, HCT strongly enhanced Na, Cl, Mg, Ca and total solute reabsorption, decreased K secretion but did not

Acid-base and electrolyte values in dogs with acute gastric dilatation-volvulus.

Twenty dogs with acute gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) and 37 clinically normal dogs had arterial blood drawn for analysis of pH and blood gases. There was no statistically significant difference between values from the 2 groups. By calculation of the anion gap and by assessing arterial bicarbonate concentration, it appeared there were concomitant and offsetting factors, resulting in normal values for pH, blood gases, and anion gap in dogs with GDV. The results obtained indicated that sodium bicarbonate therapy should not be used in dogs with GDV.

Effect of acute metabolic alkalosis and acidosis on intestinal electrolyte transport in vivo.

The effects of acute metabolic alkalosis and acidosis on intestinal electrolyte transport were studied in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Animals were made alkalotic or acidotic by gavage feeding of 1 M solutions of NaCl (pH = 7.42), NaHCO3 (pH = 7.52), NH4Cl (pH = 7.18), or 0.75 M (NH4)2SO4 (pH = 7.21). After 1-3 h, animals were anesthetized and prepared for in vivo perfusion of the jejunum, ileum, and colon. The jejunum exhibited increased net potassium absorption in alkalosis and decreased potassium absorption in acidosis. In the ileum, net sodium absorption and potassium secretion were decrease

[Mineral content of various organs in experimentally induced water-electrolyte imbalance].

Experimentally induced disorders of mineral metabolism are caused in rats in order to examine differences of electrolyte concentrations in several organs (heart muscle, skeletal muscle, liver, brain). Specimens are taken immediately after death or 24 hours after death. Water overload causes pointed deviations in mineral content of tissue in relation to the control group, deficiency of water results in only minimal changes. Hypotonic hydration increases the water content of skeletal muscle, the "cationic osmolality" is decreased in all organs. Overload with hypertonic solutions decreases water

Total body potassium and serum electrolyte concentrations in protein energy malnutrition.

The total body potassium (TBK) and serum electrolyte concentrations of malnourished children in Cape Town are similar to those in Jamaica. The TBK is almost always low and hyponatraemia is common, but there was no relationship between the TBK and serum Na and K concentrations. These abnormalities, particularly a very low TBK, appear to influence the prognosis. The expression of the observed TBK as a percentage of the expected value for a normal child, of the same weight and height, appears to be a useful index of the severity of the total body potassium deficit.

Metabolic cooperative control of electrolyte levels by adenosine triphosphate in the frog muscle.

This study examines the effects of metabolic inhibitors on the content of cellular K, Na, and adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP and K are seen to fall in the inhibited tissues. The ATP content is correlated with the K content. The role of ATP is examined according to a recent biophysical approach. It is suggested that ATP may control the electrolyte levels by inducing conformational changes in the cytoplasmic proteins.
