Activities of thiamin pyrophosphokinase (TPK EC 2.7.6.2) and thiamin pyrophosphatase (TPPase EC 3.6.1.6) were studied in liver homogenate supernatants obtained from mouse (female, body weight of 21-23 g) in dynamics of B1 avitaminosis. As compared with controls distinct deficiency of thiamin led a decrease in coenzyme thiamin diphosphate (TPP) down to 15% as well as of transketolase activity (TPP-dependent enzyme) down to 35%, especially during the terminal stage of the avitaminosis; the process was accompanied by cyclic alterations in activity of TPK and TPPase. Serum activities of ACE were investigated in 40 patients with dermatological disease and in nine patients with sarcoidosis. The method of Cushman and Cheung, modified according to Lieberman, was used. Both sarcoidosis patients and patients with dermatological diseases showed marked elevations of ACE-activity. The increase in ACE-activity might result from inflammation and immunological events.

The correlation between S-angiotensin-converting enzyme (SACE) and disease activity was examined in 185 observation periods in 85 untreated sarcoidosis patients. An agreement between SACE and chest roentgenographic changes was found in 42% of the observations, although less frequently in patients with erythema nodosum. The most convenient interval between enzyme measurements seems to be 3 months in patients with active disease, but more frequent check-ups are advised in patients with erythema nodosum. A comparative biochemical study of the sialocontaining glycoproteids metabolism and the activity of certain lysosome enzymes shows that the effect of different environmental, chemical factors (carbon disulphide, dimethyl acetamide, lead acetate; etc.) causes changes in the activity of certain lysosome enzymes and the enzyme-substrate system of N-acetyl neuraminic acid--N-acetyl neuraminic acid aldolase, participating, in the metabolism of sialocontaining glycoproteids as structural components of the brain biomembranes.

Pretreatment of male rats with phenobarbital markedly depressed the duration of pentobarbital hypnosis and stimulated the hepatic microsomal metabolism of ethylmorphine and aniline. Following selenium treatment there was a prolongation of pentobarbital hypnosis and an inhibition of metabolism of ethylmorphine with no effect on that of aniline. A histochemical study concerning the activity of phosphatases and esterases of the brain has been undertaken in rats experimentally intoxicated by the fungicide ethyl-mercury-p-toluenesulfanilide (EMTS). Intraperitoneal transplantation of collagenase-digested, isogeneic, neonatal rat pancreatic tissue successfully reversed streptozotocin-induced diabetes in 77% of recipients. The binding of 35S and 14C labelled CS2 to liver microsomes was studied in control and phenobarbitone pretreated rats 3 and 6 hrs after an intraperitoneal injection. Decrease in activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and transketolase was observed in erythrocytes of patients with mitral stenosis. Development of the disease was accompanied by a further decrease in the enzymatic activity. The activity of the enzymes was increased in myocardium of atrium sinistrum at the IV stadium as compared with the III stadium of the disease. The glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was decreased and the transketolase activity was unaltered in intercostal muscle of the patients.

The protein encoded by the gam gene of bacteriophage lambda ("gamma protein") is a specific inhibitor of the recBC enzyme of Escherichia coli.
