A 65-year-old lady presented with recurrent crusting of lips and ulceration on face since the last three weeks. History revealed recurrent herpes labialis during the previous three years. Erythema multiforme is an acute mucocutaneous disorder, characterized by varying degrees of blistering and ulceration. We report a case of recurrent herpes-associated erythema multiforme managed with prophylactic acyclovir. An 11-year-old boy had lesions in the oral cavity and lips, which had been diagnosed as erythema multiforme minor. BACKGROUND: Erythema multiforme has been linked to numerous drugs and infectious agents. A link to oral contraceptive use has been reported in the past in the adult population but thus far has not been reported in children or adolescents.
CASE: We report the case of an 18-yr-old female who developed oral erosions consistent with erythema multiforme two and a half weeks after initiating therapy with an oral contraceptive agent. A thorough examination for other inciting factors was negative, and the lesions slowly resolved over the course of 3 weeks.

A 52-year-old woman with a 13-year history of episodes of EM, after contact with weeds during home gardening, had had no recent history of herpes simplex, other infection, drug ingestion or vaccination. The authors report on the efficacy of thalidomide used to treat recurrent erythema exsudativum multiforme associated with herpes simplex with massive involvement of the entire skin and also the nasal mucosa in a 73-year-old woman. Efficacy in terms of healing and the prevention of recurrence proved to be very good.

Within the clinical spectrum of erythema multiforme, two subgroups have been recently identified: recurrent erythema multiforme and the rare persistent erythema multiforme. Two additional cases of persistent erythema multiforme are described. Lesions were widespread and resistant to traditional therapies. One of the patients had an underlying malignancy; the other exhibited a symptom complex characterized by fatigue, fever, sore throat and lymphadenopathy, and an abnormal Epstein-Barr virus serologic profile suggestive of endogenous reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus infection.

Erythema multiforme minor occurred in a woman whose pregnancy, resulted from in vitro fertilization. The skin lesions appeared at 12 weeks of gestation, while the patient was receiving injections of progesterone in oil.
