Long-term assessment of enriched housing and subventricular zone derived cell transplantation after focal ischemia in rats.

The potential for using stem cells to treat stroke has garnered much interest, but stem cell therapies must be rigorously tested in animal models before transplantation studies progress to clinical trials. An enriched environment enhances transplanted subventricular zone (SVZ) cell migration and functional benefit following stroke in rats. However, the ability of SVZ cells to survive, migrate, differentiate and promote functional recovery at protracted survival times (e.g., 3 months) has not been investigated. The vasoconstrictive peptide endothelin-1 was injected adjacent to the middle cerebr

Induction of pulmonary angiogenesis by adenoviral-mediated gene transfer of vascular endothelial growth factor.

BACKGROUND: We hypothesized that gene transfer of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) mediated by an adenovirus vector might induce pulmonary artery angiogenesis in a lamb model of pulmonary artery hypoplasia. METHODS: Thirteen fetal lambs had left pulmonary artery banding at 106 days of gestation. Following birth, 3 groups were divided: VEGF group (n = 5) and beta-GAL group (n = 4) received an adenoviral vector encoding respectively for human VEGF165 and for galactosidase A. A control group (n = 4) had neither gene nor virus. Viral suspensions were selectively instilled in the left bro

Ruminant neurological disease: a retrospective cohort study.

Between January 2006 and June 2016, 96 ruminants with neurological signs were donated to the Scottish Centre for Production Animal Health and Food Safety (SCPAHFS), University of Glasgow, by veterinarians in the field representing 5.4 per cent of all submissions. Forty-seven different neurological presenting signs were reported with 79 per cent of the donated patients presenting with abnormal gait. All cases presenting with abnormalities in more than 4 out of 10 neurological categories died or were euthanased on welfare grounds. Calves were significantly more likely to present with neurologica

[Posterior paresis due to a malignant lymphoma in a goat].

This report describes a 4-year-old goat with posterior paresis and subsequent paralysis caused by malignant lymphoma. The goat was referred to our clinic because of progressive posterior ataxia, which developed into posterior paresis and paralysis. The goat was presented in sternal recumbency but was able to assume a dog-sitting position. A neurological examination revealed reduced sensitivity to pricking of the skin with a needle, and a bilateral reduced panniculus reflex. The cerebrospinal fluid was slightly cloudy with increases in the protein concentration and leukocyte count, which consis

Clinical and pathologic features of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis in a ferret (Mustela putorius furo).

Clinical and pathologic features of neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis in a 4-month-old ferret are reported. Clinical signs including neurological symptoms appeared at 3 months of age and progressed rapidly. By magnetic resonance imaging, severe cerebral atrophy was recognized. Histopathologically, there was severe neuronal loss and diffuse astrogliosis with macrophage accumulations; lesions were found predominantly in the cerebral cortex. Intracytoplasmic pigments were observed in surviving neurons and macrophages throughout the brain. The pigments were intensely positive for periodic acid-Schiff

Use of the loop diuretic torsemide in three dogs with advanced heart failure.

Diuretics are a mainstay of therapy in dogs with heart failure. In dogs with advanced heart failure, moderate to high doses of loop diuretics such as furosemide are used with diminishing effects as profound activation of neuroendocrine systems promote signs of congestive heart failure. The loop diuretic torsemide has several characteristics that make it suitable for treatment of advanced heart failure including longer half-life, increased potency of diuretic action, and anti-aldosterone effects. This case report details the administration of torsemide in 3 dogs with advanced heart failure and

Comparison of clinical and pathological diagnoses in dogs.

Clinical and pathological diagnoses were compared in a prospective study of 145 dogs. A diagnostic work up had been performed on all dogs of which 36 (24.8%) died and 109 (75.2%) were euthanatized. In 119 dogs (82.1%) both a clinical and patholical diagnosis was made, in 20 dogs (13.8%) no pathological diagnosis could be made and in 6 dogs (4.1%) no clinical diagnosis was established. In the 119 dogs the agreement level between clinical and pathological diagnosis was scored by the referring veterinarian together with a pathologist. Total agreement was found in 61 cases (51.3%) and disagreement

Reliability of techniques used in the diagnosis of canine visceral leishmaniasis by the national control program in Brazil: A survey in an area of recent transmission.

One of the key components of the Brazilian Program for the Control of Visceral Leishmaniasis (PCLV) is the euthanasia of Leishmania-infected canine reservoirs, the detection of which depends on a screening procedure involving a Dual Path Platform® (DPP) immunoassay and a confirmatory enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The aims of the present study were to evaluate the reliability of these techniques in a region of recent transmission of canine VL, to follow up the seroconversion 3-4 months after the initial diagnosis of DPP reactive but ELISA indeterminate or non-reactive dogs, and to

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma in a dog.

A 6-month-old, intact, male Weimaraner dog presented to the veterinary teaching hospital for bilateral mucopurulent ocular and nasal discharge that began at approximately 10 weeks of age. A computed tomography scan showed an expansile soft-tissue mass involving both frontal sinuses, the ethmoid regions, and nasal cavities with lysis of the maxillary turbinates and hyperostosis of the walls of the frontal sinus. The dog was euthanized after complications during a trephination and biopsy procedure. At necropsy, a large, tan, papillary, gelatinous mass filled the entire nasal cavity and frontal s

Ceroid-lipofuscinosis in a Cocker Spaniel dog.

A neurodegenerative storage disease identified as ceroid-lipofuscinosis by light, fluorescence, and electron microscopic examinations was diagnosed in a 4-year-old female Cocker Spaniel dog with progressive ataxia and proprioceptive deficits. Stored pigment was found within neurons of the brain and spinal cord and in smooth muscle cells of the urinary bladder and small muscular arteries. The microscopic findings resembled those found in six other cases of generalized ceroid-lipofuscinosis in this breed. However, the brown discoloration of the intestines, which was the major gross lesion observ

Prevalence, quantification, and household-level risk factors associated with Salmonella spp. infection in chickens in Boussouma commune, Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Village chicken production is central to rural livelihoods across sub-Saharan Africa. However, the poor biosecurity and hygiene observed in the chicken flocks, coupled with the limited access of farmers to veterinary services, provide favorable conditions for the persistence and transmission of zoonotic pathogens such as Salmonella spp. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Salmonella in village chicken flocks; quantify fecal bacterial loads; and identify household – and flock-level risk factors associated with Salmonella spp. infection in the Boussouma commune in rural Bu

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infection in domestic pet cats in Australia and New Zealand: Guidelines for diagnosis, prevention and management.

Despite the passage of over 30 years since its discovery, the importance of feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) on the health and longevity of infected domestic cats is hotly debated amongst feline experts. Notwithstanding the absence of good quality information, Australian and New Zealand (NZ) veterinarians should aim to minimise the exposure of cats to FIV. The most reliable way to achieve this goal is to recommend that all pet cats are kept exclusively indoors, or with secure outdoor access (e.g., cat enclosures, secure gardens), with FIV testing of any in-contact cats. All animal holding f

A case report: Pawspice for a visla with splenic lymphoma.

This author's experience in oncology proposes "Pawspice," a new concept that offers early supportive care for pets with life-limiting disease, embracing palliative care and standard care. Pawspice offers compassionate and comprehensive symptom relief at diagnosis while addressing life-limiting diseases. The concept of Pawspice is to maintain quality of life with palliative care that improves the patient's debilitating conditions by 30% to 50%, while simultaneously administering standard care via gentle chemotherapy modified for low toxicity. This combination makes Pawspice different than palli

Plexogenic pulmonary arteriopathy in a Pembroke Welsh corgi.

A 21-month-old, male Pembroke Welsh corgi was referred for investigation of respiratory distress and progressive lethargy. Cardiac evaluation revealed a grade 4 pansystolic murmur over the left and right heart base. A heart murmur, dyspnoea, cyanosis, prolonged capillary refill time and ascites led to the tentative diagnosis of a cardiac malformation with a right-to-left shunt, with likely additional pulmonary disease. Pulmonary hypertension became evident during echocardiography, when the estimated systolic pulmonary artery pressure was over 70 mmHg. Angiography revealed abnormal pulmonary va

Bone regeneration in critical-size defects of the mandible using biomechanically adapted CAD/CAM hybrid scaffolds: An in vivo study in miniature pigs.

The study aimed to analyze bone regeneration in critical-size defects using hybrid scaffolds biomechanically adapted to the specific defect and adding the growth factor rhBMP-2. For this animal study, ten minipigs underwent bilateral defects in the corpus mandibulae and were subsequently treated with novel cylindrical hybrid scaffolds. These scaffolds were designed digitally to suit the biomechanical requirements of the mandibular defect, utilizing finite element analysis. The scaffolds comprised zirconium dioxide-tricalcium phosphate (ZrO2-TCP) support struts and TCP foam ceramics. One scaffo

Molecular epidemiology of feline bordetellosis in two animal shelters in California, USA.

"Kennel cough" in dogs in animal shelters is readily transmissible, reduces adoption rates, and commonly leads to the euthanasia of affected dogs. In cats, tracheobronchitis, conjunctivitis, and pneumonia have been associated with Bordetella bronchiseptica infection-but most cases of upper-respiratory infection (URI) probably are caused by herpesvirus and calicivirus, and many B. bronchiseptica culture-positive cats are clinically normal. Our prospective observational study was undertaken to document the contribution of B. bronchiseptica to disease in cats and dogs from two animal shelters und
