Points to consider for patient education provided by nurses on methotrexate use. A European consensus initiative.

BACKGROUND: Methotrexate (MTX) is the anchor and most prescribed disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug (DMARD) for inflammatory rheumatic diseases (IRDs). MTX can be very efficacious but can also have serious, life-threatening side effects. Adequate education and follow-up of patients/carers are therefore essential, and dedicated rheumatology nurse consultations are an important part of this. However, many patients across European countries lack access to nurse consultations, and there are no agreed-upon, defined standards of care for this topic. OBJECTIVES: To develop points to consider (PtC

Immune-related Circulating Biomarkers in Intracerebral Hemorrhage: Implications for Nursing Management and Prognostic Assessment.

Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remains one of the most severe stroke subtypes and requires continuous risk assessment across the acute, subacute, and rehabilitation-transition phases. This review summarizes established and emerging immune-related circulating biomarkers and discusses their relevance to nursing management and prognostic assessment. Markers with the highest current clinical readiness include peripheral blood cell counts and derived ratios, C-reactive protein (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT), whereas cytokines, chemokines, broader immunometabolic mediators, and neuroinjury-inflammat

Perioperative nursing care strategies in esophageal cancer surgery: a mini-review.

This study reviews contemporary clinical trials on perioperative nursing care management (PNCM) in esophageal cancer (EC) surgery. It evaluates four key phases of care: preoperative preparation (patient education and physiological optimization), intraoperative management (physiological monitoring and multidisciplinary team coordination), postoperative care (complication prevention and recovery), and follow-up strategies. Evidence indicates that structured PNCM protocols are associated with improved surgical outcomes. Key interventions include standardized preoperative education programs, intra

Research in practice: an 'experiment' in researcher-practitioner collaboration.

There are signs that researchers and practitioners are seriously attempting to work more closely together to bring research and practice into closer alliance. This paper describes one such attempt in the form of an 'experiment' in collaboration between academic researchers and practising nurses in the undertaking of a practice-based research project. Positive benefits of collaborative research became evident and are highlighted in this paper. No attempt was made to evaluate the 'experiment' objectively and so this is a subjective account, aimed at encouraging other efforts towards closer colla

Administrative decision-making for nurse managers: An evolutionary concept analysis.

BACKGROUND: Among nurse managers, administrative decision-making (ADM) refers to leadership behaviors that involve rational, complex processes aimed at identifying optimal courses of action. Digital advances in healthcare settings have significantly influenced nurse managers' decision-making, transitioning from traditional, intuitive approaches reliant on limited real-time data resources toward analytics-informed decision-making. Consequently, previously established ADM conceptual frameworks may limit applicability to frontline nurse managers in the contemporary healthcare context. PURPOSE: T

Strategies to support first-year nursing students' transition to higher education: An integrative review.

BACKGROUND: The first year of university represents a critical transition period for undergraduate nursing students as they adapt to the academic, social, and professional expectations of higher education. Difficulties navigating these demands can undermine engagement, confidence, and sense of belonging, contributing to early withdrawal from nursing programs. Targeted support strategies that address the multidimensional nature of transition are therefore essential. AIM: To identify and synthesise current evidence on strategies that support first-year undergraduate nursing students in their tr

Beyond Horizontal Expansion: Structural, Educational, and Leadership Pathways to Nursing Professional Empowerment.

The horizontal growth of nursing education globally over recent decades has not been matched by a corresponding vertical breakthrough in professional autonomy. Nurses remain structurally subordinated within clinical governance, resource allocation, and institutional decision-making. This discursive paper argues that this gap persists because three mutually reinforcing mechanisms remain intact: historically entrenched institutional path dependence, operational deficits in competency-based evaluation frameworks, and persistent gaps in how leadership translates structural and educational reforms

The next frontier in advanced practice nursing: Infectious diseases nurse practitioner certification.

The increasing complexity of infectious diseases (ID) care, including antimicrobial stewardship, emerging pathogens, outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy, and expanding immunocompromised populations, has significantly broadened the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) in IDs practice. Concurrent challenges, including antimicrobial resistance, recurrent pandemics, evolving immunization guidelines, and vaccine hesitancy, further underscore the need for specialized expertise. This article proposes formal recognition of IDs as a NP subspecialty and outlines a framework for a postgraduate certi

Developing competency evaluation indicators for neurosurgical specialist nurses: a Delphi-AHP study.

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical nursing is a high-demand specialized field requiring comprehensive professional competency. In 2023 when this study commenced, no standardized, validated competency evaluation framework existed for Chinese neurosurgical specialist nurses, and no official certification program was available. Although the Chinese Nursing Association launched neurosurgical specialist nurse certification in 2025, a structured, evidence-based assessment tool remains lacking, leaving a critical gap in clinical nursing talent training and management. This study aimed to construct competency

Eating disorders and equine therapy: a nurse's perspective on connecting through the recovery process.

Patients with eating disorders may have the most complex interdisciplinary treatment plans of any mental illness. Nurses need innovative evidence-based treatment interventions to assist their patients with eating disorders on their road to recovery. Although much has been written about equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP) and equine-facilitated psychotherapy, the literature has not described a detailed session that can help nurses understand how this experiential treatment works and the impact it can have on the patient. A review of the literature on eating disorders and on the use of equine th

Achieving Independence in Toileting: Self-Catheterization Efficacy and the Role of the School Nurse.

The school nurse is the most consistent healthcare provider for students who require scheduled intermittent self-catheterization; however, there is little literature regarding the role of the school nurse for educating and promoting self-catheterization independence for pediatric populations in the school setting. School nurses are dependent on research to identify best practices when implementing teaching strategies with young students who are ready to start catheterizing independently. The intent of this article is to contribute relevant information that is both useful and evidence based, so

Vaccinology Education of Nurses and the Current Immunoprophylaxis Recommendations for Children with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

INTRODUCTION: The immunosuppressive effect of the disease and the applied treatment in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis increases the risk of infections. It is therefore essential that vaccinations be properly implemented and that a proper serological response is provoked after the vaccination. A competent nurse acting in compliance with the current recommendations constitutes one of the safety pillars of immunization of pediatric patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. AIM: To discuss evidence-based recommendations for immunization of pediatric patients with juvenile idiopath

Standard of Care for Chronic Kidney Disease: The Four Pillars of Pharmacotherapy - Implications for Nephrology Nursing Practice.

Management of individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has evolved substantially with the emergence of multiple therapies shown to slow progression of kidney disease and reduce cardiovascular risk. The pillars of pharmacotherapy in CKD now include four distinct classes: renin-angiotensin system inhibitors, sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors, nonsteroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists, and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists. As pharmacotherapy becomes more complex, nephrology nurses play a critical role in medication management, patient education, laboratory monitori

Identifying the most important workplace factors in predicting nurse mental health using machine learning techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Nurses are at a high risk of developing mental health problems due to exposure to work environment risk factors. Previous research in this area has only examined a few factors within nurses' work environments, and those factors were not conceptualized with the goal of improving workplace mental health. The purpose of this study is to identify the most important work environment predictors of nurse mental health using a comprehensive and theoretically grounded measure based on the National Standard of Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace. METHODS: This is an exploratory
