Vestibulospinal evoked potential versus motor evoked potential monitoring in experimental spinal cord injuries of cats.

Changes in vestibulospinal evoked potentials (VsEP) and motor evoked potentials (MEP) were examined in 10 cats before and after two different weight-dropping spinal cord injuries. In six animals somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) were also monitored. The recordings were done from epidural spinal cord electrodes. Before and after severe and light weight-dropping spinal cord injuries all 3 modalities were recorded at the same time intervals till the end of 4th hour postinjury. According to a scoring system, evoked potential changes below and above the level of injury were monitored, and compa…

Anesthetic Management of a Patient With Mitochondrial Encephalomyopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-Like Episodes Syndrome During Extensive Spinal Surgery With Both Motor Evoked Potentials and Somatosensory Evoked Potentials: A Case Report.

Mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a complex and infrequently encountered mitoch … sterior spinal fusion. The surgical plan included neuromonitoring with both somatosensory and motor evoked potentials. Intravenous anesthetics such as propofol are typically preferred in this context due to their reduced interference with neuromonitoring compared to volatile anesthetics. Anticipating a surgical duration of six to seven hours, however, we hesitated …

Ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials in unilateral Ménière's disease: a narrative literature review.

The ocular vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP) is a promising non-invasive tool for assessing utricular function and superior vestibular nerve integrity. In the context of definite unilateral Ménière's disease, studies have consistently reported altered oVEMP responses in affected ears, including altered amplitudes, higher stimuli needed before receiving a verifiable response or prolonged latencies. These findings are thought to reflect the presence and accumulation of endolymphatic hydrops. However, variability across studies is substantial. This inconsistency may reflect fluctuating

Beyond flickering: introducing code-modulated motion visual evoked potentials for brain-computer interfacing.

This study presents a novel code-modulated motion visual evoked potential (c-MVEP) paradigm for brain-computer interfacing (BCI). To avoid the visual discomfort and fatigue often associated with traditional flickering stimuli, this paradigm uses pseudo-random sequences to visually stimulate objects using motion. We conducted offline and online experiments, to investigate signal characteristics and evaluate practical feasibility, respectively. In the offline experiment, EEG data were recorded and compared during sequential stimulation of a single target under four conditions: c-MVEP, code-modul

Online Signal-to-Noise Management for Evoked Potentials-Assessing and Explaining Response Quality.

(1) Background: Evoked potentials (EPs) are an elegant, non-invasive, and reliable technique for assessing the functional integrity of neural pathways. They are, however, often limited by the difficulty and time needed to consistently distinguish signal from noise. (2) Methods: We have recently proposed a novel technique based on spectral domain evoked-to-background ratio (EBR) that enables fast data acquisition with online feedback about actual signal quality utilizing state of the art analog-to-digital conversion. Furthermore, we have developed a novel model-based signal-to-noise management …

Improving Diagnostic Accuracy for Peripheral Neuropathy: Use of Tibial Nerve Somatosensory Evoked Potentials.

Background: We investigated whether combining a sural nerve sensory conduction study (s-SCS) and tibial nerve SEPs (t-SEPs) improves diagnostic accuracy for peripheral sensory neuropathy. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 74 consecutive cases (114 lower limbs) of patients suspected of having neuropathy or radiculopathy who underwent s-SCSs and t-SEPs between July 2021 and December 2024. Abnormal S-SCSs were defined as a reduction in amplitude or a slowing of conduction velocity. Abnormal t-SEPs were defined as failure to evoke N20 or P37, or prolonged latency of either. Results: No cases sh

Loneliness is associated with altered interoceptive appraisal and attenuated prefrontal heartbeat-evoked potentials.

Loneliness is associated with heightened affective sensitivity and increased vulnerability to stress, yet its psychophysiological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Drawing on the three-dimensional model of interoception (Garfinkel et al., 2015), the present study examined whether loneliness is associated with variation in interoceptive sensibility (self-report), interoceptive accuracy (behavioral), and cortical processing of cardiac signals (heartbeat-evoked potential; HEP). Two primary hypotheses were tested: higher loneliness would be associated with lower interoceptive sensibility,

Pharmacological evidence for propagation dynamics of TMS-evoked potentials in the human brain.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial magnetic stimulation-evoked potentials (TEPs) propagate from the stimulation site to distributed brain networks, with early propagation thought to occur predominantly through feedforward processes and later propagation through recurrent processes. We employed pharmacological manipulation to probe mechanisms that underlie feedforward and recurrent signal propagation in the human brain. METHODS: We manipulated TEP propagation using GABAAergic drugs in placebo-controlled randomized crossover experiments in healthy participants. Experiment 1 tested zolpidem and alprazolam…

Inter-session repeatability of electroretinography and visual evoked potentials of the Celeris system.

PURPOSE: The Celeris system (Diagnosys LLC) offers a streamlined alternative to the gold-standard Espion system for high-throughput electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potentials (VEP) in preclinical studies. This study evaluated its inter-session repeatability of ERG and VEP measurements in healthy rodent retinae. METHODS: Twenty-five wild type Brown Norway rats underwent ERG and VEP testing across two sessions. Dark-adapted ERG a- and b-waves (flash stimulus of 10 cd s/m2), and the photopic negative response (PhNR) (flash stimulus of 3 cd s/m2) were recorded. VEPs (flash stimulus of…

Long-Term Effects on Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials in Children With Cochlear Implantation.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the long-term effects of cochlear implantation (CI) on vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) in children. METHODS: CI surgery was performed in a unilateral ear of 31 patients in the department of otolaryngology, Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from 2011 to 2015. The group comprised 15 boys and 16 girls, with a mean age of 10.68±7.60 years old. All operations were performed by the same surgeon, and the round window approach was used for all. Both ocular VEMPs (oVEMPs) and cervical VEMPs (cVEMPs) were detected on bilateral ears before operat

Extracting robust single-trial somatosensory evoked potentials for non-invasive brain computer interfaces.

Objective.Reliable extraction of single-trial somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) is essential for developing brain-computer interface (BCI) applications to support rehabilitation after brain injury. For real-time feedback, these responses must be extracted prospectively on every trial, with minimal post-processing and artifact correction. However, noninvasive SEPs elicited by electrical stimulation at recommended parameter settings (0.1-0.2 msec pulse width, stimulation at or below motor threshold, 2-5 Hz frequency) are typically small and variable, often requiring averaging across multipl…

Analysis of visual evoked potentials in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1: new concepts.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF type 1) is an autosomal dominant disease with typical clinical manifestations, such as skin lesions, Lisch nodules, optic pathway gliomas, and neurofibromas, caused by the mutation of the NF1 gene. Visual evoked potentials (VEP) present a measure of the electrophysiological response of visual cortex to a visual stimulus. The role of VEP in the pathophysiology of NF type 1 is very complex and requires additional research. THE AIM: We examined the differences between NF type 1 patients with normal and altered VEP and analyzed the correlation between th…

Impact of repeated intranasal gentamicin irrigation on auditory brainstem evoked potentials in rats.

Gentamicin is a bactericidal aminoglycoside antibiotic that broadly targets Gram-negative microbes. Both human and animal studies have shown … saline from postnatal day (P) 21-31. We examined auditory function by assessing brainstem auditory evoked potentials in response to both broadband clicks and pure tone-pips (4, 8, 16, 24 and 32 kHz) on P41. We found significant changes in auditory function in gentamicin-exposed animals. Specifically, gentamicin-exposed animals had significantly higher thresholds i …

Visually evoked potentials (VEPs) across the visual field in hearing and deaf cats.

INTRODUCTION: Congenitally deaf cats perform better on visual localization tasks than hearing cats, and this advantage has been attributed to the posterior auditory field. Successful visual localization requires both visual processing of the target and timely generation of an action to approach the target. Activation of auditory cortex in deaf subjects during visual localization in the peripheral visual field can occur either via bottom-up stimulus-driven and/or top-down goal-directed pathways. METHODS: In this study, we recorded visually evoked potentials (VEPs) in response to a reversing ch…

Electrically evoked compound action potentials in cochlear implant users with preoperative residual hearing.

INTRODUCTION: Residual hearing in cochlear implant (CI) candidates requires the functional integrity of the nerve in particular regions of the cochlea. Nerve activity can be elicited as electrically evoked compound action potentials (ECAP) after cochlear implantation. We hypothesize that ECAP thresholds depend on preoperative residual hearing ability. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analyzed 84 adult cochlear implant users who had received a Nucleus® CI632 Slim Modiolar Electrode and who preoperatively had had residual hearing. Inclusion criteria were severe to profound he

Cortical potentials evoked by tone frequency changes can predict speech perception in noise.

Accurate and objective assessment of higher order auditory processing is challenging and mainly relies on evaluations that require a subjects' active participation in tests such as frequency discrimination or speech perception in noise. This study investigates the value of cortical auditory evoked potentials (CAEPs) evoked in response to auditory change stimuli, known as acoustic change complexes (ACCs), as an objective measurement of auditory performance in hearing impairment. Secondary objectives were to assess the effect of hearing loss and non-professional musical experience on the ACC, an…
