Nine patients with active ocular or optic nerve involvement by syphilis who also had concurrent human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infection are described. PURPOSE: Although Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are the commonest sexually transmitted infections in England, reports of ocular co-infection in the literature are limited. We report such a case which responded well to treatment, and discuss the literature and evidence currently available with regards to management of these cases.
OBSERVATIONS: The patient is a 48-year-old bisexual gentleman who presented to the eye clinic of a UK hospital with redness, discharge and blurred vision in his left eye for one week. Initially he had mucopurulent discharge but his cornea was clear.

PURPOSE: To report the clinical findings, therapy and outcomes of pauci-symptomatic Aspergillus infection in 11 eyes of 11 patients who had recently undergone uneventful cataract surgery and IOL implantation in a single operating room on the same day.
METHODS: Retrospective, observational study that looks at 11 patients who demonstrated Aspergillus infection after cataract surgery. Spontaneous corneal perforation with extrusion of intraocular contents is a disastrous and exceptional event that may occur in premature infants or in adults with severe ocular diseases. It is probable that, during the evolution of the corneal ulcer in this case, the organisms had caused necrosis of the cornea, culminating in a corneal perforation followed by a rapid decompression of the anterior chamber with a resultant expulsive hemorrhage.

In a study of Onchocerca cervicalis infection in a sample of 100 horses from the western United States, 48 were infected. Infection was more common in older horses and occurred in both sexes equally. PURPOSE: To evaluate a corneal impression membrane (CIM) for isolation of bacteria, fungi and acanthamoeba in suspected microbial keratitis.
METHODS: Consecutive patients presenting with suspected microbial keratitis were included. For each patient, samples were collected in a random order using a surgical blade and a 4-mm-diameter polytetrafluoroethylene CIM disc, and transported in brain heart infusion broth. Risk factors, best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), size, location, depth and healing time of the ulcer were recorded. The microbial isolation rate was used to compare sampling methods.

The left eyes of 10 conventional dairy cross calves were inoculated with a pathogenic strain of Moraxella bovis and lesions of infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis developed in nine of these eyes. M bovis was isolated from all inoculated eyes and lesions developed in five out of 10 eyes which had become naturally infected. The clinical and microbiological findings were similar to those described in field cases.
