Psychological wellbeing in parents of children with Down syndrome: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

We report a review examining the psychological wellbeing of parents of children with Down syndrome (DS) relative to that of parents of typically developing (TD) children. A systematic search identified 57 relevant studies, which were synthesised meta-analytically. Relative to their counterparts with TD children, mothers and fathers of children with DS reported higher levels of parenting stress (mothers: g = 0.57, 95% CI [0.33, 0.81]; fathers: g = 0.40, [0.24, 0.56]), depressive symptoms (mothers: g = 0.42, [0.23, 0.61]; fathers: g = 0.25, [0.02, 0.48]) and psychological distress (mothers: g = …

Impairment of GH secretion in adults with primary empty sella.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal bonding constitutes a major process during the postpartum period, and there is evidence that bonding difficulties have … a gender perspective. METHODS: Instrumental design. In 2016-2017, a sample of 571 mothers and 376 fathers, with children between 6 and 11 months of age, responded to the Spanish version of MPAS and PPAS, respectively. After a process of translation-back-translation of the instrument, we empirically analyzed the internal consistency (Cronbach alpha, comp …

Paternal involvement after perinatal death.

This study describes paternal involvement after perinatal death in a large, mostly minority, lower socioeconomic status sample. Paternal pre … uded 722 cases of perinatal death between July 1978 and April 1991. The results indicated that many fathers experienced perinatal grief. More than half attended the birth, a quarter chose to hold their baby, and one fifth returned with the mother to follow-up appointments. Paternal-maternal cohabitation was the variable most predictive of the fathers' inv …

Perceived economic strain exacerbates the effect of paternal depressed mood on hostility.

Depression in fathers has been associated with impaired parenting, which, in turn, may function as a central environmental mechanism underlying the adverse effects of paternal depression on children's development. Despite this, evidence suggests that many depressed fathers are able to maintain positive relationships with their children, and little is known about factors associated with better or worse parenting outcomes when fathers experience depression. Using two waves of prospective, longitudinal data from a community sample of fathers and their high school-aged adolescent offspring (N = 32…

Parent couples' participation in speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States.

This study examined parent couples' participation in and satisfaction with speech-language therapy for school-age children with autism spectrum disorder in the United States. Responses from 40 father-mother couples (n = 80 parents) were examined across therapy components (i.e. parent-therapist communication, assessment, planning, and intervention). Descriptive frequencies, chi-square tests, intraclass correlations, and dyadic multilevel modeling were used to examine participation across fathers and mothers and within parent couples. Compared to mothers, fathers communicated less with therapist…

Twin pregnancy possibly associated with high semen quality.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies found an association between a long waiting time to pregnancy (TTP) and reduced probability of twinning and a reduced dizygotic (DZ) twinning rate in subfertile men. However, it remains unsolved whether semen quality is associated with twin offspring. We therefore studied the semen quality in a group of fathers of naturally conceived twins. METHODS: In this study, 37 fathers of DZ twins and 15 fathers of monozygotic (MZ) twins participated, and 349 normal fertile men served as a reference group. All men delivered a semen sample, underwent a physical examination and …

Adverse childhood experiences and paternal mental health during the transition to fatherhood: Findings from a cohort study of Australian men.

BACKGROUND: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with poorer mental health across the life course. However, research examining ACEs during the transition to parenthood has largely focused on mothers, with limited evidence on fathers. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between cumulative and specific ACEs and mental health and wellbeing among first-time fathers during the first year after their child's birth. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 718 first-time fathers (Mage = 34.69 years; SD = 6.98 years) drawn from the Ten to Men Study, a population-representative cohor…

Explaining the Link Between Paternal Socioeconomic Position and Small for Gestational Age Birth: The Effect of Maternal Unhealthy Behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the proportion of small for gestational age (weight < 10th percentile, SGA) births among fathers with lifelong low (compared to high) socioeconomic position (SEP) attributable to white and African-American women's unhealthy pregnancy-related behaviors. METHODS: Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition methods were conducted on the Illinois transgenerational dataset of infants (1989-1991) and their Chicago-born parents (1956-1976) with appended US census income data. The neighborhood income of father's residence at the time of his birth and at the time of his infant's birth were us…

Prevalence, symptomatology, risk factors and healthcare services utilization regarding paternal depression in Germany: study protocol of a controlled cross-sectional epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: While postpartum depression is a well-researched disorder in mothers, there is growing evidence indicating that some fathers also develop depressive symptoms (paternal postpartum depression, PPD). A recent meta-analysis revealed a total prevalence of paternal depression during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum of 8.4%, with significant heterogeneity observed among prevalence rates. International studies suggest that PPD is characterized by additional symptoms compared to maternal postpartum depression. Furthermore, various risk factors of PPD have been identified. However, th…

Who Are the Men Caring for Maltreated Youth? Male Primary Caregivers in the Child Welfare System.

The goal of this study is to better understand the characteristics of men who act as primary caregivers of maltreated children. We examined differences between male primary caregivers (fathers) for youth involved in the child welfare system and female primary caregivers (mothers). We conducted secondary data analyses of the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Well-Being-II baseline data. Overall, primary caregiving fathers and mothers were more similar than different, though a few differences were revealed. Compared to mothers, fathers tended to be older and were more likely to be employed…

Family functioning and children's adjustment: associations among parents' depressed mood, marital hostility, parent-child hostility, and children's adjustment.

Relations between parents' depressed mood, marital conflict, parent-child hostility, and children's adjustment were examined in a community sample of 136 ten-year-olds and their parents. Videotaped observational and self-report data were used to examine these relations in path analyses. A proposed model was tested in which mothers' and fathers' depressed mood and marital hostility were associated with children's adjustment problems through disruptions in parent-child relationships. Results showed that both mothers' and fathers' marital hostility were linked to parent-child hostility, which in …

The transition to human fatherhood involves increased brain activation to infant stimuli in regions involved with reward and motivation.

In species where males provide parental care, the transition to fatherhood involves a shift in life history strategy in the direction of inc … therhood in men and compare these changes with those found in a sample of non-father control males. Fathers were generally less willing than non-fathers to exert effort to view female stimuli; however, there were no apparent changes in motivation to engage with either infant or female stimuli across the transition to fatherhood. On the other hand, changes …

Dynamics of postnatal depressive symptoms in early parenthood.

BACKGROUND: New mothers and fathers are at risk of developing postnatal depressive problems. To understand how postnatal depressive symptoms unfold over time, analyses at the within-person level are necessary. Inspecting postnatal depressive problems at the symptom level provides a novel perspective, ultimately offering insight into which symptoms contribute to the elevation of other symptoms over time. METHODS: Panel graphical vector-autoregression (GVAR) models were applied to analyze the within-person temporal and contemporaneous relations between depressive symptoms across the postnatal p…

Gender differences in predictors of quality of life for parents of children with Autism Spectrum disorder in Saudi Arabia.

PURPOSE: Few researchers have examined gender differences in the quality of life (QoL) of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in diverse cultural contexts. The purpose of this study was to identify how ASD severity, affiliate stigma, perceived social support, family functioning, and coping strategies differentially predict the QoL of mothers and fathers of children with ASD in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN AND METHODS: Based on a cross-sectional research design, data were gathered between April and July 2023 from a convenience sample of 376 parents (220 mothers and 156 fathers) of …

Support for the Supporter: Paternal Postpartum Loneliness and Social Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

During the postpartum period, fathers may be at risk of increased stress and loneliness, which may be offset or buffered by the provision of social support. This study aimed to explore fathers' postpartum experiences of loneliness, perceived stress, and social support. A constructivist grounded theory approach was used to inform study design and analysis. Semistructured interviews were conducted to collect data from 12 fathers, living in the Republic of Ireland, who had an infant aged 6 months or younger. A grounded theory entitled "support for the supporter," describing fathers' experiences w…

Gender and emotions: Icelandic parents experiencing childhood cancer.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate gender difference and the level of well-being among 26 Icelandic parents of children under 18 years with cancer and to compare mothers' and fathers' caregiving demands. Contrary to expectations, there was no overall significant difference between mothers' and fathers' well-being or their caregiving demands. On the other hand, the level of well-being was significantly different between the parents; 56% of the mothers showed clinically or problem-indicative stress, compared to 26.3% of the fathers. These findings emphasize the impact of cancer in children…

Strong Father-Child Relationships and Other Positive Childhood Experiences, Adverse Childhood Experiences, and Sexual Risk Factors for HIV among Young Adults Aged 19-24 Years, Namibia, 2019: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Using cross-sectional data from the 2019 Namibia Violence Against Children and Youth Survey and sex-stratified multivariable models, we assessed the associations between four different positive childhood experiences (PCEs) and having ≥3 adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including ≥3 ACE-PCE interaction terms, and seven sexual risk factors for HIV acquisition among young adults aged 19-24 years. One PCE, having a strong father-child relationship, was inversely associated with two risk factors among women (lifetime transactional sex (OR, 0.4; 95% CI, 0.2-0.7) and recent age-disparate sexual

"I have to be a man for my son": The narrative uses of fatherhood in prison.

Research on incarcerated fathers tends to accentuate the harmful familial consequences of parental incarceration and discuss how having children might prompt incarcerated fathers to desist from crime. Less attention has focused on how narratives of fatherhood shape the day-to-day dynamics of incarceration. Drawing on 93 qualitative interviews with incarcerated fathers in Western Canada, we focus specifically on our participants' parenting narratives. Such narratives are significant interventions in the world, allowing incarcerated fathers to frame their identities in particular ways while simu…

The Role of Paternal Accommodation of Paediatric OCD Symptoms: Patterns and Implications for Treatment Outcomes.

Family accommodation (FA) refers to the participation of family members in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) rituals. Most studies have focused on maternal accommodation; consequently, little is known about fathers' accommodation of OCD. The current study aims to extend the existing literature by examining maternal versus paternal accommodation of OCD symptoms. The sample consisted of 209 children with OCD (Mean [M] age = 14.1 years) and their parents (NMothers = 209, NFathers = 209) who had completed the Family Accommodation Scale- Parent Report (FAS-PR). Paired t-test and chi-square analyse…

Parents' perception of child behavior, parenting stress, and child abuse potential: Individual and partner influences.

Based on the Social Information Processing model of parenting risk for child abuse, the present study examined the associations between mothers' and fathers' perception of child behavior and child abuse potential, as well as whether parenting stress mediates the association between these constructs. Two hundred and fifty-nine mother-father couples raising preschool children answered the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), and the Child Abuse Potential Inventory (CAPI). The results of dyadic path analysis showed that perception of child behavior was related to hei…
