Growth Hormone Action in Somatostatin Neurons Regulates Anxiety and Fear Memory.

Dysfunctions in growth hormone (GH) secretion increase the prevalence of anxiety and other neuropsychiatric diseases. GH receptor (GHR) signaling in the amygdala has been associated with fear memory, a key feature of posttraumatic stress disorder. However, it is currently unknown which neuronal population is targeted by GH action to influence the development of neuropsychiatric diseases. Here, we showed that approximately 60% of somatostatin (SST)-expressing neurons in the extended amygdala are directly responsive to GH. GHR ablation in SST-expressing cells (SSTΔGHR mice) caused no alterations…

Association Between Positive Troponin and Fear of Earthquakes: A Retrospective Study.

Introduction The association between natural disasters and cardiovascular events has been well-established. However, the impact of earthquakes on cardiac health, and the role of fear in this association, remains unclear. This study aims to examine the association between positive troponin levels, indicating cardiac ischemia, and fear of earthquakes among Emergency Room patients at a referral center in Beirut, Lebanon. Materials and methods This is a retrospective study conducted on patients who presented to the Emergency Room with suspected cardiac symptoms and were ordered a troponin level af…

Fear avoidance and return to work after mild traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVES: Fear avoidance is associated with symptom persistence after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). In this study, we investigated whether fear avoidance was associated with other outcomes such as return to work-related activity (RTW). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed associations between fear avoidance and RTW 6-9 months after mTBI, in two merged prospective mTBI cohorts. Adult participants aged 16 or over (n=175), presenting to outpatient services in New Zealand within 3 months of their injury, who were engaged in work-related activity at the time of injury, were included. Partici…

Public Fear and Risk Perception During Dengue Fever Outbreak in Taiwan.

This study aimed to understand the public reaction to the 2015 dengue outbreak in Taiwan by determining the key influencing factors. A total of 1104 respondents aged 18 years and over, were recruited by telephone between November 20 and 28, 2015, to investigate fear, risk perception, and psychological distress during the dengue outbreak. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that fear of dengue was more prevalent in the areas that were most affected, as well as those with infected friends or relatives. Fear was also more pronounced among females and the elderly group, especially in term…

Genome-wide Scan of Dental Fear and Anxiety Nominates Novel Genes.

Dental care-related fear and anxiety (DFA) is prevalent, affects oral health care utilization, and is related to poor oral health and decreased quality of life. In addition to learned and cultural factors, genetics is hypothesized to contribute to DFA. Therefore, we performed a genome-wide association study to identify genetic variants contributing to DFA. Adult and adolescent participants were from 4 cohorts (3 from the US-based Center for Oral Health Research in Appalachia, n = 1,144, 1,164, and 535, and the UK-based Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children [ALSPAC], n = 2,078). Two s…

Fear, disgust, hate: negative emotions evoked by animals in ancient literature.

Ancient literature contains thoughts, observations and opinions about animals causing fear, disgust or hate that can be of great interest to scientists researching the problem of phobias, fears and anxieties in history. So in this article, it is argued that we can go as far back as ancient times in the research on the history of animal phobias (or, speaking more generally, in research on the entire spectrum of negative emotions evoked by animals in individuals or in entire social groups or societies). In that period, the phenomenon was observed and described in an anecdotal form, and attempts …

From Fear to Safety: A Roadmap to Recovery From Musculoskeletal Pain.

Contemporary conceptualizations of pain emphasize its protective function. The meaning assigned to pain drives cognitive, emotional, and behavioral responses. When pain is threatening and a person lacks control over their pain experience, it can become distressing, self-perpetuating, and disabling. Although the pathway to disability is well established, the pathway to recovery is less researched and understood. This Perspective draws on recent data on the lived experience of people with pain-related fear to discuss both fear and safety-learning processes and their implications for recovery for…

Sex differences in fear memory consolidation via Tac2 signaling in mice.

Memory formation is key for brain functioning. Uncovering the memory mechanisms is helping us to better understand neural processes in health and disease. Moreover, more specific treatments for fear-related disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder and phobias may help to decrease their negative impact on mental health. In this line, the Tachykinin 2 (Tac2) pathway in the central amygdala (CeA) has been shown to be sufficient and necessary for the modulation of fear memory consolidation. CeA-Tac2 antagonism and its pharmacogenetic temporal inhibition impair fear memory in male mice. Surp…

Posterior subthalamic nucleus (PSTh) mediates innate fear-associated hypothermia in mice.

The neural mechanisms of fear-associated thermoregulation remain unclear. Innate fear odor 2-methyl-2-thiazoline (2MT) elicits rapid hypothermia and elevated tail temperature, indicative of vasodilation-induced heat dissipation, in wild-type mice, but not in mice lacking Trpa1-the chemosensor for 2MT. Here we report that Trpa1-/- mice show diminished 2MT-evoked c-fos expression in the posterior subthalamic nucleus (PSTh), external lateral parabrachial subnucleus (PBel) and nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS). Whereas tetanus toxin light chain-mediated inactivation of NTS-projecting PSTh neuron…

Fear the reaper: reversible cerebrovascular vasoconstriction syndrome after hot pepper ingestion.

The Carolina Reaper pepper is one of the spiciest edible peppers in the world. While localized symptoms such as mouth burning, mouth numbness, and even vomiting are the main risks of eating these peppers, recent case reports have revealed more serious complications of these potent foods. A 15-year-old healthy male ingested a Carolina Reaper pepper on a dare. Two days later, he developed an acute headache during football practice and was subsequently diagnosed with an acute cerebellar infarct and reversible cerebrovascular vasoconstriction syndrome. Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome

Testing a gamified Spider App to reduce spider fear and avoidance.

Mobile applications are increasingly part of mental health programs and various apps have been developed for treating anxiety disorders. Typically, they aim to improve anxiety symptoms via established CBT techniques, such as exposure principles, which are considered extremely unpleasant for fearful individuals. We combined in a mobile application exposure principles with gamification elements (e.g. narrative background, level progression, points, and feedback). These elements should increase the motivation for confronting spider images and decrease the experienced distress. To evaluate the app…

Fear expressions of dogs during New Year fireworks: a video analysis.

A high proportion of pet dogs show fear-related behavioural problems, with noise fears being most prevalent. Nonetheless, few studies have objectively evaluated fear expression in this species. Using owner-provided video recordings, we coded behavioural expressions of pet dogs during a real-life firework situation at New Year's Eve and compared them to behaviour of the same dogs on a different evening without fireworks (control condition), using Wilcoxon signed ranks tests. A backwards-directed ear position, measured at the base of the ear, was most strongly associated with the fireworks condi…

Evaluation of the Fear Avoidance Behavior after Traumatic Brain Injury Questionnaire.

Fear avoidance behavior is related to symptom persistence and disability in various health conditions, such as chronic pain. Fear avoidance behavior also may impact recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), but no measure of this construct has been psychometrically validated for the mTBI population. Adults who sustained an mTBI (n = 159) were recruited from three outpatient mTBI clinics. Participants completed the new Fear Avoidance Behavior after Traumatic Brain Injury Questionnaire (FAB-TBI). The FAB-TBI includes 16 items drawn from well-established fear avoidance scales, primarily i…

Reducing Amygdala Activity and Phobic Fear through Cognitive Top-Down Regulation.

The amygdala is critically involved in emotional processing, including fear responses, and shows hyperactivity in anxiety disorders. Previous research in healthy participants has indicated that amygdala activity is down-regulated by cognitively demanding tasks that engage the PFC. It is unknown, however, if such an acute down-regulation of amygdala activity might correlate with reduced fear in anxious participants. In an fMRI study of 43 participants (11 men) with fear of snakes, we found reduced amygdala activity when visual stimuli were processed under high cognitive load, irrespective of wh…

Fear of pain and pain intensity: Meta-analysis and systematic review.

The fear avoidance model (FAM) represents a cognitive-behavioral explanatory approach for pain chronification. The core assumption is that fear of pain (FOP) following an acute pain experience facilitates the development of pain chronification, disability, and receding functionality. Thus, the model predicts a positive association between FOP and pain intensity in pain patients, which was frequently investigated; however, results were inconsistent. To highlight inconsistencies, we performed integrative statistical analysis aimed at evaluating the strength of the cross-sectional relation betwee…

Eternal sunshine of the neuromodulated mind: Altering fear memories through neuromodulation.

Anxiety disorders pose one of the greatest threats to mental health. Modern treatment methods exist but are hindered by relapse, toxicity, and low efficacy. The use of neuromodulation to treat anxiety disorders has shown promising results, yet its underpinning mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this review, we make the case for further development of neuromodulation techniques to alter fear memories, with particular regard to future clinical applications in treating anxiety disorders. We start by briefly summarizing the neural circuitry of fear while identifying the pros and cons of possi…
