Disordered eating practices in gastrointestinal disorders.

PURPOSE: To systematically review evidence concerning disordered eating practices in dietary-controlled gastrointestinal conditions. Three key questions were examined: a) are disordered eating practices a feature of GI disorders?; b) what abnormal eating practices are present in those with GI disorders?; and c) what factors are associated with the presence of disordered eating in those with GI disorders? By exploring these questions, we aim to develop a conceptual model of disordered eating development in GI disease. METHODS: Five key databases, Web of Science with Conference Proceedings (190

Behavioral Outcomes Associated with Hormonal Sterilization in a Questionnaire-Based Study of Cats.

Treatment of cats with pharmacological reproductive control is becoming increasingly common, with deslorelin implants as the primary non-surgical method. However, few studies have systematically documented behavioral changes after implantation. This study evaluated 28 behaviors, grouped into eight categories, in 82 cats at one and three months post-deslorelin implantation. At the group level, behavioral changes over time showed a consistent pattern, with decreases in reproductive behaviors, inappropriate elimination, and activity and increases in positive social behaviors and feeding and drink

Maternal emotional feeding practices and adolescent daughters' emotional eating: Mediating roles of avoidant and preoccupied coping.

The current study examined the link between early childhood emotional feeding and adolescent girls' emotional eating, using maladaptive coping styles as the underlying mechanisms mediating these associations. We examined adolescent girls' and mothers' retrospective reports of emotional feeding during childhood, as well as adolescent girls' current reports of their coping behaviors (i.e., preoccupied and avoidant) and emotional eating. Findings showed that adolescent girls' and mothers' retrospective reports of early emotional feeding were positively associated with adolescent girls' emotional

Plant jasmonic acid mediated contrasting effects of two citrus aphid species on Diaphorina citri Kuwayama.

BACKGROUND: Herbivores may influence each other directly and through plant mediated inter-specific interactions. The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri Kuwayama) and citrus aphids are key pests that can co-exist on citrus, but their plant-mediated interaction between them is unknown. Here we investigated plant-mediated effect of two citrus aphid species, the polyphagous Aphis spiraecola Patch and the oligophagous Aphis (Toxoptera) citricidus (Kirkaldy) on the feeding behavior and reproduction of Diaphorina citri, and explored the underlying mechanisms. RESULTS: In comparison with those on…

The Anorexigenic Neural Pathways of Oxytocin and Their Clinical Implication.

Oxytocin was discovered in 1906 as a peptide that promotes delivery and milk ejection; however, its additional physiological functions were determined 100 years later. Many recent articles have reported newly discovered effects of oxytocin on social communication, bonding, reward-related behavior, adipose tissue, and muscle and food intake regulation. Because oxytocin neurons project to various regions in the brain that contribute to both feeding reward (hedonic feeding) and the regulation of energy balance (homeostatic feeding), the mechanisms of oxytocin on food intake regulation are complic

Automatic Recognition of Fish Behavior with a Fusion of RGB and Optical Flow Data Based on Deep Learning.

The rapid and precise recognition of fish behavior is critical in perceiving health and welfare by allowing farmers to make informed management decisions on recirculating aquaculture systems while reducing labor. The conventional recognition methods are to obtain movement information by implanting sensors on the skin or in the body of the fish, which can affect the normal behavior and welfare of the fish. We present a novel nondestructive method with spatiotemporal and motion information based on deep learning for real-time recognition of fish schools' behavior. In this work, a dual-stream 3D

A Latent Profile Analysis of Body Image and Disordered Eating Attitudes and Behaviors in Adolescent Boys.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a risk period for body dissatisfaction which can contribute to eating disorder development. Given sex or gender differences in body image and disordered eating, it is critical to examine body image and eating concerns in adolescent boys and whether mindfulness is associated with body image and eating attitudes and behaviors in this population. METHODS: Self-report questionnaires on body image, mindfulness, and disordered eating attitudes and behaviors were completed by 151 adolescent boys (Mage = 14.58 years, SD = 2.08; 51.7% White) from a rural western United Sta

Unhealthy life habits associated with self-induced vomiting and laxative misuse in Brazilian adolescents.

Adolescence is a stage in life characterized by important social, cognitive, and physical changes. Adolescents are vulnerable to various psychosocial disorders, including eating disorders. We aimed to investigate the association between unhealthy habits, sociodemographic characteristics, and the practice of self-induced vomiting or laxative misuse in a representative sample of Brazilian adolescent girls and boys. Data from 102,072 students who participated in the National Adolescent School-based Health Survey were analyzed using the dependent variable: presence or absence of self-induced vomit

Obesity and Eating Disorders in Children and Adolescents: The Bidirectional Link.

Obesity, eating disorders and unhealthy dieting practices among children and adolescents are alarming health concerns due to their high prevalence and adverse effects on physical and psychosocial health. We present the evidence that eating disorders and obesity can be managed or prevented using the same interventions in the pediatric age. In the presence of obesity in the pediatric age, disordered eating behaviors are highly prevalent, increasing the risk of developing eating disorders. The most frequently observed in subjects with obesity are bulimia nervosa and binge-eating disorders, both o

Impulsivity and anxiety-related dimensions in adults with bulimic-spectrum disorders differentially relate to eating disordered behaviors.

While facets of both anxiety and impulsivity appear central to the development and maintenance of bulimia nervosa (BN), specific BN behaviors may be propagated by differing profiles of risk. The current study examined associations between dimensions of anxiety and impulsivity and BN symptoms (binge eating, vomiting, laxative misuse, driven exercise), both in terms of the presence of such behaviors and their frequency. Two hundred and four women (Mage = 25.7 years) who met DSM-IV criteria for full or subthreshold BN completed self-report measures of perfectionism (Frost Multidimensional Perfect

Instagram use is linked to increased symptoms of orthorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Social media use is ever increasing amongst young adults and has previously been shown to have negative effects on body image, depression, social comparison, and disordered eating. One eating disorder of interest in this context is orthorexia nervosa, an obsession with eating healthily. High orthorexia nervosa prevalence has been found in populations who take an active interest in their health and body and is frequently comorbid with anorexia nervosa. Here, we investigate links between social media use, in particularly Instagram and orthorexia nervosa symptoms. METHODS: We conducted

Rumen fermentation, blood metabolites, and growth performance of calves during transition from liquid to solid feed: Effects of dietary level and particle size of alfalfa hay.

This study evaluated the effects of particle size (PS) and dietary level of alfalfa hay (AH) on rumen fermentation parameters, blood metabol … affect blood glucose concentrations in developing calves. These results indicate that feed intake, feeding behavior, rumen fermentation parameters, and blood β-hydroxybutyrate concentration may be affected by rations differing in forage PS; thus, providing calves with MPS can improve calf performance and reduce their nonnutritive oral behaviors.

Interactions between parents and parents and pups in the monogamous California mouse (Peromyscus californicus).

The California mouse (Peromyscuscalifornicus) may be a valuable animal model to study parenting as it is one of the few monogamous and biparental rodent species. By using automated infra-red imaging and video documentation of established pairs spanning two days prior to birth of the litter until d 5 of post natal development (PND), it was possible to follow interactions between parents and between parents and pups. The paired males were attentive to their partners in the form of grooming and sniffing throughout the time period studied. Both these and other activities of the partners, such as e

Evidence that ghrelin may be associated with the food intake of gibel carp (Carassius auratus gibelio).

Ghrelin, a non-amidated peptide hormone, is a potent anorectic neuropeptide implicated in feeding regulation in mammals and non-mammalian vertebrates. However, the involvement of ghrelin in the feeding behavior of teleosts has not been well understood. To better understand the role of ghrelin in the regulation of appetite in fish, in this study, we cloned the cDNAs encoding ghrelin and investigated their mRNA distributions in gibel carp tissues. We also assessed the effects of different nutritional status on ghrelin mRNA abundance. Ghrelin mRNAs were ubiquitously expressed in ten tissues (inte…

Intermittent peripheral exposure to lipopolysaccharide induces exploratory behavior in mice and regulates brain glial activity in obese mice.

BACKGROUND: Consecutive peripheral immune challenges can modulate the responses of brain resident microglia to stimuli. High-fat diet (HFD) intake has been reported to stimulate the activation of astrocytes and microglia in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) of the hypothalamus in obese rodents and humans. However, it is unknown whether intermittent exposure to additional peripheral immune challenge can modify HFD-induced hypothalamic glial activation in obese individuals. METHODS: In this study, we administered 1 mg/kg LPS (or saline) by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection to 8-week-old male mice after

Effects of wheat straw chop length in high-straw dry cow diets on intake, health, and performance of dairy cows across the transition period.

The study investigated the effect of chop length of wheat straw in a high-straw dry cow diet on the feeding behavior, health, and performance of Holstein dairy cows across the transition period. Forty cows were enrolled at dry off, approximately 45 d before expected calving, and assigned to 1 of 2 dietary treatments containing (on a dry matter basis) 36% corn silage, 35% dry cow pellet, and 29% wheat straw. Diets were formulated to target an energy consumption of 19 Mcal/d of net energy for lactation per cow. The diets differed in the chop length of wheat straw: (1) long straw chopped with a 1…

Psychological Treatment for Pediatric Feeding Disorder (PFD) and Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID).

OBJECTIVE: To produce a consensus statement on the psychological treatment of feeding/eating aversions seen in pediatric feeding disorder (PFD) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), diagnoses that share common symptoms and psychological mechanisms but have historically been addressed separately in the literature. METHOD: To help bridge the gaps between ARFID and PFD treatment and research, we convened a group of experts to clarify and describe the psychological interventions for treating learned food avoidance. The current manuscript summarizes the conclusions of the meeting.
