Nasal-cannula-integrated Fabry-Pérot fiber sensor for respiration-driven Morse code communication.

Spontaneous breathing offers a viable non-limb-based interaction channel for patients with severe motor impairments. However, traditional electronic monitors are often limited by electromagnetic susceptibility and bulky designs. We report a flexible, wearable human-computer interface that incorporates a miniature Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) fiber-optic sensor directly embedded within a standard nasal cannula. By measuring temperature-induced changes in cavity length, the sensor tracks exhaled airflow with high sensitivity. The sensor achieves an experimental temperature sensitivity of 0.2

Imaging Amblyopia: Insights from Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

Amblyopia refers to visual impairment resulting from perturbations in visual experience during visual development, typically secondary to strabismus, uncorrected refractive error, and/or deprivation. Amblyopia has traditionally been considered a cortical disease, but the depth of our understanding of this complex neurodevelopmental condition is limited by our ability to appreciate structural pathophysiology in the visual pathway. Recent advances in Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) have facilitated numerous studies of the structural changes in the retina and optic nerve, thereby expanding our

Wearable strain sensor integrating mechanoluminescent fiber with a flexible printed circuit.

This paper reports an optical strain sensor that integrates a self-powered mechanoluminescent (ML) elastic fiber with a flexible circuit. The inclusion of an alumina nanoparticle as the additive results in seven-fold enhancement of ML intensity while maintaining flexibility of 120% strain. The sensor facilitates the detection of strain and stretching speed. It attains a sensitivity of 0.0022 lx/(1% strain) and a resolution of 0.2% strain, respectively. We have successfully applied it to detect bending motions of the finger, wrist, and elbow. This wearable strain sensor holds promise for divers

Optical coherence tomography as a biomarker in multiple sclerosis.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that leads to axonal dysfunction and neuronal loss and often presents optic neuritis (ON). Decreased thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) is a classic finding on ophthalmoscopic examination of patients with MS and especially noted in those patients with a history of ON. The thickness of the RNFL can be measured by a non-invasive technique, optical coherence tomography (OCT). AREAS COVERED: This review will cover the history and development of the OCT technology and the advantages of a potential

In vivo chemical investigation of human skin using a confocal Raman fiber optic microprobe.

To evaluate the potential of a new in vivo confocal Raman microprobe, we undertake a pilot study in human skin. A fiber optic probe is operated with a 633-nm laser and trials are conducted in healthy volunteers. We examine changes in molecular composition and structure of the stratum corneum, from different volunteers, from different anatomical sites and skin layers. Main spectral variations are detected in the following regions: 800 to 900 cm(-1) (amino acids); 1200 to 1290 cm(-1) (proteins); and 1030 to 1130 cm(-1), 1300 to 1450 cm(-1), and 2800 to 2900 cm(-1) (lipids). Sensing parts per million levels of gaseous NO2 by a optical fiber transducer based on calix[4]arenes.

Calixarenes are interesting building blocks in supramolecular receptor design. They can be easily functionalized to give the desired guest binding and sequestration properties. We demonstrate here the use of simple alkylated calixarenes as novel NO(2) sensors. Upon reacting with gaseous NO(2), alkylated calixarenes form stable calixarene-NO(+) (nitrosonium) complexes that have a deep purple color. This specific and selective formation of the colored complex was used to develop a fiber optic based colorimetric NO(2) sensor. Several alkylated calixarenes are used and tested as sensing materials.

An antibody-free bio-layer interferometry biosensor for immunoglobulin G1 detection in human serum by using molecularly imprinted polynorepinephrine.

Bio-Layer Interferometry (BLI) has emerged as a versatile technique in affinity-based biosensing, analogous to Surface Plasmon Resonance. BLI enables real-time, label-free detection, and quantification of biomolecular interactions between an immobilized receptor and an analyte in solution. The BLI sensor comprises an optical fiber with an internal reference layer at the end and an external biocompatible layer where biological receptors are immobilized and exposed to the solution. We report the first BLI bioassay using a mimetic receptor based on molecularly imprinted polynorepinephrine (MIPNE)

[The study of opportunity of aqueous humor filtration increase after nondestructive laser exposure of sclera in the site of pars plana projection (experimental study)].

Increase of scleral water permeability due to formation of porous structure after exposure of pulsed periodic radiation of erbium-glass optical fiber laser with wave length 1,56 pm was demonstrated in experimental study of cadaver human eyes in vitro and eyes of experimental animals (rabbits) in vivo. Simultaneous complex laser exposure of pars plana and ciliary processes results in summation of morphological changes that provide decrease of aqueous humor secretion, uveal drainage and extension of suprachoroid space. A base for new noninvasive technology of nondestructive laser exposure in gla

Impressive Performance: New Disposable Digital Ureteroscope Allows for Extreme Lower Pole Access and Use of 365 μm Holmium Laser Fiber.

BACKGROUND: Since the development of the first flexible ureteroscope, in 1964, technological advances in image quality, flexibility, and deflection have led to the development of the first single-use digital flexible ureteroscope, LithoVue™ (Boston Scientific, Marlborough, MA). With respect to reusable fiber-optic and now digital ureteroscopes, there is an initial capital cost of several thousand dollars (USD) as well as, controversy regarding durability, the cost of repairs and the burdensome reprocessing steps of ureteroscopy. The single-use LithoVue eliminates the need for costly repairs, t

Near-field imaging of an ultra-confined optical field on the endface of a nanoslit waveguide.

Generation and characterization of ultra-confined optical fields are of great importance in fundamental optics and optical technologies. A dielectric nanoslit waveguide formed by a coupled nanofiber pair (CNP) can provide such a field openly accessible on its endface, exhibiting extreme confinement down to the sub-nanometer level. However, its direct imaging, which is critical for its characterization and applications, remains challenging, as such a field exists in the near field of the suspended microscale waveguide endface with ultra-small feature sizes. Here, we demonstrate the first near-f

Real-time subglottic stenosis imaging using optical coherence tomography in the rabbit.

IMPORTANCE: Subglottic stenosis (SGS) is a severe, acquired, potentially life-threatening disease that can be caused by endotracheal tube intubation. Newborns and neonates are particularly susceptible to SGS owing to the small caliber of their airway. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate optical coherence tomography (OCT) capabilities in detecting injury and scar formation using a rabbit model. Optical coherence tomography may provide a noninvasive, bedside or intensive care unit modality for the identification of early airway trauma with the intention of preventing progression to SGS and can image the

Implementation of a six-around-one optical probe based on diffuse light spectroscopy for study of cerebral properties in a murine mouse model of autism spectrum disorder.

Light reflectance spectroscopy (LRS) is a multispectral technique, sensitive to the absorption and scattering properties of biological molecules in tissues. It is used as a noninvasive tool to extract quantitative physiological information from human tissues and organs. A near-infrared LRS based on a single optical probe was used to monitor changes in optical and hemodynamic parameters in a mouse model of autism. A murine model of autism induced by developmental exposure to valproic acid (VPA) was used. Since autism could be attributed to neuroanatomical changes, we hypothesize that these chan
