This study intended to examine the impact of TD on adult psychosocial functioning. A 29-item self-report questionnaire was mailed to 180 former and current adult TD patients. Adult TD patients reported relatively good psychosocial adjustment although many continued to be dependent upon their families for living and financial support. For adults with TD, personal acceptance and medication use were the most important factors in coping with the disorder. The severity of vocal tics had a much greater influence on adult functioning than the severity of motor tics. Although TD continued to interfere…

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) shaped the basic development and direction of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program through technical support and financial assistance for State and local health departments and other organizations. Through this provision of support, CDC has responded to the course of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic by creating programs to preserve the safety of the blood supply, by developing counseling and testing centers, by promoting "safer sex," by promoting health education and risk reduction, by evaluating existing

Family caregivers (FCs) of a patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) can encounter unpredictable challenges and care demands. They can experience high levels of burden, a loss of self-care, and poor quality of life. Their receipt of social support and ability to communicate with clinicians may impact their burden. FCs would benefit from educational resources that teach them communication skills central to their ability to obtain the support they need-support that is imperative to reducing burden. To better target psychosocial educational interventions focused on social support and comm

In this personal essay, I recount my lived experience of childhood tuberculosis, highlighting the physical, emotional, and psychological toll on myself and my family. I reflect on how tuberculosis care has since improved, but also how certain critical gaps persist, especially the challenges of inadequate financial support, post-recovery social reintegration, and insufficient psychological care for persons with tuberculosis. Drawing from my experience, I advocate measures to address stigma, invisible costs, and discrimination. Holistic care for tuberculosis must go beyond just medical recovery …

The patient authors with over 48 years of combined real-world experience with chronic myeloid leukemia, and a healthcare professional, use their own personal experiences to describe the factors that may affect the patien-doctor relationship, patient care and outcomes. The authors believe that this podcast series and associated manuscript will aid both patients and healthcare professionals to improve their patient-doctor relationships and communication through diagnosis, treatment decision-making and learning to live with CML (or another disease). The Ministry of Health, through the Primary Health Care Secretariat and in partnership with the Secretariat of Health Surveillance, built and implemented Primary Health Care (PHC) strategies within the scope of support to local managers and in partnership with the National Health Secretaries Council (CONASS) and the National Municipal Health Secretariats Council (CONASEMS) to combat COVID-19. Advances in clinical information sciences, telecommunication technologies, electronic health records, early warning systems, automated acuity assessment, and clinician communication support systems have allowed current-generation intensive care (ICU) telemedicine systems to address the inefficiencies of the failed advice-upon-request ICU telemedicine model. Value is related to the ability of health care systems to leverage ICU telemedicine resources to provide care. Local financial benefits of ICU telemedicine program implementation depend on changing behavior to better focus on activities tha

The development of surgical capacity in the developing world is essential to address the global burden of surgical disease. Training local surgeons in low-income and middle-income countries is critical in this endeavor. The challenges to teaching hand surgery in the developing world include a shortage of local faculty, absence of a defined curriculum, no competency-based evaluation systems, few subspecialty training opportunities, and lack of financial support. To teach hand surgery in the developing world effectively, the authors suggest principles and components of a global training curricul…

In recent years in-vitro and in-vivo studies have greatly advanced our understanding of the action of antimicrobial agents and have opened new potential avenues for treatment of infectious diseases. Unfortunately, little interest or financial support has been available to test these observations in rigid, controlled clinical studies. New regimens have thus been used without proof of increased efficacy of reduced toxicity over old regimens. Carefully controlled clinical trials are particularly needed to evaluate the efficacy, toxicity, and cost of newly developed regimens in the therapy of chro…

Background: This study examines the implications of formulary drug tier systems on the accessibility and affordability of medications for the elderly/geriatric population within the New York metropolitan area. By systematically reviewing the Medicare insurance formularies and evaluating the most prescribed medicines with reported beneficial outcomes for ailments frequently experienced by the geriatric population, this research identifies disparities in drug tier placements and the cost of dispensing that may affect patient outcomes. The focus is on five prevalent conditions: Alzheimer's dement

The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated hunger levels in South Africa, with an increase from 10% pre-pandemic to 23% during the pandemic. Pre-pandemic national and global research identified university students to be more vulnerable to hunger compared to the general population. This elevated risk is commonly associated with prevalent financial mismanagement in this group. However, research investigating the prevalence of hunger during the pandemic among this at-risk group is limited. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the prevalence and determinants of hunger among students at a South Africa

AIMS: This study investigates how continuous exposure to psychosocial and material factors influences self-rated health (SRH) trajectories in different income groups, uniquely contrasting two mechanisms from a life course perspective: accumulation, where disadvantages intensify with longer exposure, and adaptation, where individuals adjust to adverse conditions.
METHODS: Based on the German Socio-Economic Panel (1994-2017), we analyzed data from 31,961 women and 29,149 men (18-75 years; ⩾2 observations). Psychosocial and material factors (e.g. financial/occupational worries, housing/income di

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) significantly affects patients' quality of life (QoL) due to its physical, cognitive, and psychological consequences. Despite increasing TBI incidents, advancements in medical care have improved survival rates, raising the need to understand the economic burden and its impact on QoL.
PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the impact of living cost on the QoL of patients with moderate and severe TBI.
METHOD: The study involved patients aged 18-70 years hospitalized at the General Hospital KAT in Athens, Greece, with moderate and severe TBI. QoL was

Community-based facilities delivering HIV services to key populations often face significant operational and financial challenges, making the quality of management in these organizations particularly important. A growing body of evidence links management quality to health facility performance. However, research on management in health facilities has focused largely on structural characteristics and formal qualifications, with less attention to the non-cognitive characteristics of managers themselves, particularly personality traits. This is a cross-sectional, quantitative analysis of 45 facili

Objective: Cognitive intraindividual variability (IIV) reflects fluctuations in cognitive test performance, which may be associated with poorer everyday functioning. This study adopted a retrospective conceptual replication approach to determine whether higher IIV dispersion is associated with poorer financial management skills. Method: Study 1 participants were 112 adults with (n = 76) and without (n = 36) HIV who completed an in-person assessment that included the Cogstate battery, the Web-based Evaluation of Banking Skills (WEBS), and the UCSD Performance-Based Skills Assessment Brief Versi
