Electron microscopy of rat lung following a single acute exposure to perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB). A sequential study of the first 24 hours following exposure.

The histopathology of rat lung has been studied after an acute exposure to perfluoroisobutylene (PFIB) at a concentration of 638 mg/m3 (78 p.p.m.) for 1.5 min giving a Ct = 957 mg min/m3 for the first 24 h following exposure. Within 5 min of exposure changes to the bronchioles and peribronchial alveoli were observed which took the form of alterations to cilial structure, increased pinocytosis and electron lucency, with occasional vesicle formation of type I alveolar epithelial cells. Intercellular leakage with minimal fluid accumulation in the alveolar spaces was also seen. The very rapid acti

Machine learning-based in silico quantification framework for non-targeted PFAS in complex vegetable matrices.

High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) is a powerful tool for the comprehensive identification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, the lack of reference standards and interference from complex matrices (such as vegetables) pose significant challenges for accurate quantification of non-targeted PFAS, hindering the assessment of their environmental fate and exposure to humans. Therefore, the present study established a machine learning combined with internal standards (ML-IS) model on HRMS instruments to achieve accurate quantification of PFAS in Shanghai cabbage (Brassica

Hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA) exposure predisposes to MASLD through reprogramming hepatic epigenome and transcriptome.

Substitute for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), like hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acid (HFPO-TA), are sparking growing environmental and health worries because of their persistence and capacity for bioaccumulation. Here, we employed an integrated multi-omics approach to systematically investigate HFPO-TA-induced hepatic lipid metabolic dysregulation in zebrafish. Exposed to a series of concentrations (0, 5, 50, 500 μg/L) of HFPO-TA induced hepatic lipid accumulation and significantly elevated serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol

Application-dependent effects of tea waste biochar on PFAS mobility and N2O and CH4 emissions in agricultural soil.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in agricultural soils can migrate into crops and may alter soil greenhouse gas emissions, yet remediation strategies rarely address these risks simultaneously. This study evaluated tea waste biochar (TWB) produced at 400, 500, and 600 °C and applied at 5-20 g per pot by whole-soil mixing or surface-layer placement in a simulated PFAS-contaminated soil-leachate-plant system. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) distributions, nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) fluxes, and microbial responses were examined. TWB produced

Global distribution of PFAS and their impacts on microbial greenhouse gas emission and mechanisms.

PER: and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) widely distributed in environments, which overlaps with greenhouse gas (GHGs) emission hotspots. This review summarizes impacts of PFAS on microbial emission of three typical GHGs (CH4, N2O, and CO2), regional response patterns, and underlying mechanisms. The emission of N2O is the most sensitive, followed by CH4, while CO2 follows a "stimulation at low dose and inhibition at high dose" pattern with sensitivity depending on environmental medium. Mixed PFAS complicate response in real world, and real-world PFAS

Time-dependent size stability and shell behaviors of lipid-coated microbubbles.

Microbubbles are excellent contrast-enhancing agents for ultrasound imaging. A long shelf life with a robust size distribution is critical for their efficacy. Here, we investigated the long-term stability and attenuation of a custom-made polydisperse microbubble suspension. The microbubbles were prepared using mechanical agitation with a gas core of perfluorobutane (C4F10), and a 9:1 molar ratio mixture of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero3-phosphatidylethanolamine-polyethyleneglycol-2000 (DPPE-PEG2000) lipids. Their size distribution and at

Metabolomic signatures of prenatal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance exposure and subtypes of gestational diabetes mellitus: A prospective cohort study.

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a heterogeneous pregnancy complication comprising insulin-resistant and insulin-deficient subtypes with distinct pathophysiology. Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been implicated in gestational glucose disturbances, yet congener-specific effects on subtypes of GDM and underlying metabolic mechanisms remain unknown. In the Shanghai Birth Cohort, 1789 women had plasma concentrations of 9 PFAS congeners and untargeted serum metabolomics measured in early pregnancy, and GDM subtypes were defined at 24-28 weeks' gestation usi

Redefining the competitive paradigm: influence of co-occurring ions on PFAS adsorption from polluted water onto granular activated carbon and anion exchange resin.

The effects of four inorganic ions: magnesium chloride (MgCl2), potassium nitrate (KNO3), sodium phosphate (Na2PO4), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), and three organic ions: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), and humic acid (HA) on the adsorption behaviour of five per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) with varying chain lengths (C5-C11) were systematically investigated using granular activated carbon (GAC) and anion exchange resin (AER). Pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic modelling showed adsorption capacities (qₑ) ranged from 1.11 to 6.89 mg/g and 4.67 to 8.

Comparative phytotoxicity of PFOS and its substitute OBS in mulberry and implications for a mulberry-silkworm exposure system.

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a persistent perfluoroalkyl substance known to exert adverse effects on soil and terrestrial ecosystems. However, the toxicological risks of its substitutes, particularly sodium p-perfluorinated nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS), and their impacts on perennial plants and food-chain transfer remain insufficiently understood. Here, mulberry (Morus alba) seedlings were used as a model perennial species to compare the phytotoxic effects of PFOS and OBS. PFOS exerted markedly stronger inhibitory effects than OBS, as evidenced by significant reductions in plant

Prenatal PFAS exposure and offspring health: evidence review and implications for intergenerational risk assessment.

Prenatal exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represents a critical developmental concern because several PFAS cross the placenta and may perturb biological programming during sensitive windows. Although epidemiological and experimental studies have linked prenatal exposure to several measured PFAS, primarily legacy perfluoroalkyl acids such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), Perfluorohexane Sulfonic Acid (PFHxS), and Perfluorononanoic Acid (PFNA), to diverse offspring outcomes, the strength of evidence differs substantially across compound

PFAS exposure and reproductive dysfunction: implications for outcomes in assisted reproductive technologies.

The high stability and bioaccumulation potential of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have led to their widespread environmental presence and raised concerns about human health exposure through multiple pathways. In particular, PFAS exposure during assisted reproductive technology (ART) has attracted increasing attention from the scientific community. Current evidence indicates that PFAS may be associated with diminished fertility, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and impaired fetal health, although the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely elucidated. Emerging studies suggest that the

Association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl exposures and postpartum psychological symptoms: Evidence from two population-based pregnancy cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) may be associated with mother's postpartum psychological symptoms. We examined such in two population-based pregnancy cohorts. METHODS: Using liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry, we measured untargeted serum PFAS at 1 month postpartum (PROGRESS cohort) and targeted plasma PFAS at 32 gestation weeks (BiSC cohort). Postpartum depression (PPD) was assessed with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS≥10) from 1 to 24 months postpartum. Poisson regression assessed the association betw
