Visualization of drug translocation in the nasal cavity and pharmacokinetic analysis on nasal drug absorption using positron emission tomography in the rat.

We performed positron emission tomography (PET) using 2-deoxy-2-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose ([(18)F]FDG) to evaluate the pharmacokinetics of nasal drug absorption in the rat. The dosing solution of [(18)F]FDG was varied in volume (ranging from 5 to 25 μl) and viscosity (using 0% to 3% concentrations of hydroxypropylcellulose). We modeled the pharmacokinetic parameters regarding the nasal cavity and pharynx using mass balance equations, and evaluated the values that were obtained by fitting concentration-time profiles using WinNonlin® software. The regional nasal permeability was also estimated usi

Non-invasive quantification of brain [¹⁸F]-FDG uptake by combining medical health records and dynamic PET imaging data.

Quantification of regional cerebral metabolic rate of glucose (rCMRglu) via positron emission tomography (PET) imaging requires measuring the arterial input function (AIF) via invasive arterial blood sampling. In this study we describe a non-invasive approach, the non-invasive simultaneous estimation (nSIME), for the estimation of rCMRglu that considers a pharmacokinetic input function model and constraints derived from machine learning applied to a fusion of individual medical health records and dynamic [(18)F]-FDG-PET brain images data. The results obtained with our data indicate potential f

Arterial input function sampling without surgery in rats for positron emission tomography molecular imaging.

AIM: The purpose of this study was to develop a minimally invasive procedure to derive an arterial input function (AIF) in rats through tail artery blood sampling for pharmacokinetic modeling in preclinical PET molecular imaging studies. The procedure involved a microvolumetric blood counter (μBC) and a correction to compensate for delay and dispersion of the automatic blood sampling. MATERIALS AND METHODS: AIFs were simultaneously obtained from femoral and tail arteries in rats, manually and using a μBC, after (18)F-FDG injection (n=6) in order to compare the shape of the AIFs and the kineti

Evaluation of thymic tumors with 18F-FDG PET-CT: a pictorial review.

Thymic tumors represent a broad spectrum of neoplastic disorders and pose considerable diagnostic difficulties. A non-invasive imaging study to determine the nature of thymic lesions can have significant impact on management of such tumors. 18F-flurorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) has shown promising results in characterization of thymic tumors. The objective of this article is to provide an illustrative tutorial highlighting the clinical utility of 18F-FDG PET-CT imaging in patients with thymic tumors. We have pictorially depicted the 18F-FDG

A case report of intrapulmonary schwannoma.

A 38-year-old man without any symptoms was admitted to our institution because of an abnormal shadow found incidentally on a chest X-ray. Chest computed tomography showed a round mass in the lingular segment of the left upper lobe. Lingular segmentectomy was performed, and the histopathological diagnosis was intrapulmonary schwannoma. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a positive result for S-100 protein and negative results for CD34 and desmin. We report this case of intrapulmonary schwannoma, which is extremely rare.

Clinical value of 2-deoxy-[18F]fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography in patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is one of the most common spinal cord disorders in the elderly. It is usually diagnosed by MRI, but in a significant number of patients the clinical course of CSM does not correlate with the extent of the spinal cord compression. Recent studies have suggested that a distinct metabolic pattern of the cervical cord, as assessed by PET with 2-deoxy-[(18)F]fluoro-D-glucose ((18)F-FDG) may predict a patient's clinical outcome after decompressive surgery for cervical spine stenosis. The authors provide an overview of the recent literature regarding the value of

Accumulation of F-18 FDG in the infected pulmonary cyst in a patient with hydatid disease.

Echinococcosis is endemic in certain parts of the world, including Turkey. When the pulmonary cyst has characteristic features, it can be easily diagnosed, but when the appearance changes as a result of complications, the cyst may resemble a malignant lesion. We presented a complicated pulmonary hydatid disease patient who was referred to our department for PET-CT, after the detection of 2 lung lesions.

An unusual unilocular mesothelial cyst of the pleura: a case report.

A 79-year-old woman was found to have an abnormal shadow on chest radiography. Computed tomography demonstrated a pleural mass. The F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) was performed to determine whether the pleural mass was benign or malignant. The histologic examination of the resected mass showed a unilocular mesothelial cyst of the pleura. The FDG PET findings of a mesothelial cyst of the pleura have not yet been previously reported. The FDG PET findings of a mesothelial cyst in the pleura reflected the microscopic findings of the resected mass. The FDG PET findin

[(18)F]2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose PET/CT in mediastinal masses.

Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are excellent modalities for the localization of mediastinal masses and there are often features that may allow the correct diagnosis to be made. However, CT and MRI cannot usually assess the aggressiveness of masses or identify viable tumour in residual masses after chemotherapy. Metabolic imaging using [(18)F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography/CT, although not required in many cases, may be helpful for further characterization of masses and to guide the most appropriate site for biopsy.

F-18 FDG PET/CT in an adult case of group B streptococcal sacroiliitis.

An adult patient presented with acute severe pelvic and low-back pain. Evaluations with CT and MRI were negative/inconclusive. F-18 FDG PET/CT localized the site of pathology in right sacroiliac-joint by demonstrating hypermetabolic activities conformal with the joint's outline, signifying infectious/inflammatory sacroiliitis. Blood culture was positive for Group B streptococcus (GBS). Antibiotic treatment was started within 24 hours from onset of symptoms, and there was almost immediate partial pain relief. GBS sacroiliitis is a rare form of septic sacroiliitis requiring prompt diagnosis and

[The role and limitations of FDG-PET in head and neck cancer].

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) is a nuclear medicine imaging technique which has been increasingly applied as a diagnostic tool. The usefulness of FDG-PET may be described as follows: I . Early detection of cancer; II. Diagnosis of cancer; III. Detection of nodal or distant metastasis, and double cancer; IV. Detection of unknown primary tumor with metastatic neck lesions; and V. Evaluation of treatment of head and neck cancer. FDG-PET is especially useful to detect distant metastasis, double cancer with head and neck cancer and unknown primary tumor with metastat

FDG-PET in inflammatory bowel disease.

Accurate, inexpensive, non-invasive studies in evaluation of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) would represent a significant advancement in identifying and measuring disease activity. There is new evidence that positron emission tomography (PET) scanning can fulfill many of these criteria. The aim of this review is to report the studies pertaining to the use of PET in IBD and provide an evidence-based approach on how to use PET clinically in IBD. Searching Medline and the Cochrane Database of Clinical Trails on July 18, 2008 identified 12 relevant manuscripts for review. Types of studies of PET

Asymptomatic thymic carcinoma with solitary hepatic metastasis detected by fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography.

Thymic carcinoma is a rare anterior mediastinal malignancy. Most patients present initially with chest pain, cough or dyspnea. Asymptomatic patients account for less than one third of the total cases. Thymic carcinoma is aggressive and tends to metastasize to the lymph nodes, lungs, and bones, and less commonly to the liver, spleen, brain, and adrenal glands. We present a 49-year-old man who received abdominal ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging for a health checkup, during which, a necrotic hepatic tumor was found incidentally. Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography was p

Reduced thalamic 18F-flurodeoxyglucose retention in adults with neurofibromatosis type 1.

OBJECTIVE: Neurofibromatosis type1 (NF1) is associated with cognitive and motor deficits whose pathogenesis is not well understood. 18F-Flurodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) might be used to investigate putative functional correlates in the brain. METHODS: Whole-body FDG PET including the brain had been performed in 29 NF1 patients suspected for malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumours (20 females, nine males, age 31.2+/-11.8 years). Twenty-nine age-matched and sex-matched subjects without evidence of neurological/psychiatric disease in whom FDG PET had been performed for

A doughnut sign of a hydatid cyst of the liver on F-18 FDG PET/CT.

A 59-year-old man underwent a whole-body PET/CT scan to evaluate the metabolic activity of a nodule in the upper lobe of the left lung seen on CT. Slightly increased peripheral activity with a large hypometabolic region centrally, a so-called doughnut sign, was seen in the right lobe of the liver. After the diagnosis of a hydatid cyst of the liver, the patient underwent surgery. This case demonstrates a hydatid cyst that caused increased F-18 FDG uptake as a doughnut pattern.

[Thymic carcinoid tumor revealed by a Cushing's syndrome: usefulness of positron emission tomography].

Ectopic adrenocorticotropic (ACTH) syndrome is a rare condition, generally due to lung or carcinoid tumors. 18-fluorodeoxy-glucose positron emission tomography ((18)FDG-PET) can be useful where conventional localization techniques often fail. A 50-year-old man presented with sudden diffuse oedema, hypokaliemic alkalosis, Diabetes mellitus and high serum levels of ACTH and cortisol. Ectopic ACTH syndrome was confirmed leading to ketoconazole treatment. Chest-computed tomography only revealed an aspecific anterior mediastinal nodule that was hypermetabolic on the whole body-(18)FDG-PET. A thymic
