PURPOSE: Describe the clinical presentations of orbital complications of acute sinusitis and discuss therapeutic approaches.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 29 cases of acute sinusitis with orbital extension hospitalized over a period of 12years (2000 to 2012).
RESULTS: There were 23 men and 6 women. The mean age was 15.75years. The average time until consultation was 7.68 days. Sinusitis was ethmoido-maxillary in 20 cases, ethmoidal in 6 cases, and frontal in 3 cases. Orbital extension was grouped according to the Chandler classification: stage I (3 cases), stage II (3 cases), stage III (15

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the olfactory fossa depths and lateral lamella lengths of patients with different types of developmental disorders of paranasal sinuses in comparison with normal controls.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective, archival, radio-anatomical study.
METHODS: We included 58 patients with maxillary sinus hypoplasia, 50 patients with frontal sinus hypoplasia/aplasia, 50 patients with sphenoid sinus hypoplasia/aplasia, and 40 normal controls. Reviewing paranasal computerized tomography scans, we noted the olfactory fossa depths and lateral lamella lengths of all the groups and compar

The article presents radiological signs of basal processes (arachnoiditis, arachnoencephalitis) associated with paranasal sinusitis. gamma-Topography of the brain in inflammatory processes is distinguished by such typical radiological signs as a pathological accumulation of a radiopharmaceutical which is more often diffuse in nature. According to the findings of radionuclide cysternography the inflammatory process is characterized by a block of the subarachnoidal space of the frontobasal portions and an impairment of the CSF dynamics.

Intraorbital foreign bodies (IOrbFB) are associated with both sight and life threatening injuries. We report a case of an IOrbFB associated with retrobulbar hemorrhage and injury of the frontal sinus in an 11 year-old boy, after history of fall from the tree. Imaging studies revealed a metallic foreign body (FB) in the orbit and fracture of the walls of the frontal sinus. The usual entry route of an IOrbFB is either through the eye or orbital walls and extremely rare through the paranasal sinuses. This is the first reported case of a FB entering the orbit through the frontal sinus.

Fibrous dysplasia of the cranial air sinuses is rarely reported in the literature. This is the first report of frontal lobe abscess (FLA) associated with fibrous dysplasia of the frontal sinus (FDFS). A 29-year-old female presented with seizures and acute confusion. Cranial computed tomography (CT) revealed fibrous dysplasia of the left frontal sinus and associated FLA. She was referred to the neurosurgical service and the abscess and dysplastic tissue were removed. Histological examination confirmed fibrous dysplasia. We review the radiological appearance of FDFS with FLA. Clinicians should b

The frontal skull base represents an important barrier between the intracranial structures and the nasal sinuses preventing rhinoliquorrhea, ascending infections and brain prolaps. We reconstructed complete frontal skull base defects after interdisziplinary oncosurgery using a "Galea Periost – Calvaria Split – Sandwich (GAP-CAS) technique" with one half of the galea frontalis myofasccial flap torn to the nasal cavity, in-between the bone graft with the other half of the galea flap on top. By this technique it was possible to sufficiently cover the frontal skull base preventing cerebrospinal flu

BACKGROUND: Sphenoid and frontal sinuses have narrow ostia and are prone to stenosis. However, their relative rates of patency are not well established, and descriptive rates of sphenoid stenosis have never been reported. The objective is to measure the patency of the sphenoid and frontal sinus ostia postoperatively.
METHODS: A prospective multi-institutional cohort study was performed. Ostial patency was measured at surgery and 3 and 6 months postoperatively. Pertinent clinical history such as the presence of nasal polyps and prior history of ESS as well as the use of steroid eluting stents

INTRODUCTION: Pott's puffy tumor (PPT) is a rare complication of sinusitis and is defined as a subperiosteal abscess with frontal bone osteomyelitis. Intracranial and orbital complications occur frequently.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old Senegalese male presented with febrile headache and right frontal swelling. Computed tomography (CT) revealed frontal empyema, orbital cellulitis, pansinusitis, venous sinus thrombosis, and septic pulmonary emboli. Despite antibiotic treatment, he required sinus exclusion, ethmoidectomy, and neurosurgical drainage. Cultures grew Haemophilus influenzae, Pseu

BACKGROUND: Pott's Puffy tumor (PPT) is a complicated frontal sinusitis that is also described as frontal bone osteomyelitis and a localized sub periosteal abscess. Early diagnosis and immediate active treatment are necessary to prevent severe neurologic sequelae.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here, we report on a case of Pott's puffy tumor in a previously healthy 13-year-old girl with a worsening headache and swelling of the frontal bone accompanied by vomiting and fever. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed osteomyelitis of the frontal bone. A foreign body was discovered and removed via endoscopy which…

OBJECTIVE: Osteomyelitis of the frontal bone is a rare but devastating complication of frontal sinusitis. Treatment involves aggressive surgery to remove all sequestra in combination with long-term antibiotic therapy. However, systemic antibiotics may struggle to penetrate any remaining infection in devascularised areas, and the morbidity associated with surgical resection of some areas of the skull base is too high. In contrast, locally implanted antibiotics provide a reliable, high concentration of treatment to these areas while also minimising potential systemic side effects. The clinical a…

Potts puffy tumour (PPT) is a subperiosteal abscess arising from frontal bone osteomyelitis. We present a case of a 75-year-old lady with headache and a forehead swelling who was initially treated for sinusitis and giant cell arteritis in a primary care setting, but failed to improve. Following clinical deterioration and further investigation, CT appearances were consistent with a diagnosis of PPT and an extra-axial collection. Needle decompression, frontal trephine and endoscopic frontal sinusotomy were performed and intraoperative swabs cultured Streptococcus constellatus PPT is an unusual c

Pott's puffy tumour (PPT) is characterised by a subperiosteal abscess associated with osteomyelitis of the frontal bone-a rare complication of frontal sinusitis, more common in the paediatric population. We describe a case mimicking PPT, where abscess extension was facilitated by previous surgery. Usually patients with PPT would be systemically unwell, but our patient, a 63-year-old Caucasian man, was systemically well with a large swelling of his forehead. A CT was performed to evaluate possible intracranial and intracerebral complications such as epidural, subdural and brain abscesses. Emerg…
