Genotype is an important determinant factor of host susceptibility to periodontitis in the Collaborative Cross and inbred mouse populations.

BACKGROUND: Periodontal infection (Periodontitis) is a chronic inflammatory disease, which results in the breakdown of the supporting tissues of the teeth. Previous epidemiological studies have suggested that resistance to chronic periodontitis is controlled to some extent by genetic factors of the host. The aim of this study was to determine the phenotypic response of inbred and Collaborative Cross (CC) mouse populations to periodontal bacterial challenge, using an experimental periodontitis model. In this model, mice are co-infected with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum,

Septic sialoadenitis in equids: a retrospective study of 18 cases (1998-2010).

REASON FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Septic sialoadenitis, although uncommonly reported in equids, is a significant cause of pain, inappetence, dysphagia and discomfort. There are currently few reported cases possibly as a result of its infrequent occurrence. OBJECTIVES: To review cases presenting with sialoadenitis and describe the presenting complaints, results of diagnostic tests, treatment and outcome. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: Records were reviewed for equids presenting to the UC Davis William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital between 1998 and 2010 for s

Gut microbiota profiling in injection drug users with and without HIV-1 infection in Puerto Rico.

INTRODUCTION: The full extent of interactions between human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, injection drug use, and the human microbiome is unclear. In this study, we examined the microbiomes of HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals, both drug-injecting and non-injecting, to identify bacterial community changes in response to HIV and drug use. We utilized a well-established cohort of people who inject drugs in Puerto Rico, a region with historically high levels of injection drug use and an HIV incidence rate disproportionately associated with drug use. METHODS: Using amplicon-base

The connection between ruptured cerebral aneurysms and odontogenic bacteria.

BACKGROUND: Patients with ruptured saccular intracranial aneurysms have excess long-term mortality due to cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases compared with general population. Chronic inflammation is detected in ruptured intracranial aneurysms, abdominal aortic aneurysms and coronary artery plaques. Bacterial infections have been suggested to have a role in the aetiology of atherosclerosis. Bacteria have been detected both in abdominal and coronary arteries but their presence in intracranial aneurysms has not yet been properly studied. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this preliminary study was

Uncultivated bacteria as etiologic agents of intra-amniotic inflammation leading to preterm birth.

Intra-amniotic infection and inflammation are major causes of preterm birth (PTB). However, intra-amniotic inflammation is often detected in the absence of infection. This may partly be due to the culturing methods employed in hospital laboratories, which are unable to detect the uncultivated species. In this study, intra-amniotic microbial infections associated with PTB were examined by both culture and 16S rRNA-based culture-independent methods and were corroborated by the presence of intra-amniotic inflammation. Amniotic fluid (AF) specimens from 46 pregnancies complicated by PTB and 16 asy

The role of bacteriological studies in the management of peritonsillar abscess.

OBJECTIVE: Since most patients with peritonsillar abscess (PTA) can be successfully treated with surgical drainage and empirical antibiotic therapy, routine bacteriologic studies for all patients with PTA may be unnecessary. This study tried to evaluate which patients with PTA should certainly undergo bacteriologic studies. METHODS: Hundred consecutive patients with PTA were treated and underwent culture tests of purulent contents obtained by surgical drainage between April 2008 and December 2013. RESULTS: In 62 of the 100 patients, 71 pathogenic bacteria were identified; 61 (86%) were Gram-

Neonatal Lemierre Syndrome: Youngest Reported Case and Literature Review.

A previously healthy 5-week-old female was admitted for sepsis secondary to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia. After several days of hospitalization, she experienced acute decompensation in mental status despite having received targeted antibiotic therapy. Imaging revealed left peritonsillar/parapharyngeal space abscess, left venous thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein, and septic emboli of the lungs and brain consistent with Lemierre syndrome. Bedside needle aspiration of the parapharyngeal abscess confirmed MRSA involvement. Unfortunately, the patient con

Intracranial and internal jugular vein thrombosis secondary to ENT infections: a report of 3 cases.

We report 3 cases of rare, life-threatening intracranial and internal jugular vein (IJV) thrombosis that were caused by common ENT infections. These infections included otitis media in a 6-year-old girl, tonsillitis in a 21-year-old woman, and odontogenic sepsis in a 56-year-old woman. All 3 patients were treated with culture-directed systemic antibiotics; 2 of them also required surgical drainage (the child and the older adult). The 2 adults also received therapeutic anticoagulation, which was continued until venous recanalization was documented; the duration of combined antibiotic and antico

Dural enhancement and thickening in acute mastoiditis.

Dural enhancement and thickening in imaging studies observed in acute mastoiditis patients is an uncommon phenomenon. It is infrequently seen in dural sinus thrombosis, and may be caused by infiltration of inflammatory cells and an increased number of thin-walled blood vessels. We present a three-year-old boy who presented with acute mastoiditis, complicated by subperiosteal abscess. Computerized tomography (CT) demonstrated subperiosteal abscess, and the child underwent mastoidectomy. Despite adequate treatment, symptoms worsened and neurological sequelae were suspected. CT and magnetic reson

Isolation of Porphyromonas gingivalis strain from tubal-ovarian abscess.

An unusual case of involvement of Porphyromonas gingivalis is described. Two anaerobic isolates, identified as Fusobacterium nucleatum and P. gingivalis, were recovered from the pus of a tubal-ovarian abscess in a 35-year-old woman. Identification of the P. gingivalis isolate was confirmed by randomly amplified polymorphic DNA fingerprinting.

Human Primary Epithelial Cells Acquire an Epithelial-Mesenchymal-Transition Phenotype during Long-Term Infection by the Oral Opportunistic Pathogen, Porphyromonas gingivalis.

Porphyromonas gingivalis is a host-adapted oral pathogen associated with chronic periodontitis that successfully survives and persists in the oral epithelium. Recent studies have positively correlated periodontitis with increased risk and severity of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Intriguingly, the presence of P. gingivalis enhances tumorigenic properties independently of periodontitis and has therefore been proposed as a potential etiological agent for OSCC. However, the initial host molecular changes induced by P. gingivalis infection which promote predisposition to cancerous transform

DDIT3 inhibition by salvianolic acid B mitigates Fusobacterium nucleatum-mediated chemoresistance to 5-fluorouracil in colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND: Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn) drives chemotherapy resistance in colorectal cancer (CRC) by activating hypoxia-mimicking signaling pathways, yet the molecular mechanisms linking Fn to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) resistance remain unclear. We investigated how Fn-induced hypoxia-related gene expression contributes to 5-FU resistance and identified a pharmacological strategy to overcome it. METHODS: DEGs from Fn-infected CRC cells (GSE90944) were intersected with GSEA hypoxia-related genes, and Cox regression on TCGA-CRC data prioritized the top candidate, DDIT3. Its role in 5-FU resistance

Lemierre's Syndrome in a Commercial Airline Pilot.

BACKGROUND: Lemierre's syndrome (LS) is a rare, life-threatening complication of an acute oropharyngeal infection. It is commonly associated with pharyngitis caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum, which can lead to septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. Subsequently, septic emboli usually form, which can metastasize to the liver, lungs, endocardium, and joints. The role of anticoagulation in LS remains debated and there is no universal consensus on best practice. CASE REPORT: A 39-yr-old commercial pilot, flying air cargo operations in Australia, presented to the emergency depart

Self-Regulated ROS Nanoplatform Enables Sequential Antibacterial Therapy and Inflammation Resolution in Periodontitis.

Infection-associated inflammatory diseases such as periodontitis are driven not only by persistent bacterial biofilms but also by dysregulated host immune responses amplified by excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS). Although antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (PDT) efficiently eradicates pathogens, uncontrolled ROS accumulation often aggravates inflammation and impairs tissue repair, limiting its clinical translation. Here, we report a self-regulated ROS nanoplatform based on a one-dimensional porphyrin-diketopyrrolopyrrole covalent organic framework (COF) loaded with the natural flavonoid
