Adverse pregnancy outcomes near landfill sites in Cumbria, northwest England, 1950--1993.

Although several researchers have addressed the risk of congenital anomaly in relation to proximity to landfill sites, few have considered the risks of stillbirth or neonatal death for mothers who reside near landfills. The authors studied all 4,325 stillbirths, 3,430 neonatal deaths, and 1,569 lethal congenital anomalies that occurred among 287,993 births to mothers residing in Cumbria, northwest England, during the years 1950 to 1993. Logistic regression models, with data stratified by time period and adjusted for subject-specific demographic factors, were used to investigate the risk for ea

New geographical approaches to control of some parasitic zoonoses.

The advent of new technology for geographical representation and spatial analysis of databases from different sectors offers a new approach to planning and managing the control of tropical diseases. This article reviews the geographical and intersectoral aspects of the epidemiology and control of African trypanosomiasis, cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, schistosomiasis, and foodborne trematode infections. The focal nature of their transmission, increasing recognition of the importance of animal reservoirs, and the need to understand environmental factors influencing their

Species with U-shaped geographic ranges as an opportunity to study early stages of divergence: The case of Ipomoea microsepala.

PREMISE: The study of the early stages of divergence between populations is crucial to understanding how species and biodiversity originate. Geographic distributions that capture some aspects of the process of divergence, such as those that are markedly U-shaped, could offer a window to identify systems undergoing incipient speciation, which have traditionally been difficult to identify. METHODS: We selected Ipomoea microsepala, a species of morning-glory with a markedly U-shaped distribution, as a candidate to evaluate potential incipient evolutionary divergence. We used a combination of pri

Climate´s effect on dengue geographical distribution and scenarios from climatic change projections in Cuba: essential elements for a bioclimatic warning system.

INTRODUCTION: A progressive increase in vector-borne infectious diseases is expected in the face of climate variability exacerbated by climate change. Tropical climate conditions favor the proliferation of Aedes aegypti, causing greater risk of dengue spreading. Therefore, taking action to adapt health systems to climate change is a priority. The objective of this study is to determine the geographic distribution of dengue and to projecti its potential changes associated with the impact of climate variability and change. METHODS: An ecological study conducted by combining time series and spat

Expert knowledge elicitation to determine the relative importance of potentially foodborne parasitic diseases in Armenia.

Reliable prioritization of foodborne parasitic diseases is challenging in settings where routine surveillance and attribution data are limit … were analysed using rank-based non-parametric methods, and regional patterns were visualized using geographic information systems. Ascariasis and echinococcosis were consistently ranked as the highest-priority foodborne parasitic diseases, clearly separated from all others. Giardiasis ranked third, while fascioliasis, toxoplasmosis, and trichinellosis formed a moderate-priorit …

Digital Survey-Based Tracing of COVID-19 Over the Early Pandemic: Comprehensive Geospatial and Symptomatic Analysis in Lebanon.

BACKGROUND: In response to the early spread of COVID-19 in Lebanon, the University of Balamand developed the HAYATI app, a community-focused, geographic information system (GIS)-based digital health platform aimed at enhancing public health surveillance. At the time, while the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health utilized centralized dashboards to report confirmed cases and monitor national trends, no interactive tool existed to engage the public directly in real-time risk assessment and surveillance, especially in underserved regions. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to design, implement,

Modelling the distribution in Hawaii of Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) in its gastropod hosts.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm), a parasitic nematode, is expanding its distribution. Human infection, known as angiostrongyliasis, may manifest as eosinophilic meningitis, an emerging infectious disease. The range and incidence of this disease are expanding throughout the tropics and subtropics. Recently, the Hawaiian Islands have experienced an increase in reported cases. This study addresses factors affecting the parasite's distribution and projects its potential future distribution, using Hawaii as a model for its global expansion. Specimens of 37 snail species from the Hawaiian

Concordance between GPS-based smartphone app for continuous location tracking and mother's recall of care-seeking for child illness in India.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally, health care-seeking behaviour for child illness is assessed through population-based national demographic and health surveys. GPS-based technologies are increasingly used in human behavioural research including tracking human mobility and spatial behaviour. This paper assesses how well a care-seeking event to a health care facility for child illness, as recalled by the mother in a survey setting using questions sourced from Demographic and Health Surveys, concurs with one that is identified by TrackCare, a GPS-based location-aware smartphone application. Multi-modal assessment of on-road demand of voice and manual phone calling and voice navigation entry across two embedded vehicle systems.

One purpose of integrating voice interfaces into embedded vehicle systems is to reduce drivers' visual and manual distractions with 'infotainment' technologies. However, there is scant research on actual benefits in production vehicles or how different interface designs affect attentional demands. Driving performance, visual engagement, and indices of workload (heart rate, skin conductance, subjective ratings) were assessed in 80 drivers randomly assigned to drive a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox or Volvo XC60. The Chevrolet MyLink system allowed completing tasks with one voice command, while the Volv

Spatial distribution of soil-transmitted helminths, including Strongyloides stercoralis, among children in Zanzibar.

A programme periodically distributing anthelminthic drugs to school-aged children for the control of soiltransmitted helminthiasis was launched in Zanzibar in the early 1990s. We investigated the spatial distribution of soiltransmitted helminth infections, including Strongyloides stercoralis, in 336 children from six districts in Unguja, Zanzibar, in 2007. One stool sample per child was examined with the Kato-Katz, Koga agar plate and Baermann methods. The point prevalence of the different helminth infections was compared to the geological characteristics of the study sites. The observed preva

From Snow's map of cholera transmission to dynamic catchment boundary delineation: current front lines in spatial analysis.

The history of mapping infectious diseases dates back to the 19th century when Dr John Snow utilised spatial analysis to pinpoint the source of the 1854 cholera outbreak in London, a ground-breaking work that laid the foundation for modern epidemiology and disease mapping (Newsom, 2006). As technology advanced, so did mapping techniques. In the late 20th century, geographic information systems (GIS) revolutionized disease mapping by enabling researchers to overlay diverse datasets to visualise and analyse complex spatial patterns (Bergquist & Manda 2019; Hashtarkhani et al., 2021). The COVID-1…

Landscape ecology and epidemiology of vector-borne diseases: tools for spatial analysis.

Geographic information systems (GIS), global positioning systems (GPS), remote sensing, and spatial statistics are tools to analyze and integrate the spatial component in epidemiology of vector-borne disease into research, surveillance, and control programs based on a landscape ecology approach. Landscape ecology, which deals with the mosaic structure of landscapes and ecosystems, considers the spatial heterogeneity of biotic and abiotic components as the underlying mechanism which determines the structure of ecosystems. The methodologies of GIS, GPS, satellite imagery, and spatial statistics,…

Dos and don'ts of spatially explicit ecological risk assessments.

Location affects exposure and response to stressors at scales ranging from small sites to large regions. Tools such as geographic information systems (GIS) make it feasible to conduct spatially explicit ecological risk assessments (ERAs). However, no tools provide a panacea, and complex models based on sparse data can be inappropriate and misleading. Operations such as an interpolation within a GIS are models, and so they contain assumptions and uncertainties. Errors can propagate easily as numerous operations are performed, and the resulting uncertainties should be made explicit. Analysts sho…

Pulmonary vascular disease in Africa: Lessons from registries.

The epidemiology of pulmonary vascular disease (PVD) remains unclear in Africa, where health systems do not reach the majority of the population and heath information systems are poorly developed. In this context, registries are particularly important in gathering crucial information on PVD, aiming at improving knowledge of the epidemiology and/or quality of care. While population-based registries are the main tool to identify incident cases, and be a better indicator of pulmonary vascular disease burden, hospital-based registries can give an indication of the demand for specific care services

Dataset on the concentrations of anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors from the Canary Islands with geographic information.

The dataset presented in this article supports "Intensive livestock farming as a major determinant of the exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors of the Canary Islands (Spain)" (Rial-Berriel et al., 2020). A Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis on the influence of the influence of livestock activity on exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors in the Canary Islands was performed. This dataset provides geographic information on the localization of each raptor (either positive or negative for anticoagulant rodenticides, n = 308), as well as the concentrations of each co
