Assessment of hand after brain damage with the aim of functional surgery.

The semiology of the hand after brain damage is really rich. Its clinical evaluation remains quite difficult and must be integrated in the neuro-orthopedic and cognitive context. Deficiency, neuropsychological, analytic and functional status, must be assessed before any surgical decision aiming the improvement of prehension. Neuropsychological evaluation precise the hemispheric specialization: right hemisphere lesions conduct to unilateral spatial neglect while left hemispherical lesions determine language troubles and gesture impairment (apraxia). The analytical evaluation describes motor and

The question of the relationship between motor behaviour and psychopathology has been of concern to clinicians for many years. This question … is symptomatology implies an interpersonal dimension, which translates itself into bodily postures, gestures, changes of position, movements from one place to another and the manner in which the patient accomplishes actions. An analysis of their organization and their diachronic unfolding enables one to grasp and understand more effectively certain psychic …

Impact of Family-Based Care on the Outcome of Brain Death and Humanization in the Process of Multiple Organ Donation: Case Report.

In the care of this 29-year-old male patient, a victim of traumatic brain injury with brain death outcome, the multidisciplinary team played a fundamental role in an integrated, ethical, transparent and humanized way. Particularly important was the work of the nursing team, which provided humane and empathetic care and established a bond of trust with family members; the medical team, which managed the case with respect and clarity, guaranteeing the family's right to witness the diagnostic process and understand it at all stages; and psychology, which provided shelter and support for grieving.

Advanced biomimetic robotic hand with EMG lifelong learning and recognition.

The design and implementation of a suitable robotic hand for a toddler-sized humanoid robot is a challenging task. The main purpose of this work is to optimize the design of an anthropomorphic robotic hand and control it by using surface electromyographic (sEMG) signals. Isolation forest backward particle swarm optimization is used to optimize the robotic hand. The fitness function is defined by thumb opposability and the ability to grasp objects based on grasp taxonomy. Learning without forgetting (LWF) is adopted to train sEMG signal data sequentially, and the consequently learned model is u

Flexible and Stable GaN Piezoelectric Sensor for Motion Monitoring and Fall Warning.

Wearable devices have potential applications in health monitoring and personalized healthcare due to their portability, conformability, and excellent mechanical flexibility. However, their performance is often limited by instability in acidic or basic environments. In this study, a flexible sensor with excellent stability based on a GaN nanoplate was developed through a simple and controllable fabrication process, where the linearity and stability remained at almost 99% of the original performance for 40 days in an air atmosphere. Moreover, perfect stability was also demonstrated in acid-base

On the two rhotic schwas in Southwestern Mandarin: when homophony meets morphology in articulation.

This is an acoustic and articulatory study of the two rhotic schwas in Southwestern Mandarin (SWM), i.e., the er-suffix (a functional morpheme) and the rhotic schwa phoneme. Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) and ultrasound results from 10 speakers show that the two rhotic schwas were both produced exclusively with the bunching of the tongue body. No retroflex versions of the two rhotic schwas were found, nor was retraction of the tongue root into the pharynx observed. On the other hand, the er-suffix and the rhotic schwa, though homophonous, significantly differ in certain types of acoustic

Efficient Multiaxial Shoulder-Motion Tracking Based on Flexible Resistive Sensors Applied to Exosuits.

This article describes the performance of a flexible resistive sensor network to track shoulder motion. This system monitors every gesture of the human shoulder in its range of motion except rotations around the longitudinal axis of the arm. In this regard, the design considers the movement of the glenohumeral, acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular, and scapulothoracic joints. The solution presented in this work considers several sensor configurations and compares its performance with a set of inertial measurement units (IMUs). These devices have been put together in a shoulder suit with Optitra

Synthesis of asymmetric movement trajectories in timed rhythmic behaviour by means of frequency modulation.

Results from different empirical investigations on gestural aspects of timed rhythmic movements indicate that the production of asymmetric movement trajectories is a feature that seems to be a common characteristic of various performances of repetitive rhythmic patterns. The behavioural or neural origin of these asymmetrical trajectories is, however, not identified. In the present study we outline a theoretical model that is capable of producing syntheses of asymmetric movement trajectories documented in empirical investigations by Balasubramaniam et al. (2004). Characteristic qualities of the

Improved function after combined physical and mental practice after stroke: a case of hemiparesis and apraxia.

This study describes change in functional performance and self-perception after participation in combined training with physical practice followed by mental practice. The patient was a 44-yr-old white man who experienced a single left ischemic stroke 7 mo before enrollment in the study. He engaged in physical and mental practice of two functional tasks: (1) reaching for and grasping a cup and (2) turning pages in a book with the more-affected arm. Practice took place 3 times per week during 60-min sessions for 6 consecutive wk. Primary outcome measures were the Arm Motor Ability Test (AMAT) an

Thirty years of research on developmental neurolinguistics.

A body of medically important work has accumulated in the field of developmental neurolinguistics in the 30 years since Lenneberg set forth a research agenda for that field, consisting of the following: (1) the physiologic specialization or endowment for speech; (2) the genetic origin or natural history of vocalization and speech; (3) the nature of prelinguistic behavior, making possible the detection of any environmental (social) influences; (4) the development of motor-speech organization from birth; and (5) the limiting effects of deficient intelligence, hearing, and environmental stimulati

Speech acts and the pragmatic deficits of autism.

In a videotaped free-play session with a parent, autistic children were compared with mental-age matched Developmental Language Delay (DLD) children and with normally developing (ND) 2-year-olds in the use of communicative acts by parent and child. Groups were matched for language level. Autistic children had more incidents of no responses, produced less affirming, turn-taking vocalization, and gesture, and were less likely to initiate communication than other children. Parent groups differed only in a greater amount of initiating and use of imperatives by parents of autistic children. Few rel

Dynamic facial movements shape how confident speakers appear.

Human communication is inherently multimodal, relying on signals conveyed through speech, vocal tone and facial movements. While gestures and vocal cues are known to influence how speech is understood, the role of facial movements remains poorly specified. Here, we test whether dynamic facial movements shape how spoken responses are interpreted by systematically modulating listener inferences of speaker confidence and doubt. Using a data-driven reverse-correlation approach and a generative model of facial behaviour, we manipulated speakers' upper-face movements while holding verbal content con…

Interpersonal Synchronization of Autonomic Physiology via Mere Visual Contact.

Interpersonal physiological synchrony (IPS)-the temporal alignment of autonomic physiological signals-is emerging as a prominent feature of social interaction. IPS can predict complex social phenomena such as relationship quality or social bonding. Yet, the origins of IPS remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether and how IPS can emerge spontaneously through mere visual contact. Thirty-eight dyads of familiar participants were asked to face each other without speaking or making coverbal gestures. IPS was measured using four autonomic signals-heart rate, skin conductance, respirati…
