The prevalence of antibodies to CMV, Mumps and Coxsackie virus strains 1, 3 and 4 was studied in 39 samples of gingival crevicular fluids (GCF) obtained from clinical healthy patients and compared to the corresponding antibodies present in the serum of each individual. Ameloblastomas are common in Niger. Their main risk is recurrence, which nearly always follows inadequate surgery: these tumors require radical excision followed with mandibular graft. A preoperative diagnosis is therefore indispensable. X-ras are non-specific. In Niger, the danger of osteomyelitis makes surgical biopsies dangerous. The attention is brought to the existence of gum lesions in 8 cases of ameloblastoma in Nigerian patients. Their biopsy may provide the diagnosis in quick and safe conditions.

The present work collected data on the ultrastructural features of the attached gingiva in kidney transplant patients who showed gingival hyperplasia following cyclosporin A (Cy A) treatment. Ultrastructural examination was carried out on biopsies of attached gingiva obtained from 8 male patients (30 to 60 years old) undergoing treatment at the Dental Clinic of the University of Ferrara. The data showed that, although many fibroblasts are present in Cy A-induced hyperplasia, there is a particular abundance of amorphous substance compared to fibrous, as well as marked plasma cell infiltration.

A case is reported in which a 52-year-old male patient presented to his dental practitioner with several unusual, purple coloured gingival swellings, the largest of which was about 1 cm in diameter. A careful medical history revealed that the patient had 2 years previously been diagnosed as having low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Prompt referral led to confirmation of the provisional diagnosis of gingival manifestation of NHL and early institution of appropriate treatment.

The ability of human gingival fibroblasts to synthesize interleukin-6 (IL-6) was studied using in vitro and immunohistochemical techniques. Culture supernatants of human gingival fibroblasts contained significant quantities of IL-6 activity which could be stimulated by fetal calf serum, recombinant interleukin-1 beta and lipopolysaccharide. The purpose of this investigation is to compare the fibrinolytic activity in the gingival fluid, of 32 hemophilic patients with 36 normal subjects. Oral examination was carried out in both groups in order to determine the extent of periodontal disease, using the Ramfjord Periodontal Index. The disease was classified in three grades according to the depth of the gingival crevices: grade I: 0 to 3 mm (Normal Deepness); grade II: from 3 to 6 mm; grade III higher than 6 mm. The fibrinolytic activity was measured in fibrin plates, prepared with thrombin and fibrinogen with and without plasminogen.

Gingival thickness is a clinical characteristic which should be given more consideration in evaluating muco-gingival problems. It is proposed that thick gingiva prevents gingival recession and is of particular significance when fixed prosthesis is being employed. The technique outlined includes a connective graft from the lamina propria of the palatal mucosa into the gingival connective tissue. A case report documents the technique.

In our study 150 referred patients were assessed for the presence of gingival recession and root caries. The mean age of the patients was 40 +/- 9 years. On average they failed 6.8 teeth. Gingival recession was present in all patients, with mean value of 55.5% denuded dental root surfaces, the most frequently expressed on buccal root surfaces. High endothelial venules (HEV) are specialized postcapillary venules that play a central role in lymphocyte migration and recirculation. This study examined the occurrence and morphology of HEV-like vessels in healthy gingiva and in lesions of chronic gingivitis in children, experimental gingivitis in adults, adult periodontitis, and in periapical granulomas.
