BACKGROUND: Overproduction of IL-8 in the retina and optic nerve may affect the survival of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and contribute to axonal damage in glaucoma. The -251T > A functional variant in the promoter region of the IL8 gene is known to affect its transcriptional activity, as demonstrated in in vitro assays.
METHODS: The present study investigates the genetic association of this polymorphism with primary glaucoma in a North Indian Punjabi cohort. A total of 226 primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), 132 primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) patients and 424 matched controls were re

A multitude of pharmacological compounds have been shown to lower and control intraocular pressure (IOP) in numerous species of animals and human subjects after topical ocular dosing or via other routes of administration. Most researchers have been interested in finding drug candidates that exhibit a relatively long duration of action from a chronic therapeutic use perspective, for example to treat ocular hypertension (OHT), primary open-angle glaucoma and even normotensive glaucoma. However, it is equally important to seek and characterize treatment modalities which offer a rapid onset of act

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness. Although primary open-angle glaucoma is more common, primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) is more likely to result in irreversible blindness. By 2020, 5·3 million people worldwide will be blind because of PACG. The current standard care for PACG is a stepped approach of a combination of laser iridotomy surgery (to open the drainage angle) and medical treatment (to reduce intraocular pressure). If these treatments fail, glaucoma surgery (eg, trabeculectomy) is indicated. It has been proposed that, because the lens of the eye

INTRODUCTION: Primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) has a high prevalence and blinding rate across Asia. The first-line treatment of PACG is surgery, and phacotrabeculectomy remains the mainstream surgery for advanced PACG. However, it may cause vision-threatening complications with long learning curve. Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery has been gradually used in PACG combined with cataract surgery and achieved efficacy without excessive injury, of which goniotomy is the most commonly performed. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a multicentre, non-inferiority randomised controlled clini

The Asia-Pacific Glaucoma Society (APGS), in collaboration with the Academy of Asia-Pacific Professors of Ophthalmology (AAPPO), convened a panel of 18 international experts from 10 countries/territories to identify areas of controversy and establish consensus on diagnosing and managing Acute Primary Angle Closure Attack (APACA). APACA is a relatively common and potentially vision-threatening ocular emergency, particularly in Chinese and Asian populations. With timely and appropriate intervention, favorable outcomes could be achieved. However, with the current treatment protocol, two areas nee

BACKGROUND: Bilateral sequential cataract surgery within a short period is becoming more prevalent because of the efficiency and safety of modern cataract surgery. It has been reported that the first surgical eye might affect the contralateral eye. This study investigated the cytokines involved in the immunopathogenesis of pre-existing ocular or systemic conditions, as well as the inflammatory biomarkers in response to topical stimuli, by analyzing the cytokine profile of aqueous humor (AH) from cataract patients without these morbidities as control and with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), prim

A population of 539 persons was examined in 1979, using LCD and ACD estimations acc. to van Herick et al. and by Haag Streit pachymetry, respectively. ACD had been measured already in 1969, due to a remarkable occurrence of primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) in the survey population of Greenland Eskimos (District of Uummannaq). The present follow up study in 1989 aimed at persons presently above age 40, who had shown either an LCD value graded as 0 (contact) or 1 (< 0.25 of corneal thickness = CT), or a value of 2 (= 0.25 CT) if an ACD value of < = 2.70 mm (CT included) had also been found.
