A total of 1727 blood samples were cultured aerobically over a one year period, of which 201(11.8%) were positive. The ratio of Gram positive to Gram negative bacteraemia was 1:1. The three antimicrobials having the highest activities against the Gram positive isolates were amikacin, cefotaxime, and ciprofloxacin to which 88.5, 81.7 and 80.7 percent of the strains were susceptible: and the same agents were equally effective against Gram negative organisms with 84.5, 75.3 and 70.1 percent efficacy respectively. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus spp. was the most frequent organism isolated(60; 2

Extremophilic actinomycetes strains can survive extreme saline and alkaline environments and produce antimicrobial agents. In this chapter, we discuss laboratory methods that can be used to isolate and characterize actinomycetes strains capable of potentially producing novel antimicrobial agent(s) when cultured in conditions that mimic the environments from which they were isolated. Methods used to screen for antibacterial and antiviral activities from these producer strains, and microbiological and molecular approaches used to identify these strains are described. Here we describe three metho

OBJECTIVE: Antibiotics change the composition of the intestinal microbiota. The magnitude of the effect of antibiotics on the microbiota and whether the effects are short-term or persist long-term remain uncertain. In this review, we summarise studies that have investigated the effect of antibiotics on the composition of the human intestinal microbiota.
METHODS: A systematic search was done to identify original studies that have investigated the effect of systemic antibiotics on the intestinal microbiota in humans.
RESULTS: We identified 129 studies investigating 2076 participants and 301 co

Interaction of bacteria with lectin using anti-lectin antibody by ELISA is an established method. In the present study, we have devised a simple ELISA using a biotinylated lectin and antibiotin-HRP. Ficus cunia agglutinin (FCA), which has shown the specificity towards alpha/beta anomers of GlcNAc and other-NAc containing sugars like LacNAc and GlcNAcbeta(1-4/6)GlcNAc, was used as a model lectin for the study of interaction with immobilized microorganisms on ELISA plate. The bacterial strains isolated from 565 patients diagnosed as having urinary tract infections (UTIs) in 14 institutions in Japan were collected between August 2003 and July 2004. The susceptibilities of them to many kinds of antimicrobial agents were investigated. Of them, 701 strains were estimated as prophlogistic bacteria and used for the investigation. The strains consisted of 258 Gram-positive bacterial strains (36.8%) and 443 Gram-negative bacterial strains (63.2%). Against Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin (VCM) showed the strongest activity and prevented the growth of all strains with …

Isepamicin (formerly SCH 21420 or 1-N-HAPA-gentamicin B) is a novel broad-spectrum aminoglycoside which possesses a high level of stability to aminoglycoside inactivating enzymes and low levels of toxicity to the kidney and inner ear. The only modifying enzymes capable of inactivating isepamicin are ANT(4')-I (staphylococci), ANT(4')-II and APH(3')-VI, in addition to resistance mediated by permeability mutations. The spectrum of isepamicin is most similar to that of amikacin, another aminoglycoside with high enzyme stability. Reviews of isepamicin activity demonstrate MIC90s ranging from 1.1 t

Amoebocyte lysate from the horseshoe crabs (Tachypleus gigas) which abounds in the Gulf of Thailand was used to detect endotoxin in patients with Gram-negative bacteremia, in patients with Gram-positive bacterial infections as well as in the control. The Tachypleus lysate test (TLT) was positive in 94.4% of 36 patients with Gram-negative bacteremia before initiation of antibiotic therapy. Only 4% of 50 healthy individuals were positive and all 7 patients with Gram-positive bacterial infections were negative. The threshold sensitivity of TLT was 0.625 micrograms endotoxin per ml of the plasma.

Gram-negative bacterial sepsis remains a major global health threat, exacerbated by rising antimicrobial resistance and limited efficacy of current therapies. Central to its pathogenesis is lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a potent endotoxin that triggers overwhelming inflammation and organ dysfunction. This review critically evaluates emerging therapies targeting LPS in sepsis. Key strategies include antibiotics disrupting LPS biosynthesis and transport (e.g. zosurabalpin, darobactin), monoclonal and bispecific antibodies, extracorporeal endotoxin removal devices, and novel agents like LpxC inhibito…

There are multiple vector-borne diseases in cats, the most prominent being those transmitted by mosquitos, sand flies, fleas, and ticks. Many of the agents vectored by fleas or ticks have been grown or amplified from blood or have induced antibodies in the serum of normal cats or those with clinical signs like fever and will be the focus of this manuscript. As high as 80% of fleas collected from cats contain at least one organism that could induce illness in cats or people. Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella spp., Borrelia spp., Ehrlichia spp., hemoplasmas, and Rickettsia spp. infect cats a

Multiple pathogenic Gram-negative bacteria produce cytolethal-distending toxins (CDTs). CDT is typically composed of three subunits: the catalytic subunit CdtB has DNase I-like activity, whereas CdtA and CdtC are binding proteins for delivering CdtB into target cells. Translocation of CdtB to the nucleus induces genotoxic effects on host DNA, triggering DNA repair cascades that lead to cell cycle arrest and eventual cell death. Several lines of evidence indicate that this toxin contributes to the pathogenicity of CDT-producing bacteria in vivo. Helicobacter hepaticus and Campylobacter jejuni C…

This report describes the isolation of Moellerella wisconsensis from the oral secretions of a wild raccoon in Northern California. Human enteric disease has previously been associated with this organism. This represents the first isolation of this rare enterobacterial species from a non-captive animal and only the third from a non-human source.

Between 3-12 weeks after the beginning of supragingival plaque formation, a distinctive subgingival microflora predominantly made up of gram-negative, anaerobic bacteria and including some motile species, becomes established. In order to establish in a periodontal site, a species must be able to attach to one of several surfaces including the tooth (or host derived substances adhering to the tooth), the sulcular or pocket epithelium, or other bacterial species that are attached to these surfaces (Socransky and Haffajee 1991). Bacterial adhesion has demonstrated specificity in the mechanisms in
